Pause and think about early literacy outcome indicators before you proceed!

• What is an early literacy outcome indicator?

• How might you know a child has achieved an early literacy outcome?

• Click here to read or listen to CELL’s responses to these questions.

• Proceed through the distance learning event with these responses in mind.

Introduce: What are early literacy outcome indicators?

• Markers we can observe to see if children are gaining competence and approaching mastery

• Along the way to mastery we can see– Interest in the early literacy activity– Engagement in the early literacy activity– Competence in the literacy behaviors involved in the

literacy activity

Illustrate: Identifying Early Literacy Outcome Indicators

• Interests– Does the child appear to enjoy the literacy activity?– Does the child request the literacy activity at other

times?• Engagement

– Is the child actively participating in the literacy activity?– Is the child “working hard” at trying to do the literacy

activity?• Competence

– Is the child able to do the literacy activity with minimal support?

• Mastery– Does the child try to do something new as part of the

literacy activity?

Answering the following questions will help you know where a child is in the Cycle of Mastery:

Practice: Recognize Early Literacy Outcome Indicators

• Watch the Ready, Set, Read video by clicking here

• Identify and write down one example (if you see it) of each of the following: – The child is actively participating in the literacy activity– The child requests the literacy activity at other times– The child appears to enjoy the literacy activity– The child is “working hard” at trying to do the literacy

activity– The child is able to do the literacy activity with minimal

support– The child does something new as part of the literacy

activity

Evaluate: Recognize Early Literacy Outcome Indicators

• Submit your examples to our discussion board by clicking here

• Think about these questions: (1) How did you know a child was “working hard” at trying to do an activity?; (2) What are some early literacy abilities that you saw where children were developing competence?

• Do you have any questions about the practice exercise? Please submit them to our discussion board by clicking here
