    Game Overview

    InMasques, wo o our players eachconrol a noble amily atending amasquerade ball. Each amily is vying or

    4 Family Cards

    Family cards indicae which o he our majoramilies (Conarini, Dandolo, Morosini, and

    Venier) each player conrols during he game.

    16 Guest Cards

    Gues cards represen he guess atending

    he masquerade ball. Each o he our majoramilies has hree gues cards. Each guescard has an influence value (24) prined inhe upper-lef corner. Te Foscari amily isneural and is no conrolled by any player.

    18 Agent Cards

    Te agen cards represen agens haamilies can hire o disrup oher guess a

    he ball in various ways. Tere are six ypeso agensassassin, couresan, gondolier,guard, hie, and radereach wih aunique abiliy (see Agen Card Abiliieson page 12).

    16 Palace Cards

    Palace cards represen hevarious secions o he palace.

    Tese cards show one o woicons: eiher a duca icon (1)or a avor icon (2).

    15 Favor okens

    Favor okens represen he avor haplayers wish o gain rom each guild.

    20 Favor Cards

    Favor cards rack he number o avor

    okens a player gains in each guild (seeFavor Card Example on page 7). Eachavor card corresponds o one o he fiveguildsclergy (1), vinner (2), merchan(3), miliary (4), and scribe (5).

    Se up he game as ollows. (For a game

    wih wo or hree players, see page 10.)

    1. Determine First Player:Give he firsplayer card o he younges player.

    2. Distribute Family Cards:Randomly dealone amily card o each player. Each playerplaces his amily card in his play area.

    3. Distribute Favor Cards:Give eachplayer one avor card o each ype: clergy,

    vinner, merchan, miliary, and scribe.Players place heir avor cards in heir play

    area wih he lions head side aceup andhe 0 oriened a he op o he card.

    4. Build the Palace:Placehe palace card wih hedoor icon in a corner o he

    cenral play area. Tis is hefirs corner o he palace.

    Proceeding clockwise rom his corner,place he remaining palace cards in hecenral play area orming a square. Sar

    wih a palace card wih a duca icon and

    alernae beween palace cards wih avoricons and palace cards wih duca icons(see Seup Diagram on page 4).

    On eiher side o each palace card, leavea card-sized space o represen a vacan. Each side o he palace hasfive palace cards and our hallways.

    5. Create the Ducat oken Supply:Placehe duca okens in he middle o hepalace o orm he duca oken supply.

    6. Distribute Ducat okens: Give oneduca oken o each player.

    7. Create the Favor oken Supply:Placeall avor okens acedown (icon sidedown) in he middle o he palace andmix hem ogeher o orm he avoroken supply.

    8. Create the Agent Card Supply:Separae he agen cards by card ypeino six piles o hree cards. Arrange eachpile in order o duca oken cos; placehe mos expensive card on botom and

    he leas expensive card on op.Te cos o each agen card is equal ohe number o duca symbols prinedalong he op o he card (see AgenCard Anaomy on page 2).

    Te Game Round

    Masquesis played over a series o gamerounds. Each round consiss o hree phasesha are resolved in he ollowing order:

    1. Preparation Phase:Place duca oravor okens on vacan palace cards.Shuffle, deal, and draf gues cards.

    2. Action Phase:Play gues and agencards.

    3. Resolution Phase:Resolve palacecards and collec okens.

    Afer compleing all hree phases, a new

    game round begins. Te game coninues inhis way unil one player gains enough avorokens o win he game.

    Te Preparation Phase

    During he preparaion phase, he firsplayer places one duca oken rom heduca oken supply on each vacan palacecard wih a duca icon. Addiionally, hefirs player randomlyakes one avor okenrom he supply and places i faceupon

    each vacan palace card wih a avor icon.Te firs player shuffles all gues cards andrandomly deals our cards o each player.

    Ten, players simulaneously draf cardsby repeaing he ollowing seps unil eachplayer has our cards in his play area:

    1. Choose one gues card and place iacedown.

    2. Pass he remaining cards o he playeron he lef and ake he cards rom heplayer on he righ.

    Afer drafing, each player akes he ourcards in his play area ino his hand.

    Te Action PhaseDuring he acion phase, saring wih hefirs player and proceeding clockwise, each

    player akes his urn by perorming one ohe ollowing acions:

    Play one guest card

    Hire one agent card

    Pass

    When playing cards, players place hemin vacan hallways (see Acion andResoluion Phase Example on page8). Aferall hallways are occupied, heacion phase ends and he resoluion phase

    begins. Gues cards remaining in a playershand have no effec his round.

    Play One Guest Card

    Te player chooses one gues card romhis hand and places i aceup in a vacanhallway.

    Hire One Agent Card

    Te player hires one agen card ollowinghese seps:

    1. Te player chooses which agen ype he

    wishes o hire.

    2. He pays he cos o he op card on haagen pile, reurning ha number o hisduca okens o he duca oken supply.

    3. He akes he op card in ha agens pileand places i in any vacan hallway.

    4. He mayresolve he agen cards abiliy(see page 12).

    Pass

    I a player has no more cards in his handand chooses no o hire an agen card, hemus pass. Te nex player in clockwiseorder akes his urn. A player who passesmay hire and play an agen card during alaer urn in he acion phase.

    Te Resolution PhaseDuring he resoluion phase, saring

    Resolve Palace Cards

    o resolve a palace card, compare heinfluence values on each card occupying hewo adjacen hallways.

    Winning the Game

    Clean Up Play Area

    Afer resolving all palace cards, he firsplayer reurns all agen cards occupyinghallways o he game box, flips anyacedown okens aceup, and gahers allgues cardsincluding any gues cardssill in players hands. Ten, he passes hefirs player card o he player o his lef.

    Te oken remains on he palace card or henex round i any o hese condiions apply:

    Boh cards have he same influence

    value. A Foscari gues card has he higher

    influence value.

    An agen card has he higherinfluence value.

    Favor Card Example
