Commonwealth STEM Industry Summer Internship Program Sponsored by the Virginia Space Consortium in partnership with Virginia’s Regional Technology Councils and in collaboration with Virginia colleges. Accounting Internship with Augusta County Government: Spring 2013 County finance office at the Government Center in Verona, VA. For application instruction contact the Office of Career Services. Projects related to governmental accounting/finance include: 1. Set up Government Finance Officer’s Association (GFOA) budget certificate template; 2. Prepare explanatory documentation on each revenue of the government; 3. Assist with cash flow analysis for Capital Improvements Fund; and 4. Analyze funding formula(s) for regional agencies.
The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, is a paid 10-week summer internship program that provides opportunities to minority and female students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology (IT), engineering, or mathematics (STEM majors). Candidates who are selected will have the opportunity to work on focused research projects consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy. During the 10 weeks, students will work at one of several locations including national laboratories. At the conclusion of the internship, students will attend a “Technical Forum” where they will present their research project and tour technical sites located nearby. TESLA Summer Internship Program TESLA, Inc. specializes in building econometric forecasting models for electric and gas utilities worldwide. The paid summer internship program, geared towards economics and math students in their senior year, runs from May to August and is based in Richmond, Virginia. Put Some Pizzazz Into Your Job Interview

Chances are good that as a job hunter,
you have agonized over dealing with the
standard, hackneyed interview
questions: Tell me about yourself. What
are your biggest strengths and
weaknesses? What will you be doing in
five years from now? What are your
salary requirements? And so on.
As much as these questions might
cause angst for you, they likely create
boredom for the interviewer. They
read the same articles you do, they
interview many, many candidates, and
they can tell a canned answer a mile
away. If you treat the interview as
something like a test, with questions
asked, answered, and graded, it is
extremely difficult to break out from
the rest of the pack. However, if you
dispense with the question with just a
short sentence or two, and then re-
frame it you can bring some pizzazz to
the exchange and really differentiate
yourself from your competition.

If you will be in the market for a new job soon or are currently
unemployed, Holiday Party Season is your season. Networking
does not mean you become a walking/talking resume. Think of
networking as research. As said in previous Etiquette Tips, the
best way to start and continue a conversation is to ask questions:
What do you do for a living?
How long have you been with that company?
How did you first become interested in that company?
What do you like best about your company (or job)?
How did you get started in that field?
This is not just job research, it's company research, because you learn which company has happy and
satisfied employees and which ones don't. (One person badmouthing their company might just be a
malcontent. Three is a pattern.)
Here is the best part. When you ask questions of another person, you show you are taking interest in that
person and that makes people feel good about themselves. This is what etiquette is all about.
Some people who are out of work avoid holiday parties. Never fear to admit you are out of
work. Everyone has been there. Networking skills honed in holiday season are valuable assets when you
do find employment. Now get out there and party.
