The Encyclopedia of Networked and Virtual Organizations intends, with your collaboration, to contribute to a clarification of this new paradigm and to document the most relevant contributions towards the introduction of networked, dynamic, agile and virtual organisational models, definitions, taxonomies, reference models and architectures, opportunities and practices.

Mission:

The mission of the proposed encyclopedia is to create a repository of the main developments regarding the virtual organization in broad sense: definitions, characteristics, comparisons, advantages, reference models and architectures, practices, enabling technologies, best practices. It is intended to constitute a comprehensive state-of-the-art documentation, contributing to the clarification of the wide collection of definitions and specifications of this emerging paradigm.

Networked and Virtual Organization

• Virtual Museum – Organized collection of electronic artefacts and information resources – virtually anything that can be digitized. This collection may include paintings, drawings, photographs, diagrams, graphs, recordings, video segments, newspaper articles and transcripts of interviews, numerical databases and can also host other items which can be saved on its file server. It may also offer references to relevant resources for the museum around the world.

• Virtual Organization in Net – Image of a real entity which has net structure that can be accessed through a data communication net.

ENIAC ?

"In the event ENIAC was turned off on 9 November 1946 to ready it for the move to Aberdeen; it was not started up again until 29 July 1947 and thus was inoperable for a nine-month period. It then became once again a most useful instrument, and continued operating until 11:45 P.M. on 2 October 1955. It was then disassembled, and a part of it forms part of a most interesting exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C." (Goldstine, 1993)

Nos U.S.A. !!!

"In 1975 I was told there was a "mountain" of used mainframes at a dump in Elizabethton, Tennessee. I was working in a city near Elizabethton at the time. I did not beleive the story, so the fellow that told me about it took me to this "dump". Sure enough, he was right. UNIVAC took trade-in mainframes and sent them to this junk yard. There were mainframe CPUs, disk drives, tape drives, printers piled as high as a four-story building. Many were complete systems, taken out almost while running. I asked the man that ran the place if a person could buy the computers, many of which still had disks still in the drives & tapes mounted. He told me that he could sell them "as is" to anyone, all he wanted was an amount equal to the value of the gold and silver in the machines. He offered to sell me a compltete CPU for $28!"
