Central Vermont Adult Basic Education, Inc. Local Partnerships in Learning

Serving Washington, Orange and Lamoille Counties

Central Vermont Adult Basic Education, Inc. is an organization of students, com-munity members and teachers in Washington, Orange, and Lamoille Counties committed to developing, evaluating and providing accessible literacy instruction for adults and teens in the belief that a literate person has the essential key for self-understanding and for full and active membership in the world. Our working strategy has two parts for the realization of full literacy: providing basic education instruction for students and involving the entire community in the encouragement of their efforts.

Time passes so quickly. Fiscal Year 2016 was added to CVABE’s long, rich and stable 50 year history of providing basic literacy and the broader array of adult education services which create life changing opportunities for hundreds of central Vermont adults and teens. For those close to CVABE’s day-to-day operations it was not just a “typical” program year. The year was culminated by a grand anniversary celebration of 50 years of service delivery. We are so grateful for and proud of the publication Snapshots of History, authored by Mary Leahy, former long-time CVABE Executive Team mem-ber, which will serve as a critical archival document into our future. If you would like to receive a copy of our Snapshots document, please contact the CVABE main office. Another pivotal happening during the year was the completion of our five-year strategic plan update. As an organization we have accomplished a great deal on an annual basis over the past 50 years of provid-ing community-based adult education and literacy services throughout Washington, Orange and Lamoille Counties, yet we do not grow complacent. We have much work to do into the future. Following are the strategic plan goals approved by the CVABE Board of Directors: Goal I Increase the number of students to whom we provide accessible and effective adult education

and literacy services, with a special focus on Adult Basic Education (ABE) level students 25 years and older.

Goal II Ensure that adult learners with diverse needs are aware of and can access CVABE’s resources

to improve their lives. Goal III Strengthen CVABE’s long-term sustainability and grow organizational capacity to extend our

reach and impacts. Goal IV Prioritize and cultivate strategic partnerships to achieve our mission in an evolving social context. A slightly more descriptive summary of these strategic goals can be found on our web-site.

Year after year, we have the privilege of witnessing adult students strive to reach their full potential. By the end of Fiscal 2016, 431 students had

boldly pursued improving their lives through education and either met or made progress with their academic, career and life goals. Personalized instruction was provided to each of these students through the expertise and dedication of CVABE’s 20 member professional staff and cadre of 128 volunteers.

“Literacy is the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman, and child can realize his or her full potential” Kofi Annan

Students’ individual accomplishments were many. Collectively those accomplishments included:

28% of students in the functional literacy program (with academic skills at or below the 8th grade level) increased their reading, writing, and/or math literacy skill levels to the high school readiness level.

61% of students with high school level skills and a goal to do so, earned a high school creden-tial.

53 students were immigrants or refugees. Of those English Language Learners, 36% improved their citizenship skills. 25% of those eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship this year, passed offi-cial exam and became U.S. Citizens.

42% of students with the goal to be active in their children’s education and literacy development met their goal. 42% of students with the goal to do so, improved their work readiness. 27% of students with the goal to obtain a job, got a new or better job. 49% of students with the goal to do so, retained their current jobs.

Our strong and vibrant volunteer ranks grew by 3%:

Volunteers donated a total of 5,553 service hours, an increase of 12% over the prior year.

54 (42%) new volunteers learned about our services and joined our ranks.

74 (58%) of the volunteers who worked with us in the prior year continued service in 2016. Every year CVABE students make remarkable progress and realize their education and life goals. Some of them stop attending before completing their goals, yet we always welcome them back when they are ready to resume their education pursuits. It is in partnership with our volunteers and community service partners (schools, libraries, businesses, social service agencies, and other non-profit organizations) that we provide education opportunities which empower our students to dream, believe, learn and achieve whatever they set out to do to improve their lives. Within the following pages of this annual report, you will find additional information about the students, the volunteers who worked in partnership with us, the donors who supported our efforts and the overall state of our finances during the period July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016. All of this is just a brief glimpse into the human stories of hard work, sacrifice, and generosity. CVABE’s gratitude to the individuals, groups, businesses, foundations, towns and city supporters is unlim-ited. Thank you for recognizing the needs of our students, for helping to direct the organization, and for ensur-ing the resources needed to deliver local, effective, and responsive services. Most importantly, thank you for your role in helping so many students to achieve their goals and reach their potential.

We know that our students learn best when the instruc-tion is responsive to their learning needs and interests

and when they feel respected and supported in their academic efforts. CVABE provides Adult Educa-tion and Literacy services to the 47 central Vermont towns and cities. Staff work through six strategi-cally located learning centers and reach out into the nearby service area. Community volunteers are recruited, trained, and supported by the organization’s professional staff to provide essential support and encouragement to their neighbors.

Central Vermont residents 16 and older in need of services are provided access to CVABE’s core programs:

* Basic Skills: Reading, Writing, Math, and Computer Literacy * English Language Learning and Preparation for U.S. Citizenship * High School Diploma and GED Programs * Career, Technical Training and College readiness

Working in partnership with the professional staff, 128 volunteers advanced the essential literacy work of CVABE.

CVABE’s two-part working strategy for the realization of full literacy - providing basic education in-struction for adults and teens and involving the entire community in the encouragement of their efforts - is extremely powerful. Lives change and improve. Our students improved their skills in reading, writing, math and computer literacy. Many obtained high school credentials, gained or improved employment, learned financial literacy skills, stopped the cycle of illiteracy in their families, rose out of poverty, achieved U.S. Citizenship, voted or registered to vote for the first time, and so much more.

Volunteers supported CVABE 431 students all along the way with their education pursuits. They donated a total of 5,553 service hours resulting in an in-kind service value of $199,155:

Instruction: 3,820 hours = $152,818 Board of Directors: 292 hours = $17,490 Office Support: 511 hours = $10,225 Travel: 556 hours = $8,339 Professional Development: 191 hours = $5,730 Other (includes community outreach, publicity, and organizational planning): 183 hours = $4,553
