The Story of theMARTINIIts true origin is still debated among

purists. The earliest records point to a 1862cocktail called The Martinez. Another storycites its origin in 1870 at Julio RichelieusSaloon in the town of Martinez, California.Still, others insist that Jerry Thomas of SanFrancisco was first to list the Martinez

cocktail in his bar book printed in 1887.

Over the years the Martini Cocktail has

become one of the best known alcoholic bever-

ages due to its simplicity, sophistication and the

Pop Culture socialites that drank them. Today

the craze for designer Martinis live on with end-less variations that eventually lead to the demand

for a specific type of glassware to serve them in.

The tapered shape of the Martini glass is

to keep the heat of your hands from warming

the contents, hence its long slim stem.

Candy is dandy. But liquor is quicker.

A popular tale amongst mixologists is about a

New Orleans bartender named Peychaud who servedhis patrons a drink named the egg-cup or cocquetier

in French which was shortened to cocktay and even-

tually became cocktail. The French word Coquetel

may also have had something to do with cocktail as it

was the name of a mixed drink served to French

    soldiers during the American Revolution.

TheMUDDLINGwas first used by slaves onthe sugar cane plantations, it was the original, organic

method of mixing spirits with natural flavor. It spread like

wild fire through the tropical Carribean Islands and

eventually into South America, giving rise to the currentglobal Caipirinha & Mojito craze.

    The Story of theNIGHTCAP

All Nightcaps are served as 11/2ounces.

The nightcap as a drink is an expres-

sion that dates back to the 1700s, when

folks donned nightcaps as a way of warm-

ing themselves and thus promoting better

sleep. In a sense, the nightcap drink, which

can really be any type of alcoholic drink, does provide warmth, and also generally

makes one a little sleepy. Alcohol at first

sedates, and it lowers the bodys tempera-

    ture, making one feel warmer.

The story ofSHOTSAccording to the Oxford English Dictionary,

the word shotglass first appeared in print in the1940s. A story ties the birth of the shot glass to the

sound of a gunshot. Certain fraternal organizations

have a custom of drinking toasts from specially

shaped glasses known as "firing glasses", which

comes from the French calling the toast "feu" or

"fire". If the glass is slammed on the table, it makesa sound like a gunshot a firing glass then

    becomes a "shot glass".

The most popular origin story is that the

shot glass originated in the Western saloons of the

Old West. It explains that cowboys would trade a

cartridge (bullet plus powder and primer encased

in brass) for a small amount of alcohol."Money can't buy happiness. But it canbuy a Fifth of Jack Daniels, which will helpto take the edge off of reality for a little while."

The story ofWINEThe first indications of wine production can

be traced as far back as 8000 BC. Scholars con-tinue to debate its true country of origin. The gen-

eral consensus suggests emergence from the

    Middle East.

There is an ancient Persian tale of a Princess

who lost favor with the King. She attempted to

poison herself by eating some table grapes that

had "spoiled" in a jar. This caused the princess to

become intoxicated and her wild antics throughout

    the night humored the guests of the royal court;

this eventually helped her regain her fathers favor.

The King shared his daughter's discovery with hiskingdom and decreed an increase in the produc-

    tion of "spoiled" grapes...

Wine production in Canada has only been

around for 200 years. The modern day success of

Canadian wine goes back only a quarter of a cen-

tury. Since the creation of the Vinters QualityAlliance (VQA), the voluntary initiatives taken by the

leaders of the Canadian wine industry has set a

standard comparable to the worlds most

    renowned wines.

Age is just a number. It's totally irrelevantunless, you happen to be a bottle of wine.

The story ofBEERThe origin of beer is linked to the nomadic

hunter gathers and their transition to agriculturalfarmers as far back as 15,000 years. There is an

ongoing debate between bakers and brewers

as to which came first, bread or beer. Both use

yeast as a process of fermentation and one can

even use bread to brew beer! The origin of beer

can be traced to the ancient kingdoms ofMesopotamia in the Middle East.

Today there are countless types of brews

derived from different kinds of yeasts, hops and

starch sources. The popularity of light beers can

be traced back to World War 2. Food short-

ages led to the use of more malt for fermenta-

tion resulting in a lighter beer that appealed to

the female market left behind on the homefront.

    The story of

GINGin was first created in Holland duringthe mid 17th century by the physician Franci-

sus Sylvius. The name was derived from the

dutch word Jenever which means Juniper.

Originally distilled from Juniper Berries, thereare several distinct styles of Gin which

infuses different blends of citruses, spices

and botanicals. The misconception about its

British origins stem from the most common

style of Gin called London Dry Gin which

was popularized by the Gin and Tonic duringthe 18th century.

in the 1400s, distilled from grain or potatoes.

People near the area of vodka's probable

The story ofTEQUILAThis proud Mexican export was first

recorded in the 1600s. It is distilled from Blue

Agave. By international law, Tequila must be

produced in the state of Jalisco. Mexico is

very sensitive about its exclusive rights; the

concept of flavored Tequilas has stirred con-troversy amongst its purists. Blanco (silver),

Joven (gold), Resposado and Anejo denotes

the aging process from youngest to oldest

    respectively. The common misconception

about worms in Tequila was thanks to a

clever marketing gimmick to push the salesof Mezcal which unofficially was Tequila

    made outside of Jalisco.

The story ofRUMFirst recorded during the 17th century

in the warm Caribbean Islands, Rum is dis-

tilled from sugar cane & molasses. Several

types of flavors come from the different aging

processes which produce amber, dark and

spiced varieties. The association with pirates

and buccaneers stem from privateers illegally

smuggling rum against the will of the British

Navy. Books such as Treasure Island

romanticized the idea of rum loving pirates

and helped promote popular brands such as

The story ofSCOTCHScotch is a whiskey that must be

in order to earn its designation. The first writ-

All Scotch is Whiskey but not all whiskey is

Scotch; all Scotch must be aged in oak bar-
