Project Needs and Goals
• Maintain/provide a safe crossing of PocotopaugCreek for vehicles traveling on CT Route 66
• Remove deteriorated elements from service byrepair or replacement
• Minimize disturbance for the traveling public
during construction
• Improve roadway ride-ability for traveling public

Project Overview
• Project is in preliminary design stage
– We are looking for your input
• Full replacement of bridge to remove deterioratedelements from service
• Widening of the bridge to the north by 5.5’ to
maintain two lanes of traffic across the bridge forthe majority of construction and always at leastone lane. The existing width of lanes and southsidewalk will remain unchanged, both shoulderswill be widened to 4’.

CT Route 66 Over Pocotopaug Creek
• Built in 1913 and widened in 1925• Original 1913 section consists of concrete slab with
embedded steel beams. Newer 1925 section is aconventional reinforced concrete slab.
• Substructure consists of stone masonry abutments behind
concrete scour walls flanked by concrete wingwalls

Existing Geometry
• Single span, total bridge length of 11’
• Bridge width = 33.7’ (curb-to-curb), 43.8’ (out-to-out)
• Carries a 16’ EB lane, 11’ WB lane, 3’ wide north shoulderand a 3’ wide south shoulder

• Deck: “5” Fair
• Superstructure: “5” Fair • Substructure: “4” Poor
• Deck Geometry: “4” Poor
• Structure Evaluation: “4” Poor
• Average Daily Traffic: 11,300 Vehicles

Proposed Replacement Measures:
• Full replacement using 11’ wide x 6’ high precast concrete boxculvert, with cast-in-place concrete wingwalls, cutoff walls, andreturn walls
• Curb-to-curb width of 40’ -6”, consisting of a 16’ -0” eastbound laneand an 11’ -0” westbound lane, with a 4’ -0” shoulder on the southside, and a 9’ -6” shoulder on the north side.
• Out-to-out width of 50’ -6”, with a 7’ -6” sidewalk and brick accentstrip on the south side. The proposed 9’ -6” shoulder on the northside is wide enough to accommodate a sidewalk in the future.

Traffic Impacts
• Traffic on Route 66 will be maintained at alltimes
• One-way alternating traffic pattern requiredfor 55 hour weekend period (Stage 3)
• Pedestrian movements allowed throughout allstages of construction
• Access to abutting driveways to be limited
• Eastern driveway (to Subway plaza) adjacent
to bridge, to be closed for majority ofconstruction
