Final 4/21/15 1 DRESS AND GROOMING The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Teachers and administrators will be responsible for screening students for dress code violations. The campus principal may approve any departure or exception to the dress code for the purpose of extracurricular, school sponsored, or athletic activities. Medical exceptions shall be made upon submittal of a physician’s written statement. If the campus principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student will be assigned to in-school suspension (ISS) for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Clothing must be neat, clean, and appropriate for school or school occasions and not distracting to the educational program. A student must be responsible for the way in which he or she dresses. Failure to comply with the dress code is a Student Code of Conduct violation. If the mode of dress is deemed inappropriate for school, efforts will be made to contact/notify the parent or guardian and the student will be required to change clothes. Boys and girls should dress modestly, neatly, and appropriately. Clothing should be of an appropriate style, fit, cut and length for school. Campus uniforms are required in grades PK-8. High school students must comply with the district standard dress code. Contact the campus principal for information on additional dress code requirements.

DRESS AND GROOMING

The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Teachers and administrators will be responsible for screening students for dress code violations. PK - 6th Dress Code

Acceptable  Dress   SPECIAL  COMMENTS  AND  INTERPRETATIONS  

The campus principal reserves the right to alter the dress code rules as deemed necessary to maintain a safe and orderly environment conducive to learning.

Shirts Blouses

Polo style shirt (as per campus colors-see campus colors.) School Spirit T-shirt. Shirts that are oversized must be tucked in at all times. “Oversized” refers to a shirt being longer than the bottom of regular pant pockets. School Spirit T-shirts must promote coyote spirit. Homemade Spirit T-Shirts are not allowed. School Spirit T-Shirts must be deemed appropriate by the campus principal.

Students are prohibited from wearing shirts that:

• Are undersized and expose the midriff when the arms are raised.

• Depict or reference alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons, nudity, gang affiliation, violence, vulgar or obscene language or images, and/or insults to race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, or other emblems or writing that may be expected to cause a material or substantial disruption of or interference with normal school operations.

• Are altered, such as fraying, braiding, weaving or ripping the material.

• Are not buttoned appropriately.

Jeans Pants Slacks Shorts

Standard 5 pocket blue denim jeans. Blue denim skinny jeans. Standard 5 pocket khaki pant. Standard 5 pocket navy pant. Standard 5 pocket khaki capri pant. Standard 5 pocket navy capri pant. Standard blue denim capri pant. Standard navy short. Standard khaki short. Cargo Shorts: Blue denim and khaki. Capri pants must fall below the knee and be hemmed, no cutoffs or frayed edges. All bottoms must be fitted at the natural waist and have belt loops. Pants, capri pants, shorts, skirts and all other bottoms must be hemmed (no cut offs, or frayed edges). Shorts must extend to within 4” of the knee in a kneeling position, measured front and back.

Students are prohibited from wearing jeans, pants, slacks, or shorts that:

• Are torn, have holes or frays on any part of them that expose the skin and/or undergarments.

• Are low-rise, oversized or baggy. • Are not hemmed. • Drag on the floor. • Resemble leggings, tights, leotards, bicycle

shorts, pajamas, and similar garments that are considered undergarments or nightwear.

• Depict or reference alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons, nudity, gang affiliation, violence, vulgar or obscene language or images, and/or insults to race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, or other emblems or writing that may be expected to cause a material or substantial disruption of or interference with normal school operations.

• Are made of spandex, jersey knit or other form-fitting material.

• Are low rise, baggy or oversized bottoms. • Colored denim bottoms.

Boys may not wear capri pants.

• Are torn, have holes or frays on any part of them that expose the skin and/or undergarments.

Sweaters Jackets Coats

Sweaters, jackets, and coats must be appropriate for school. Jackets, sweaters, and coats must be worn over dress code shirts.

Students are prohibited from wearing sweaters, jackets, or coats that:

• Are oversized or undersized. • Depict or reference alcohol, drugs, tobacco,

weapons, nudity, gang affiliation, violence, vulgar or obscene language or images, and/or insults to race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, or other emblems or writing that may be expected to cause a material or substantial disruption of or interference with normal school operations.

• Are of a trench style. Jewelry/ Makeup

Girls may wear earrings on the lobe or outer ear only.

Students are prohibited from wearing: • Body piercing jewelry (tongue rings, lip rings,

eyebrow rings, nose rings, belly rings, or other unnatural area rings that are visible).

• Gauges, ear spikes or spacers. • Hazardous jewelry or jewelry that poses a health

issue or disrupts the educational process. • Rubber loom jewelry (also known as looms). • Earrings that exceed ½ inch. • Wearing or displaying identical or similar jewelry

that may indicate gang association and/or membership.

• Make-up and false fingernails. • Black lipstick or nail polish. • Earrings (boys). • Jewelry representing drugs, alcohol, sex, nudity,

crime, violence, gangs, profanity, altered religious symbols, racial slurs, or any other deemed inappropriate by the campus principal.

PK - 6th Dress Code

Hair Hair must be clean and neatly groomed and kept out of the face. Spiked hair (faux hawks) is allowed, but it must not exceed one inch from the scalp.

Students are prohibited from wearing:

• Unnatural hair color—natural highlights are acceptable (hair may not be dyed, streaked, or highlighted in any unnatural hair color(s) i.e. red, blue, green, pink, purple, etc.).

• Hairstyles that poses a health issue or disrupts the educational process.

• A mohawk. • Hairstyles or haircuts that expose the scalp or are

unevenly cut, have designs, symbols, or tails sculptured in the hair. Haircuts that have side parts that are designed as part of the hairstyle will be allowed, i.e. “the gentleman’s cut.” Side parts must not exceed beyond the crown of the head.

BOYS: • Hair tails (pig, pony, rat, etc.) or braids. • Hairstyle extending past the bottom of a collared

shirt.

GIRLS: • Hair curlers.

Shoes/Other Accessories

Shoes must be worn at all times and considered safe and appropriate. Tennis shoes for P.E. are required. All footwear must have a heel strap.

Students are prohibited from wearing:

• Steel-toe footwear. • Toe shoes (five finger, etc.) • Shoes with wheels/rollers. • Shoes with metal taps. • Slippers. • Flip flops • Shoes that have a sole that exceed one half inch

(1/2) inch (grades PK-4). • Shoes that have a sole that exceed one (1) inch

(grades 5-6). • Sunglasses and non-prescriptive dark glasses. • Bandanas, hats, caps, beanies, and hoods. • Accessories that advertise or representing drugs,

alcohol, concert bands, tobacco, sex, nudity, crime, violence, gangs, profanity, altered religious symbols, skulls and racial slurs.

No article of apparel shall be worn that will in any way damage school property, create a safety hazard, or create a material or substantial disruption to the school environment. No visible tattoos. Displaying undergarments or undergarments worn as clothing will not be allowed. Clothing that is low cut or revealing will not be allowed. Nightwear/pajamas will not be permitted.

Navy blue and gray are the universal polo shirt color for elementary, intermediate and middle schools. **School Spirit T-shirts must promote coyote spirit. Homemade Spirit t-shirts are not allowed. School spirit t-shirts must be deemed appropriate by the campus principal. Spirit t-shirts must not be altered such as fraying, braiding, weaving or ripping the material.

Please Note: If students disregard the standards set by the student dress code, they may lose their privilege of wearing certain types of clothing or apparel on special occasions. If the campus principal determines that a student’s grooming violates the dress code, the student shall be given the opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to lunch detention or in-school suspension. A parent or parent designee may bring an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline procedures will be followed in all cases.

Students placed at the district alternative education program (DAEP), will be required to wear a plain solid orange, gray or navy collared shirt or blouse. All students must wear khaki slacks or standard 5 pocket blue jeans. Upon enrollment at DAEP, students will be provided additional information regarding dress code at this campus.

• All other dress code rules apply.

Students assigned to DAEP must adhere to dress code and discipline standards as directed by the principal. The campus principal reserves the right to alter the dress code rules as deemed necessary to maintain a safe and orderly environment conducive to learning.

Shirts Blouses

• Shirts must be a collared burnt/Texas orange, black, navy or any shade of gray polo.

• An administrative approved school spirit/club shirt.

• NO V-NECK t-shirts. • T-shirts may not have holes or designs cut into

them. • Logos cannot be more than 2 inches in size.

• No tank or spaghetti strapped tops. • No oversized shirts. • No under-sized shirts that expose the midriff in any

way.

Pants Slacks

Denim Jeans: • Standard 5 pocket blue, black or gray denim

jeans. • Blue denim, black or gray skinny jeans. Pants/slacks: • Standard 5 pocket khaki, black or gray pants.

Capri Pants: • Standard 5 pocket twill cotton khaki, black or

gray. • Standard 5 pocket denim in blue, black or

gray.

Cargo Pants: • Blue denim, black denim, or gray denim. • Khaki, gray or black twill cotton. All bottoms must fit appropriately/adequately at the waist and crotch. They must be worn at the waist or above the hips.

• No baggy pants/jeans. • No wind pants/shorts.* • No sweat pant/shorts.* • Tights/leggings/spandex pants may only be worn

UNDER clothing that meets dress code requirements. • Pants may not have holes in the fabric above the knees.

Shorts/Skorts/Skirts: • Standard twill cotton in khaki, gray or black. • Standard denim in blue, gray or black. Cargo Shorts: • Blue denim, black denim, or gray denim • Khaki, gray or black twill cotton They must extend to the knee or just above the knee (within the horizontal measurement of a dollar bill) but no lower than the knee cap.

•Athletic shorts will not be permitted.

9th - 12th Dress Code

The campus principal has the discretion on all matters concerning the interpretation of the student dress code, including matters not specifically covered in this document, and will make the final determination as to what constitutes appropriate attire. Medical exceptions shall be made upon certification from the physician of the student.

*Extracurricular activities may require special dress requirements. Exceptions and additional requirements to the dress code may be made in supervised physical activities, some extracurricular activities, or school sponsored events/classes as determined by the campus principal.

Acceptable Dress

SPECIAL COMMENTS AND INTERPRETATIONS

Shoes • Shoes must be worn at all times. • Shoes with laces must be tied. • All shoes must have a back or heel strap.

• House shoes, flip-flops, sandals without a heel strap, and steel-toed shoes/boots are not allowed. Shoes with wheels are not allowed.

• Heels on shoes may be no higher than 2 inches.

Hair • Hair must be clean and neatly groomed and kept out of eyes.

• Boys’ hair must not be longer than the bottom of a standard shirt collar.

• Hair may be spiked or shaped into a fauxhawk as long as it is no more than one inch in height.

• Sideburns may only extend to the end of the earlobe.

• Boys must be clean-shaven daily.

• No mohawks. • No indentations or fade past or below the ears. Haircuts that

have side parts that are designed as part of the hairstyle will be allowed, i.e. “the gentleman’s cut.” Side parts must not exceed beyond the crown of the head.

• No unnatural hair coloring --- natural highlights are acceptable. Hair may not be dyed, streaked, or highlighted in any unnatural hair color(s) i.e. red, blue, green, pink, purple, etc. This includes but is not limited to: braids, ponytails, weaves, wigs, beads, etc.

Jewelry Tattoos

• Earrings may be worn on the lobe of the ear only.

• Gauges may be worn with a solid covering, or cap, that does not let anything pass through them.

• No oversized necklaces, dog chains, etc. • No visible body piercings other than the lobe of the ear. • No ear spikes or spacers. • No visible tattoos.

General • Coats/Jackets/Hoodies may be worn but must not be more than one size larger than the person wearing it.

• All students are to wear their current school year identification badge in front and above or at the waist during the school day.

• Hoods on jackets, caps, beanies, hair scarves, or bandanas may not be worn without permission from an administrator.

• Undergarments may not show. • All layers of clothing must meet dress code standards. • Clothing, jackets/coats/hoodies, belt buckles, apparel, etc.

may not depict or insinuate reference to any type of profanity, vulgarity, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, violence, weapons, gang affiliation.

Gang Related Attire

• Items of this nature are strictly prohibited. This includes but is not limited to: documented insignias, symbols, color combinations of clothing, hair styles/cuts, etc.

• No oversized necklaces, dog chains, etc. • No baggy pants/jeans or over-sized shirts. • No short pants worn with knee-high socks. • Pants worn low, or “sagging” and cuffed inside on the

bottom are prohibited.
