Black mustard a profitableproposition in Deccan Plateau

The NALMOT met farmers ofSubhareddypalyam village in Kurnool district ofAndhra Pradesh, who were cultivating blackmustard (Brassica nigra). Locally known as“Awalu”, the crop was under cultivation in about6000 acre spread across 30-40 villages nearRegional Agricultural Research Station,Nandyal. The farmers broadcast it in the paddyfield three days before harvest in the first fortnightof Dec and in 90-100 days, obtain an averageyield of 7.5 q/ha with an expenditure of aboutRs. 6500.00 on local variety, one irrigation, ureaas nutrient and labour. The seed is sold @ Rs.6000.00 per quintal, thus making it a veryremunerative crop with little investment. TheRegional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyalshould take up the planned research programmeto popularize the crop.

DRMR participate in National Level Monitoring Teamfor Andhra Pradesh

RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS

Ovule count and embryo sac structure in somemembers of family Brassicaceae

The present investigation was conducted with the objectivesto optimize ovule clearing method in rapeseed- mustard andto identify the genotypess having more number of ovules/gynoecia (more the number of ovule in gynoecia higher theseeds in siliqua). Five cultivars of Brassica juncea and oneeach of B. carinata, B. napus, B. tournefortii, B. rapa, B.nigra, C. abyssinica, Eruca sativa and Sinapis alba wereselected and raised during rabi 2009-2010. Tiny, un-pollinatedbuds were harvested prior to anthesis and fixed in FAA (20%formalin, 10% acetic acid and 70% ethanol, V/V) for 48 hrs. After complete incubation, the fixed buds were dissected understereo zoom microscope. Isolated pistils, stored in 70%ethanol, were passed through series of alcohol and methylsalicilate – MS (70% alcohol85% alcohol100% alcohol[three times]1:1 alcohol + MS1:3 alcohol+MS100%MS[three times]) for ovule clearing. Retention time given at eachstep of treatment was 2 hrs. Ten plants from each selectedcultivars were taken and40-45 cleared ovules plantwere observed underphase contrastmicroscope. Maximumovule enumerated in B.napus (28-30) whileminimum in Crambe

Participatory seed production involving public research institutes/govt. farms and private stakeholders on mutually beneficial termsfor knowledge, dissemination of technology, human resourcedevelopment and overall increase in production of mustard atfarmer’s field has been recently launched programme of DRMR.Breeder/genetically pure seed is supplied by the Directorate, whereas, all the other inputs for quality seed production are borneby the farmer (s). A committee of experts regularly monitors theprogress of the seed production field and also recommends thefinal procurement. Procurement of whole seed material is done at10% higher rate than the highest price of mustard seed in the localmarket during the month of April and May. The model has manifoldadvantages to the farmers as well as to the Directorate. During2009-10, DRMR procured 77.06 q seed of mustard variety NRCDR-02 from a farmer of Bharatpur district and 22.10 q TL seed ofRohini from Madhuri kund farm of Veterinary University, Mathura.Buoyed by the success of this programme, DRMR decided toexpand it further.

16 Sarson News January - June 2010

FROM DIRECTOR’S DESK

As per the future projection, the per capita consumption ofvegetable oil is expected toreach 14.57 kg/person/annumin 2015 and would furtherincrease to 16.38 kg/person/annum by 2020, which called

for intensified research efforts to enhance rapeseed-mustard production vertically as well as horizontally.Complex existing and emerging disease and pest scenariois the foremost challenge. Soil deficiency for nutrientsand abiotic stresses particularly the climate change (hightemperature, drought, etc.) pose another challenge.Large cultivation under resource constrained conditions, imbalance fertilizer use, poor plant protection measures, inadequate moisture conservation techniques and weedsare the major impediments in the sustainable productionof the crop. Further, insufficient networking amongvarious stakeholders and multiplicities in technologydissemination, real term stagnation in support price incomparison to competing wheat crop are also the issuesto be suitably address to enhance rapeseed-mustardproduction.

On the research front, to overcome the yield barriers,pre-breeding programme needs to be furtherstrengthened to develop trait specific gene pool with activepublic-private-partnership. The programme of varietalimprovement will also have to include the restructuringof plant type. For the development of hybrid in Indianmustard, diverse sources of CMS system needs to beutilized with enhanced level of heterosis. The other aspectsof hybrid programme like improvement of parental linesfor high temperature tolerance and white rust resistance, introgression of oil and seed meal quality traits in parentallines and conversion of restorer lines through marker aidedselection needs attention. To augment the success of

breeding programmes, effective crop resourcemanagement programmes are very essential. Theimportant aspects of resource management programmeswill include production technologies for hybrids, non-traditional areas and rice fallows, development ofresource conservation methods and enhancing input useefficiency.

To sustain the present level of yield, studies on pathogenicvariability of major pathogens like Alternaria brassiceaeand Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, host-pathogen interactionand induced resistance and development of locationspecific bio-intensive IPM modules for major insect pestsand diseases for different production systems would beimportant. To deal with the effect of climate change onthe crop scenario,

studies on epidemiology of major

diseases/ insect-pests, including development offorecasting models for emergence, reemergence andpossible disappearance of major pests and diseases areimportant. Networking with state development personnel,NGOs and processing industries and linking communitybased organizations (SHGs, farmer clubs, etc.) with farmadvisory services, farmer participatory technologygeneration and assessment, incorporation of validatedindigenous technical knowledge (ITK) in the package ofpractices are the other aspects of the strategies to enhanceproduction with the existing technologies. Use ofinformation technology based decision support systemslike disease and insect-pest management software forfarmers, etc would also be effective for technologytransfer.

Human resource development in frontier areas of researchand forging greater linkages with institutions of excellencein India and abroad would also play an important role inenhancing rapeseed-mustard production in the yearsahead.

Contributions are invited for Jul-Dec 2010 issue. The Sarson News intends to highlight only the latest and mostsalient research findings, developments, achievements related to rapeseed-mustard. Full paper, short note, etc.

will not be entertained. Suggestions to improve the Newsletter are welcome.
