    Sex Education

In accordance with the 1993 Education Act, the Governorswould like to state that sex education is taught as part of theschool curriculum.

Sex education in our school aims to be:

A partnership between children, parents, teachers andgovernors.

Given in a context that stresses Christian values in

    family life and human relationships.

For all children including those with physical learning oremotional difficulties

Parents are reminded that they have the right to withdrawtheir child from sex education lessons if they so wish. In thiscase, a letter from parents stating their wishes would be kepton file and other activities arranged for the child when these

lessons are taking place. Further information concerningschemes of work can be found in the sex education policy.

    Children with Special Educational Needs

The Education Act 1993 built a legal framework makingobligatory provision for children with special educationalneeds including those who find learning significantly moredifficult than the majority of their age and those with a

sensory, physical or other disability. The needs of individual pupils are met at Durweston byorganising levels of work within the same class, developingstrategies to observe the achievement of children andinvolving all staff in curriculum planning and the availability ofresources. The school makes provision for able and talentedpupils across the school. Detailed information can be found in

the Special Educational Needs policy, which is based on theCode of Practice.

    Music

Durweston has a good reputation for strong and tunefulsinging. Pupils and staff take part in singing every day and thechoir is well attended as is the family carol singing around thevillage at Christmas time. The children enjoy singing in partsin the annual whole-school musical production in the summerTerm.

At Durweston we are keen to encourage children to try playingdifferent musical instruments. Year 4 currently have wholeclass cello lessons through Wider Opportunities Funding andthere are peripatetic teachers who come to the school toteach: violin, cello, piano, flute, clarinet and drums. Musiclesson provision continues to be extended after invitingmusicians in to school to do demosand inspiring children tolearn. Anyone can start instrumental lessons after contacting

Mrs Crumplin. Reverend Stephen Coulter now offers a ukuleleclub too children and parent classes!

PARENTS AND THE SCHOOLParents are very positive about the school and the careand teaching their children receive. Church Schoolinspection - May 2010.

    Home and School

Through home visits and visiting playgroups and nurseries,

we establish contact with each child and her/his parentsbefore entry to school and we very much appreciate parentsbringing their child to school on preliminary visits before s/heenters. This enables both parent and child to becomeaccustomed to their new surroundings and teachers. To thisend we arrange three visits towards the end of the term beforethe child starts school and also a new parents' evening.

Home School Agreements are sent home annually for allchildren and their parents to sign.

    Parents' Help in School

Parental support is very valuable to the school in so manyways and there are areas of life in our school which would bealmost impossible without parents' help. All parent helpersare CRB checked for safeguarding purposes. We realise that

not everyone can commit themselves on a regular basis, although if they can this is most welcome. Equally theoccasional helping hand would be greatly appreciated.

We now have 5 Every Child Matters (ECM) Action Groupsand we are always looking for new volunteers to join thisstrong and effective parent team whose aim is to drive forward

the ECM agenda using the help of children, other parents andstaff when necessary.

    Parents' Evenings

We have what we call an 'open door' policy at our school.

This simply means that parents or prospective parents whowish to visit the school or spend time observing the childrenare encouraged to do so and no appointment is necessary.

In the autumn, spring and summer terms, parents' eveningsare held. Even though we welcome parents into school todiscuss their child's work at any time that is convenient to bothteacher and parent, we have found that holding a 'surgery' atan appointed time in the evening has been very much

    appreciated.Parent Teacher Association

The school has a very hard working P.T.A. Committee thathas raised a great deal of money for school use. Past fund-raising events have included our popular Yearbook, Cake

sales, Christmas cards, Christmas Craft Fayre, Easter eggraffle, May Fair, Childrens Summer Party & ice cream sales.

The A.G.M. is held in September. Please get involved!
