IntroductionMotorsport is a dangerous event. It is without
doubt, the most dangerous form of sporting endeavor that has consistently challenge the notion of acceptable risk.
The issue of safety in motorsport cannot just be ignored.
Organisers must ensure a safe and healthy workplace.
Personnel working at motorsport event must be properly trained and equipped.

Definition of Risk Quantifiable likelihood of loss or less than
expected returns. Is an expression of the impact of an undesired
event, in terms of event severity and event likelihood.
The expectation that a threat may succeed and the potential damage that can occur.

DefinitionRISK = likelihood X severity
Likelihood (probability of occurrence)An event likely to occur within specific period or
in specified circumstances.Severity (of outcome)
Is outcome from an event ,such as severity of injury/health of people or damage to
property or environment.

Definition of Risk ManagementThe process of analyzing exposure to risk and
determining how to best handle such exposure. The process of assessing risk and acting in
such a manner or prescribing policies and procedures, so as to minimize loss associated with such risk.

Selection of Control Control is the elimination or inactivation of a
hazard such that the hazard does not pose any risk to anyone who enter into an area or work on equipment in the course of scheduled work.
Selection of control :a. Evaluating and selecting short / long term
controlb. Implementing short term measures until
permanent control in place.c. Implementing long term control.

Training and CompetencyPersonnel expected to function at motorsports
event should have the knowledge and skill to:a. Recognize hazards.b. Take safety measures to protect themselves.c. Take appropriate actions that might reduce
the severity of the incident.d. Call for emergency assistance.e. Take appropriate measures to assist
or rescue victims.f. Implement procedures to return to
routine operations.

Track Design & Its Safety FeaturesNeed to:
anticipate points on the circuit where accidents are likely to happen. Different circuits have different problems. New circuits are ‘safer’ than older circuits.
Safety FeaturesGravel Traps & Run-Off Zones.Concrete Barriers, Guards Rails & Catch Fences.Tyre Walls.Track Surfaces.

Personal Protective EquipmentCommensurate with the hazards associated
with their assignment.Fit and comfortable to wear.Maintained and stored according to
manufacturer's instructions.
N/B :PPE is designed to give a specific level of
protection and the level should not be exceeded.

Eye Protection
Possibility of hazards to the eyes.− e.g. : flying debris, dust, chemical splash, blood
borne pathogen, heat, glare, radiation from welding / cutting.
Use face or eye protection as appropriate.

Foot ProtectionReduce hazards of slip and falls.Ensure sole grip, sole stability and ankle
support.Types depend on terrain, surface conditions,
and tasks performed.EMS personnel should wear closed-toe
protective footwear, a sole with heel, made of leather or flame resistant material.

Hand ProtectionDepends on degree of dexterity required, and
duration & frequency of exposure to hazards.Track clean up personnel – gloves that
protect from sharp objects, rough surfaces and heat.
Fire marshals – gloves that provide thermal protection, cut resistance, dexterity, and grip.
Extrication team – as above
N/B :Always follow universal precaution.

Head Protectiona. Impact Protection
• Pit area fire crews – consider wearing head protection that provides impact protection.
• Drivers – must wear helmets and be restrained with safety belt at all time.
b. Thermal Protection• Using a protective hood.• Protects from fire flash.• Provides limited protection
to head, face and neck.

Hearing ProtectionShould be worn by all personnel exposed to a
high noise level (>90dB).Implement Hearing Conservation Program.
N/B :NIHL is Irreversible.

GarmentsAvoid wearing clothing with poor thermal
stability such as nylon or polyester.EMS personnel should wear garments that
meet firefighting standards.Should provide function identification and
visibility within operational environment.
