Convocation - 2013

e - lounge | an endeavour | 16

There is a good reason they call these ceremonies “commencement exercises.” Graduation/Convocation is not the end; it's the beginning…of a new life indeed. The Annual convocation held at PCTE Group of Institutes awarded about 500 degrees. Director General of PCTE Group of Institutes, Dr. KNS Kang gave the degrees to the students and Mr. V.K Goyal, CEO & ED, SEL Manufacturing who was the Chief guest at the event, gave away the college colours and prizes to the laudable students. The students, from various streams like PDGM, BBA, BCA, MBA, MBA -IB, MCA, MSc-IT, ATHM, B.Pharmacy, BHMCT, BSc who dedicated time and energy to studies, were awarded degrees. In other words, they reaped what they sowed. This kind of occasion is every student's dream to step up on stage and hold the degree in her/his hand knowing that one has finally done it. In addition to that it also gives pride to the parents that their child has come that far. Mr. Goyal, said, “There are opportunities available for students.

All they need is right attitude and direction”. He narrated an anecdote about Sir Edward Hillary, who along with Mr. Sherpa Tenzing was the first to scale Mt. Everest. Sir Hillary, who failed to scale the everest the first time was asked by his native country men in New Zealand to come and deliever a motivational speech. He reluctantly agreed, but requested for the picture of Mt. Everest to be displayed on the backdrop. When Sir Hillary reached the venue, he went near the picture and said, “Everest you are a mountain. You have grown as big as you could, but I am a human and I am growing all the time”The students were applauded and motivated by Mr. Goyal's motivating speech and left their alma matter in an endeavour to continuously grow.

2013 had just begun and I had ambitious resolutions for the year, including walk my dog every evening, and cross-train at work. But we all have 24 hours in a day, and there is only so much we get done by the end of each day. .. and it is already June. That's when our trainers got active to put us all in good shape and form. PCTE trainers, now a dozen of them actually did 55 training modules for Industry and other educational Institutions and several others for in campus for nerds like me. .. !!!

What do they train for? Literally everything you and I need. You name it. Attitude, Aptitude, Change Management , Conf l i c t management , Cr is is Management, Time Management, Leadership Skills, Managerial Effectiveness, Motivation, Team Building, Soft Skills, IT skills, dining etiquettes, High Impact Presentations, etc.

Who do they train? Well every big organization that falls in

the diameter of 100 kilometers either side of the city, and some small ones too. Vardhman, Trident, Eastman, Cremica, Beetel, IOL, OWM, Malwa, LMA, and various education Institutes.

It is total fun says Ms.Ashima Thapar, who has been on the Trainers Team for the last three years. She is basically a CA, and teaches financial subjects, so training allows her to step out the dry numbers and unleash her intuitive side. She says she grows each time she steps out to train.

Mr. Amitej Singh, also now an amateur into the field is an all rounder. He takes training sessions from something as challenging as conflict management and change management to something as mundane as team building. He says he never tires of it, and as much he enjoys talking to students on the campus, he equally enjoys talking to the executive fora in the Industry via the Training Panel.

Welcome Guests!!! And we have an unusually large number each year. 77 to be precise in the last semester! Why do we have so many Guests come to PCTE? Cause they bring in fresh information, new perspectives and a completely new outlook, which is adapted out of a shaping dynamic market, and most professors and students cannot be abreast to it, without the inputs from people who live through it every day. Also, because they add value to the class, students learning and in raising the bar totally. Who comes to talk at PCTE? Everyone from Ambassadors and Ministers of various countries to small start up entrepreneurs.

PCTE Faculty Lead Players in “Rishtey”

e - lounge | an endeavour | 19

The daughter (Sandhita) and her fiancé took the responsibility of making the parents realize their mistake and challenged the anomalies of society like the “dowry.”

If the young generation takes the initiative, problems can be eradicated. Hence, the daughter (Sandhita) realized the mistake and unites the parents. Sandhita thought that elders are not always right, young people are also able to solve social issues. Prof. Swapan also mentioned that nowadays there is a lot of mistrust in the families. Therefore, trust is a must in any relation.

This particular occasion was organized by Ludhiana Kala Manch which has actively organized and directed since 1976. The Director of this organization Dr. S.N. Sevak, who is 76 years old still, has the same passion for theater as he did during his youth. He also happens to be Prof. Swapan's mentor, who is the General Secretary of this organization (Ludhiana Kala Manch).

Unit Head, PCTE Institute of Management &Technology, Prof. Swapan Channa and Ms. Kawinder Kalsi Professor of French at PCTE Institute of Hotel Management featured in “Rishtey”, a remarkable theater play. Swapan explains that he had performed in the same play in 1992 and then revived it again this year on 27 April 2013, when it was staged at Punjabi Bhavan.

The name of the play “Rishtey” literally means Relations or rather relationships. The play was themed around conflicts in marital lives. In essence, it tells about the family in which a husband and wife have differences. There was mistrust between the couple which at the end, made the whole family go through anguish and misery. Six people performed this hour long play.

The play also featured a young woman, who happened to be the daughter (Sanditha) of Colonel Suresh Chowdry (Prof. Swapan Channa) and Principal Rajnej Chowdry (Ms. Kawinder Kalsi).

“Dramatics is my hobby and passion. Infact we are planning to organize a theater festival at campus this fall.” - Mr. Swapan Chanana, Unit Head

Mr. Sameer Thakur is the New Director for PCTE Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technologies. Not only has he relocated his office to a new spot on the first floor, where he has a live camera, loaded and ready to shoot all creatures that fly by or to his window. He has gone an extra mile to put up seeds and water bowl outside his window to attract them as well.

Mr. Thakur, who is not only an amateur photographer, but also an avid trekker, wine maker, and a vigorous coach all rolled in one. He has ambitious plans for his College of Hotel Management. E-Lounge shares an excerpt out of some of the things he is laying out for 2013-14 session. .. e - lounge | an endeavour | 20

New Name, New Office, New Plans

Professor Sameer Thakur, Dean, Faculty Hotel Management and Catering Technologies.

Welcome to the Faculty of Hospitality, Airlines and Tourism Management at PCTE. As I have recently taken up the charge as Director ,Hotel Management ,my road map for 2013-14 would be a tiny little step of the broader vision I hold and would like to see PCTE Group of Institutions in ten years from now. Actually my work is all cut out as PCTE is already galloping ahead under the able guidance of our Director General, Dr KNS Kang, a dynamic and visionary educationist. I have found PCTE to be a very energetic and a vibrant place and am all excited about making meaningful contributions to it.

“You arrive ready to work hard and focused on your career, we at PCTE will give you the opportunity and support to achieve your dreams”. - Prof. Sameer Thakur, Dean, IHM

Page 23: e-Lounge 2013

Apart of fine tuning and streamlining certain administrative procedures my basic stress would be on the proactive teaching and learning which I can assure will not be confined to the class rooms. My team and I would ensure that students are exposed to hands on practical training thereby offering a well-balanced education in a supportive environment to develop the 21st Century workforce.

I feel extra circular activities and community service are just as important as academics. Extracurricular can be anything, from a cultural club to a kazoo band just about anything outside of academics to show that you are a well rounded person and you have team skills, leadership skills and initiative. If PCTE doesn't have a club that meets your interest, start one.

e - lounge | an endeavour | 21

For students I would like to say “You arrive ready to work hard and focused on your career, we at PCTE will give you the opportunity and support to achieve your dreams”.

My goal for you as a student at PCTE institute of Hotel Management and Airlines & Tourism is that you gain a well rounded education so as you can become a well groomed thinking individual, who is not only able to take on today's global challenges

with confidence but also become a good human being. I know that once join us, you will be a changed pe rson , p ro fess iona l l y and personally, for the rest of your life. We will do our best to provide you with a strong liberal Hospitality education and a rich and memorable college experience.

My colleagues and I look forward to welcoming the Class of 2017.

College TrendsOn college campuses across the country, tiny glowing screens are taking over.

Computer company Dell released its first-quarter report in May 2013 revealing a 79% plummet in earnings as consumers turn from personal computers in favor of tablets and smart-phones.As a generation that's been online since a young age, college students aren't waiting to embrace the transition. Today's smaller, more mobile devices hold many of the academic and entertainment tools that once filled up a backpack. In an annual survey at PCTE Group of Institutes, it reveals t h a t a l o t m o r e P o s t Graduates, who find it a convenience were using a smartphone in 2012 as compared to those in 2010.

M s . H a r p r e e t K K a n g , Professor, IMC and Business Communication believes that student tablet ownership will rise steeply in the next 2-3 years. "It's not a fad," says Ms. Kavita Gujral, who is also an advertising professor at PCTE. "It's here, and it's going to actually move faster than the smartphone growth has in the last five or six years." The most popular tablet is the Galaxy device, followed closely by ipad, according to the survey. Many indigenous built tabs like Akash are now thronging schools and college. As an iPhone user, Inderbir, who completed PGDM is already familiar with Apple's operating system, and he said many of his friends have recommended going for the popular tablet. Since he already has experience using his iPhone to work on the campus, it will be an easy switch for all such users.

"Ipads are easy to carry, they are convenient & helpful, it helps me in making my powerpoint presentations, surfing on internet & chill out with friends via apps. For me an Ipad is the most resourceful thing I have ever had" - Simran Singh Sachdev, B.Sc-Biotech student

th14 December was yet another violent day in the history of America when a mindless shooting rampage in a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut left dead twenty children and six adults. Definitely not the first violent act of its kind, gun massacres have become a familiar occurrence with the shootings of Columbine, Virginia Tech and Aurora sti l l l ingering in our memories. Just like the aftermath of every other massacre, the Sandy Hook shootings have re-opened the debate over the gun laws in the Uni ted Sta tes . Once aga in speculation is rife about the political clout of the largest gun lobby in America, the Nat ional Ri f le Association, and its constant assertion of the Second Amendment that has, over generat ions, guaranteed every US citizen the right to bear arms. If I bring the argument thousands of miles into my own backyard, to the recent rape incident in Delhi, I can only, unapologetically, wonder if rape is in our culture.

Crime and Punishment - A Cultural Apocalypse?

Delhi is not the only unsafe city in the world, Indian government not the only slack government. Yet, the incidences of crime against women especially of sexual assault have always taken precedence over crime of another nature. We must not forget that the Indian nationalist struggle was a struggle for liberty and equality, and so was the American Civil War. Practices of sati, slavery and apartheid were abolished to guarantee equal rights. The responsibility to uphold and protect the virtues of equality, liberty and empowerment has long since been passed on to every citizen of the world. As Einstein had whimsically quipped, 'before God we are all equally wise, and equally foolish'. There are very few places in this world where you find the freedom to evolve, well at PCTE we aspire to build a culture where every individual can have the opportunity to figure out his/her potential. Now with freedom taken for granted we also aspire for positive approach, concept building, team work & innovative t h i n k i n g . E v e n t s l i k e B r i t i s h Parliamentary debate, where students came together to successfully organize International Level Competition marks huge potential in them. When I recall those days of the grand event, it surprises me how students responsible for Lodging & Boarding did not sleep for a week and were totally dedicated in providing comfort to visiting teams coming from all over the country and even two from Pakistan. A dozen students went on to work day and night in various units like

This academic year Institute conducted 96 Industrial Visits & 56 International Trips/Tours. The vital observation here is that maximum number of Trips were organized by the students of ATHM. The Travel club run by the students provides the cheapest rates for any kind of booking i .e. air- t icket ing, Hotel Reservation, Train reservation etc is a matter of appreciation.A full time buffet lunch restaurant cooked, served & managed by the students of Hotel Management is matter of pride. Similarly various health campaigns like Blood donation camps, eye check up camps etc are organized throughout the year by Pharma students. Rawar, Social responsibility week, Consumer Hub, Ijadi and many more activities are organized by Management students. Various softwares, workshops, web designing, language coding etc are conducted by IT students. In this whole process the amount of learning students have is huge. In this competitive world, bookish knowledge is not enough; it's very simple that we at PCTE provide students the freedom to experiment the written theories at real markets which helps them to groom professionally and discover their hidden talent.

It was amazing to see a huge turnout of partakers which was approximately 800 students, who participated in the yearly athletic meet organized at the Indo-Tibetan Border ground. The atmosphere was just right seeing as students make the occasion interesting and fun. On that day, there was only one language spoken and that is the language of sport which united all of us to be one (PCTEians). Despite the scorching sun it did not stop the students who were filled with zeal, energy and enthusiasm for taking part in the array of sports for example 100metre race, 400metre race, 1200 metre race, 2000metre race, long jump, shot put, relay race high jump for both girls and boys.

Outcome was as follows: The MBA students who won the first position in 2000metres, followed by the Pharmacy students who took the second place, third place was taken by BBA students.

As for long jump girls from BSc. airlines, tourism and hospitality management (ATHM) and B Pharmacy took the second spot, while the third place was bagged by BBA students. Geraldine in the girl's category and Harshpreet in the boys 'category were declared the best athletes.

Moreover, the Director of PCTE Group of Institutes said that events like the Annual Athletic Meet are a great source of inspiration for mental and physical development of the students. He also said that students should learn the art of team building and leadership which will help them in the future professional careers.
