Carrots let you see in the dark, goldfish have a three second memory and the only man-made object visible from space is the Great Wall of China - all great trivia facts that everyone knows, right? Wrong! In fact none of these are true at all! They are what are known as urban legends, and are just a few examples of a long list of strange and quirky myths that we all accept as known truths.

In actual fact, the myth about carrots

was started by the RAF during World War

II to hide the fact that the British had started to use radar,

thus enabling them to effectively see in the dark! A fake story was printed in the newspapers owing their new found effectiveness at night flying to the consumption of carrots – deliberately misinforming the public and in turn the enemy!

Goldfish have perfectly normal memories, and scientists have proven that they remember things for up to six months.

As for the Great Wall of China, you would

actually need eyesight 17,000 times better than normal 20/20

vision to see it from the moon! And

despite this myth being debunked many years ago, it is

still repeated as fact by nearly everyone.

By definition an urban legend is a second hand story that is just plausible enough to be believable, but presented as truth. It is usually based on a statistic or ironic story that is so compelling you can’t help but memorise it and repeat it to your friends, and before too long they become viral.

The internet has certainly made it much easier to spread these fascinating untruths, and perhaps the best example of this is the fact that you accidentally swallow about eight spiders a year in your sleep. Is this true? Absolutely not! Spiders have a natural instinct to stay alive and crawling into a snoring mouth would be extremely unlikely. In fact, this non-fact was deliberately created by a journalist in 1993 to prove that you could make up anything on the internet and people would believe it – how right she was!

Finally here are few more popular urban legends that we can put to bed - sugar does not cause hyperactivity in children; shaving doesn’t make your hair grow back thicker; going out with wet hair doesn’t mean you will catch a cold; elephants are not the only mammal unable to jump, and, believe it or not, there is absolutely no truth whatsoever in the myth that lemmings voluntarily leap to their deaths from cliff tops. This particular one was actually created by Disney!

These urban myths are certainly unusual, funny and sometimes shocking. But what is amazing is that so many people believe them and pass them on. Perhaps the strangest thing is that I still want to believe them all!

Forthcoming shows at Romsey’s Plaza Theatre include the Footlights Youth Theatre’s presentation of Sweet Charity and a presentation of of Alan Bennett’s Habeas Corpus by The Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS).

Sweet Charity, which will be presented from July 10th to 14th at 7.30pm each day, with a additional show at 2.30pm on July 14th, will give the audience the chance to discover the romantic misadventures of Charity Hope Valentine, the gregarious, gullible and guileless girl who repeatedly gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong men.

Accompanied by a host of outrageously colourful characters

and a show-stopping score featuring The Rhythm of Life, Dream Your Dream and Big Spender, this musical promises to be an evening to remember for all the family.

Twenty two years after RAODS first performed it, from July 17th to 21st they will be returning to Habeas Corpus, the hilariously entertaining, bawdy picture postcard comedy that combines the fast-paced fun of a classic farce with Bennett’s unmistakably dry Northern wit.

It’s a balmy summer afternoon, and a variety of upper middle class residents are certainly feeling the heat. The sex-mad Dr Arthur Wicksteed is caught in a compromising position with a gorgeous young patient. His wife, Muriel craves the reawakening of her passion – with anyone from a travelling salesman to her husband’s bitter rival. While Arthur’s

sister, Connie is obsessed with developing her flat chest and makes a plan to help nature along - and there are plenty of offers to give her a helping hand!

Will the doctor get away with his clumsy attempts at seduction? Will Canon Throbbing, the randy local vicar, still be left unsatisfied? Will Connie’s new extensive bust land her the man of her dreams? Will the despairing Mr Purdue finally pop his cork? There’s only one way to find out!

Further details of these two and other shows due to take place at The Plaza can be seen at www.plazatheatre.com and on-line ticket booking can be carried out at www.ticketsource.co.uk/plazatheatre.

Surinder Bellamy tells how toLOSE WEIGHT IN TIME FOR SUMMER!

If you’ve got your summer holiday booked or are planning to have a week or two in the sun, then there’s still some time to make some changes to diet and exercise if you want to lose a few pounds and shape up before getting into those summer clothes.

Toning up the muscles to have a firmer body and burning off as much excess fat as possible are what’s needed. However, most people confuse weight-loss on the scales with actual fat-loss, but this often isn’t the case. When you weigh yourself, you are weighing your total body weight, which includes all of you – your bones, your muscle tendons and ligaments, your fat and your water content and everything that’s contained inside your skin. Trying to lose ‘weight’ is really about reducing body fat, whilst preserving muscle mass. Often weight-loss achieved through dieting is a result of fluid and muscle loss, as well as fat. It is important when on a weight-reducing programme to make sure that you are only losing fat and not water and muscle.

There are three main elements of a good weight-loss programme that will help you build muscle, burn calories and stay healthy. These are cardiovascular exercise, strength training and a healthy eating plan that you can follow. Stretching would be incorporated into your cardio and strength work. Warming up and stretching before and especially after a work out is

important because, as it helps prevent injury and because muscles contract during exercise and

stretching afterwards lengthens them back out again and prevents tight muscles and future problems.

Before you start it’s also a good idea to check with your doctor and get the all clear, especially for cardiovascular work, which takes your heart rate up and can impact on

the joints.

Once you’ve done that, then all that you need to get started

is to set aside 30-60 minutes, 4-6 times a week. Put it into your diary or on your calendar and stick to it.

Decide whether you’re going to

do this first thing in the morning, in your

lunch hour or in the evening - then do it.

Once you’ve decided when to exercise, make sure you have a good pair of trainers, a sports bra (for the ladies) and loose, comfortable clothing.

To burn calories, you’ll need to do cardio for at least 30 minutes, 4-6 days each week. Choosing something you enjoy (or at least don’t mind) is more important than trying to make yourself do something you dislike. Intensity, duration and the type of activity is also something to keep in mind. Power-walking, jogging, and running are the same type of activity but the intensity varies greatly. Bear in mind also whether you can support your bodyweight for the required length of time, in which case consider swimming or cycling. There are so many activities to do – dancing, tennis, golf, and many other sports that include a social element or interaction with another person.

As well as doing cardio, strength training is an essential part of weight-loss to build lean muscle and raise your metabolism. Many people overlook the importance of strength (weight) training in a weight-loss programme and some women still believe that it will give them big muscles or that it is only for men. However the after-effects of strength-training in burning calories last much longer than after doing cardio. This is because the body has to burn calories in repairing muscles.

You will adapt to your exercise as your fitness improves, so it’s important to have the right eating plan. You must constantly aim to burn more calories than you eat so be prepared to make changes to your diet. Try to think in terms of health and nutrition and aim to eat from all of the food groups each day. These are complex carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables, fruits and dairy. It will help to remember the following –

Don’t skip meals and never skip breakfast! This • actually slows down your metabolism, which means your body is burning fewer calories.

Drink more water. Staying hydrated stops you • feeling hungry and is important during and after exercise to replace lost fluid.

Watch your portion sizes. Many people eat quite • well, but they simply eat more than their bodies require. You can continue to eat the foods you like - just in smaller amounts.

Watch out for low-fat or light products in the • supermarkets as these can often be high in sugar.

Eat high fibre, low calories foods that can add • bulk to your diet and fill your plate like vegetables and most fruits.

With exercise and healthy activity every little bit helps and doing something is always better than doing nothing, so get those trainers on and enjoy a fit and healthy summer!

HOLIDAY INN

Think Safety, Think StairliftEvery year in the UK over 1000 people die and over 100,000 people are injured when climbing stairs. The statistics speak for themselves.

Do you really need to move to a ground floor flat or bungalow just because of illness or advancing age? Your home is probably one of your most precious possessions, full of pleasant memories, where you are surrounded by friends and neighbours, where you know where everything is and where you can keep your beloved pet. It is normally the centre of your family and social life.

With a stairlift you may not need to compromise your independence or struggle up the stairs in your cherished home. Specialist mobility and stairlift installers understand the problems that reduced mobility can bring. They also understand how important it is for people who wish to maintain their independence and individuality. Visit a dealer with a demonstration lift to assess the benefits and suitability.

Don’t use your energy climbing stairs when it could be used for enjoyment. As we get older with a limited amount of energy, it is better to concentrate our time and energy on more important things in life. Whether it is meeting friends or relations, watching TV, gardening or getting out and about, they are all better than struggling up a flight of stairs.

Don’t worry about powercuts. Most modern stairlift systems are powered by rechargeable batteries from a mains transformer. So you won’t be left stranded halfway or get a nasty shock.

Half Landings, Curves and Narrow Stairs. All good installers can accommodate most without too much problem.

Easy and Quick Installation. Modern stairlifts are normally attached to the existing stairs in less than half a day.

Guarantee. Modern stairlifts should be guaranteed for a minimum of 1 year, sometimes longer, offering the option to extend if required. Maintenance. Ensure you choose an installer possessing local maintenance technicians.

Price. A standard straight stairlift will cost a fraction of the amount to move and there should hot be any hidden extras such as electrics.

We are looking for a freelance sales person to sell advertising space in our series of magazines, to follow-up leads in some cases and to help with the development of the franchising side of the business.

With earnings on a commission basis and with the ability to be home-based, this position enables you to work as and when you can and as often as you want.

The Anorak Man talks aboutFIRST AID

It was a long time ago when I enrolled for my first

course in First Aid.

I was very nervous, especially as all the others seemed to be so good at it. My early attempts at mouth to mouth resuscitation were not good as I all I managed to do was produce strange noises when I tried to blow air into the dummy’s mouth. The instructor told me that I should be making the dummy’s chest rise and not be blowing raspberries. The dummy also made strange noises when I practiced my chest compressions and it made me laugh so much I couldn’t go on. I was later told that I put too much effort into my chest compressions and damaged something in the dummy’s interior! The instructor taught me to be more gentle with the poor dummy and I eventually got my certificate and the instructor got a new dummy.

My second course was the day after a long flight back from Australia and I was suffering from jet lag. A sleepy feeling came over me and I dozed off and knocked my desk over. Everyone turned round looking very startled at me thinking it was part of the course and I needed resuscitating!!!

It’s been over ten years since my last course and I thought it was time for me to have another go, as not only had I forgotten much of the basic training but I needed to find out all the latest changes in techniques;. it was beginning to worry me that if someone collapsed in front of me I wouldn’t know what to do.

No problem now though. After a days learning I soon picked up the latest first aid techniques and I am now confident that I will be able to handle an emergency situation. Oh, and the dummy survived my efforts at resuscitating it this time.

If you are worried that you won’t be able to cope in an emergency, why not enroll for a first aid course, you won’t regret it.

5 July 6 September 4 October 1 November 29 November

Summer at WimbledonIt’s Wimbledon again, I’m feeling anxious, very fraught,

The pressure’s on again, it always is, on Centre Court,

The linesman has a guide dog and the umpire’s ninety three,

My opponent’s using gamesmanship; it’s really bothering me,

He queries almost everything; we’re stuck again at deuce,

The umpire is agreeing! What’s all this? The man’s obtuse,

So many bad decisions, and so many dodgy calls,

If he carries on, it won’t be me who needs some brand new balls,

Now it’s getting cloudy, and of course, here comes the rain,

It seems that we’ll be heading to the changing rooms again,

I’m thinking things can’t get much worse, and then, to my chagrin,

As I scuttle off the court, I hear Cliff Richard start to sing…

Shopping List -

Cooking with IanIan Wooldridge, Head Chef,

at Kimbridge Farm, near Romsey

with your Seasonal Produce Recipe

Pan-Fried Cod with Broad Beans

and PancettaMake the most of broad beans during their short season with this quick,

but sophisticated fish dish. This recipe serves four.

400 grams of podded broad beans (weight with pods approx 1.6Kg)

A little salt125 grams of pancetta, cut into strips200 grams of crème fraicheHalf a 25 gram packet of fresh dillSalt & freshly milled black pepper

Olive oil

4 cod fillets, skin-on, 125 grams each

40 grams of salted butter

Large handful of parsley, finely chopped

Firstly, blanch the podded broad beans in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain and then plunge the beans into cold water. Larger or older (late season) broad beans will now need their membranes peeled off. Next, heat a frying pan and add the pancetta strips. There isn’t a need to add any additional fat or oil. Fry until the fat from the pancetta is rendered and it becomes crisp. Add the blanched broad beans to the pan, constantly stirring until tender. Now stir in the crème fraiche. Discard the thicker storks from the dill and chop the rest finely, then add to the pan. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. In a separate pan, heat a little olive oil. Season the cod fillets with salt and pepper and place skin-side down into the pan. Fry for approximately 3 minutes until the skin is crisp. Turn the fillets over and add the butter (10g each) and

cook for a further 2 to 3 minutes until they are cooked through, basting them with the butter as you go. The cod is cooked when it breaks easily with a fork. Depending on the size of the pan, you can do this one or more at a time. To serve, share the broad bean mixture between four plates and place the cod skin-side up on top. Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley. A bowl of buttered new potatoes or sauté potatoes would be a good accompaniment.

West End star and multi-platinum selling artist Marti Pellow joins the cast of Blood Brothers for two spectacular weeks only, when the show is presented at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre from September 10th to 22nd.

The Wet Wet Wet front-man and music legend will take on the role of narrator in this critically-acclaimed smash hit musical.

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet

again with fateful consequences.

The superb musical score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally-charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as this multi-award winning one, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its twenty-third phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance.

Ticket details and other information about the show can be obtained by telephoning The Mayflower Box Office on 023-8071-1811.
