Instructional Objectives Students will have a better understanding of environmental activism, grassroots organizations and the politics behind earth day. Students will review the 3R model: Reduce, reuse, and recycle and have a better understanding of how to apply the 3R model. Students will apply the model in class in a creative way to make art. Students will use problem solving skills to look for problems and solutions and use digital documentation.

Assessment Discussion and applied use with 3R model.

Digital documentation of scavenger hunt and notes taken.

Materials Computer- PowerPoint YouTube Earth Day rap video. Pre-cut cardboard for journal making. Magazines, newspapers, fabric, buttons, ribbon, soda tabs, paper, beads. Many items that will be reused in decorating our journals. Digital Cameras.

Time (Total and Specific) Introduction: 5 minutes Lesson: 20 minutes Journal Project: 20 minutes Scavenger Hunt: 20 minutes Assessment: 10 minutes Total: 1 hour 15 minutes

Introduce Earth Day and why we need to learn about taking care of our planet. Explain that Earth Day is celebrated world-wide and should be a concern to everyone who lives here.  Introduce Gaylord Nelson, environmental activist and creator of Earth Day, and why he felt the need to take action for our environment. We will discuss what an environmental activist is and how we can all be one. What is a grassroots organization? The students will learn about the different acts Nelson created when he was in office and why we now have the Environmental Protection Agency. Students will reuse cardboard and other materials to make journals . Students will use a digital camera and go on a scavenger hunt. Objective is to take pictures of things that we can help reduce, reuse or recycle. Students will take notes on how they could do this will each objects. Students will then paste their pictures in the journal and write how they will use the objects differently.
