[Excerpts from: Alaras, Consolacion R. 2006.

“Pamathalaan.” Ed. Priscelina Patajo-Legasto. Diliman

Review 53, 1-4:265-273.]

(Until the kaloob [gift of enlightenment} bestowed on the poor and oppressed is not

affirmed by patotoo [a pure and true proof of commitment], there will be

no fulfillment in this country).

This deep and haunting cry which is almost a lament

reverberates in the near and remote areas of the

Philippines where Katipunan descendants known

as Kapatiran or spiritual brotherhood gather together.

It is a cry I have pursued for many years within and outside the academe. […]

In the pioneering book Pasyon at Revolution by Reynaldo Clemena Ileto, […] is found the Katipunan vision of a governance based on the structure of a radiant loob, and not on deceptive rhetoric, which echoes the Kapatiran cry for a sacred unity of kaloob and patotoo.[…]

Without mentioning kaloob and patotoo, Ileto was able to discuss the essence of these twin Kapatiran concepts when he highlighted the significance given by Bonifacio to the Katipunan initiation rites which he insisted on at the risk of reducing recruitment figures. The goal of Bonifacio was to ensure that the Katipunan would be the movement to bring together worthy sons and daughters of the beloved Motherland. […]

Following the Katipunan model, the Kapatiran strives to practice a three-fold process of purification, enlightenment, and commitment […] that aims: 1. To recover the ancestral meanings and heroic values

associated with Spiritual Government or Govierno Espiritual, unfortunately tainted or darkened by modern education and greed;

2. To allow the Kapatiran’s ancestral meanings and heroic values to guide our country to the path of a model nation; and

3. The let this light (as a model nation) shine throughout the world. […]

Marius Diaz, a former SVD seminarian, sought to capture the Kapatiran’s ancestral and heroic heritage. PAMATHALAAN—the term that emerged, has proven to be an inspired one. […]

PAMATHALAAN

[T]he five units of meaning taken together … now means: a sacred model government based on ancestral or native moorings destined in our history. For the Kapatiran —Katipunan descendants — this destiny is clear: it is for the Philippines to become a light to the world when worthy sons and daughters recover the unity of the spiritual and material; a unity that manifests itself in the great belief that saints are heroes and heroes are saints and for that reason, love of God, love of country, love of fellow men, and love of nature are not hierarchical and disparate. […]

PAMATHALAAN/ PAMAMATHALA:

1. ..[affirms] that a community or constituency that strives to purify itself will be enlightened and committed, thus giving birth to an ideal leadership;

2. …enshrines the many poor and oppressed; the displaced and dispempowered. Hence to buy the votes of the poor or use force is to desecrate the very essence of PAMATHALAAN [ …]. Every time a leader is corrupt, that leader kills because he/she deprives his/her constituents of what is rightfully theirs.

3. …seeks to heal the wounds inflicted on the legacy of our ancestors and heroes.

4. …hopes to honor the scattered Katipunan descendants in every barangay, town, municipality, city, and province.

5. …prays for individual and collective courage so that people may be part of the prophetic process for our country to be the light of the world.

6. …works to stimulate artistic and consensual energies to create community symbols of DAMBANA NG BAYAN.

7. …fulfills the national Katipunan call for purification, enlightenment, and commitment through the created community symbols of DAMBANA NG BAYAN: PAMATHALAAN is to the DAMBANA NG BAYAN as kaloob is to patotoo.

Let this light as model nation light through the world!
