THE PROMISES OF GOD

Lesson 1

THE PROMISES OF GOD

5

INTRODUCTION: There are more than 7,000 precise, precious promises in the Bible. These were made by God to man. They reach every part of the human life. There are 31,173 verses in the total Bible: 23,214 in the Old Testament 7,959 in the New Testament The promises of God are very clearly one of the most important subjects of the Bible. Yet if you check the bookshelves and libraries, it is a subject somewhat neglected. 1. THE PROMISES OF GOD ARE CONDITIONAL

A. If you serve me—I will bless you (Psalm 119:2). B. If you tithe—I will open the windows of heaven (Malachi 3:10).

Psalm 50:5, Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.

C. The covenant with God was made by sacrifice.

Galatians 3:21, Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

Men oftentimes do not receive the promises of God because they do not ACT upon them. They believe these promises are true, but do not initiate their fulfillment.

2. A PROMISE YOU CAN READ FORWARD OR BACKWARD

Hebrews 13:5, Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

The Promises of God Lesson 1

3. WITH EVERY DEMAND OF GOD THERE IS A PROMISE

A. Gold lies buried very deeply. It makes a demand on those who desire it. B. Diamonds, rare and beautiful, are hidden in darkness but are rewarding in the

light. C. Demand of praise

Psalm 43:5, Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

D. Demand of forgiveness

Matthew 6:15, For if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

E. Demand of sharing

Matthew 19:21, Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

F. Demand of service

Colossians 3:24, Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

G. Demand of giving

Luke 6:38, Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

H. Demand of love

I Corinthian 2:9, But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

THE SURETY OF THE PROMISES

READING: II Corinthians 1:20, For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. This tells us that if God promises to do something, He will do it. Lesson 5

GOD’S PROMISES CAUSED MEN AND WOMEN TO BECOME FAMOUS

15

READING: Genesis 12:1-3, Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: v. 2, And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: v. 3, And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. INTRODUCTION: In this lesson, we wrestle with the imponderables. Can God’s promises make a man great, and are they real? God made special promises to persons who dared to believe and to act on His Word. Napoleon, emperor of France, was reviewing his troops near Paris when his horse became unruly. The emperor dropped the reins while giving command and the spirited animal bounded away. Napoleon was in danger of being hurled to the ground. A young private standing in line, leaped forward, seized the bridle of the horse, and saved his general from a fall. The emperor, looking at him, abruptly said, “Thank you captain. Of what regiment? Of my guards?” Napoleon galloped away. The private laid down his musket, and walked toward a group of officers. One of them rebuked him for breaking rank. The private responded, “I’m a captain of the royal guards.” The officer said, “You are insane, who told you this?” The soldier pointed at the emperor, “He said it, sir.” The officer said, “I beg your pardon captain, I was not aware of your promotion.” You see, when the emperor said it, it did not matter how he looked or whether he had on the right uniform. It only mattered that he said it! When God says it, believe it! Act!

God’s Promises Caused Men and Women to Become Famous Lesson 5

his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

THE PROMISES OF GOD

Lesson 14

THE PROMISES OF GOD FOR THE HOME

47

READING:

Matthew 7:24-25, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: v. 25, And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. INTRODUCTION:

God loves the home. It is high on His list of blessing. He has made promises precisely for the home.

The rock is God’s Word, which are His promises. When a man feeds on the promises of God daily: A. He will never talk about how poor he is.

B. He will talk about a new power.

C. He will talk about a new anointing.

D. He will sing a new song.

America’s homes need this security. 1. THE PROMISES OF GOD FOR THE HOME

A. Proverbs 12:7, The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the

righteous shall stand. B. God’s promises deal very strongly with love, marriage, home and parent-hood. C. In this modern day of disastrous home life, the Bible gives guidance with

numerous promises related to the right kind of love and marriage.

The Promises of God for the Home Lesson 14

48

D. America has never had it so good materially. However, America has never had it so bad morally and spiritually. We need to study the promises of God and rediscover life.

2. THE FIRST COMMANDMENT WITH A PROMISE

A. Exodus 20:12, Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long

upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

This makes a strong home with honor and respect. B. Proverbs 22:6, Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he

will not depart from it.

This is a faithful promise that God is obligated to fulfill.

3. CONSIDER OTHERS IN THE HOME

Ephesians 6:4, And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

4. THE PROMISES FOR THE HOUSE AND BUSINESS

Deuteronomy 7:13, And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

5. PROMISES TO BLESS FUTURE GENERATIONS

A. Psalm 102:28, The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall

be established before thee.

B. Isaiah 44:3, For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.

6. A PROMISE TO THE JUST

A. Proverbs 20:7, The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed

after him.

B. Jeremiah 49:11, Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.

The Promises of God for the Home Lesson 14

49

7. A PROMISE OF PROVISION

Psalm 37:25, I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

8. UNITY OF FAMILY

A. It was good for Adam intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually not to

be alone, but to have a family and a home.

Genesis 2:18, And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

B. Ephesians 5:31, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and

shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. C. Malachi 4:6, And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the

heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

PROMISES FOR ENDURANCE

51

READING: Hebrews 11:27, By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. INTRODUCTION Endurance is not an easy subject in our world of quitters. Endurance is happiness. James 5:11, Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. 1. ENDURANCE FOR LIFE

A. Mark 13:13, And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall

endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

It is not who begins the Christian walk, but the one who finishes that counts with God. In running a race, it’s the finish line that counts.

B. I Corinthians 9:24, Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth

the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

2. GOD GIVES POWER TO ENDURE

Psalm 37:25, I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

3. END OF THE UPRIGHT LIFE

Psalm 37:37, Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

Promises for Endurance Lesson 15

4. SUFFICIENT OIL WAS PROVIDED

The five wise virgins in Matthew 25:7-9 had enough oil until the bridegroom came. v. 7, Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. v. 8, And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. v. 9, But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

5. BE FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH

The overcomer of the Book of Revelation is one who is faithful to death.

Revelation 2:10, Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

6. GOD ENDURES MAN

Romans 9:22, What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction.

7. CHRISTIANS CAN BE OVERCOMERS

We can endure and overcome the temptations of the enemy.

A. James 1:12, Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

B. Luke 10:19, Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

8. ENDURING BRINGS RENEWED STRENGTH AND VICTORY

A. Isaiah 40:31, But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall

mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

B. Daniel 11:32, . . .but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

PROMISES FOR THE AFFLICTED

53

READING:

Psalm 34:19, Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. INTRODUCTION:

Job said that what he had feared came upon him. There are human afflictions. We do not deny this. The question is, what do we do about them? How we handle them is so very important. 1. THERE IS A WAY OUT OF AFFLICTION

Acts 7:9-10, And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, v. 10, And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

2. THERE IS STRENGTH FOR THE AFFLICTED

II Corinthians 12:9, And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

3. TEACHING ABOUT AFFLICTION

The older Apostle Paul encouraged the younger disciple Timothy.

II Timothy 4:5, But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Promises for the Afflicted Lesson 16

54

4. HUMAN AFFLICTIONS ARE LIGHT AND SHORT

II Corinthians 4:17, For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

5. JESUS, OUR EXAMPLE FOR LIFE

Jesus despised the shame and endured the cross for the knowledge of the resurrection.

Hebrews 12:2, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

6. BE AN OVERCOMER IN AFFLICTION

The Christian is not overcome by affliction, but an overcomer in affliction.

A. II corinthians 4:8-10, We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are

perplexed, but not in despair; v. 9, Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; v. 10, Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the

life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. B. Romans 12:21, Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

GOD’S PROMISES RELATED TO EVERLASTING LIFE

55

READING:

Romans 6:22, But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. INTRODUCTION:

The deepest desire of every human is to experience:

1) Everlasting life 2) To live continuously 3) To live perpetually 4) To be healthy 5) To be happy

On this earth, man is denied the fulness of these desires. 1. HUMAN DEATH IS AN APPOINTMENT

Hebrews 9:27, And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.

2. HUMAN DEATH IS LIMITED

Human life is divinely limited to an average of three score and ten years (60 + 10=70). Psalm 90:10, The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

God’s Promises Related to Everlasting Life Lesson 17

57

9. THE DOOR INTO EVERLASTING LIFE

I Corinthians 15:51-58, Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, v. 52, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. v. 53, For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. v. 54, So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. v. 55, O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? v. 56, The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. v. 57, But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. v. 58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

10. KNOWLEDGE AND EVERLASTING LIFE

I Corinthians 13:9-12, For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. v. 10, But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. v. 11, When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. v. 12, For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

11. EVERLASTING LIFE THE GRAND FULFILLMENT OF REST FOR BELIEVERS

C. John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that

whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

13. WHO RECEIVES EVERLASTING LIFE?

Everlasting life is reserved for those who hear and believe. John 5:24, . . .He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life. . .

14. EVERLASTING LIFE IS A HARVEST FROM SEED-SOWING

Galatians 6:8, For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

HOW TO GET PROMISES FULFILLED

65

READING: Hebrews 6:12, That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. INTRODUCTION: FAITH believes that God is and that He is the Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). PATIENCE waits calmly without murmuring or doubting. FAITH says, “I have it,” and PATIENCE waits for it. FAITH is the “yea” of the promise and PATIENCE brings the “amen” of the promise. 1. HOW TO GET A PROMISE FULFILLED

A. Romans 4:20, He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but

was strong in faith, giving glory to God. B. Galatians 4:23, But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but

he of the freewoman was by promise. C. Hebrews 11:33, Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness,

obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions. D. Isaiah 44:3, For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the

dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.

How to Get Promises Fulfilled Lesson 20

GOD MADE PERSONAL PROMISES TO ME

77

READING:

1) Isaiah 41:10-11 4) Revelation 19:6 2) Luke 4:18 5) Jeremiah 33:9 3) John 15:16 6) Psalm 71:18

INTRODUCTION:

I desire that you become “Promise Conscious” from God’s Word.

In every great crisis of my life, the promises of the Word of God have directed me.

I have never tried to use the Bible in any magic way, seeking to try to get God to talk to me, but God has always spoken to me through and by His Word.

When I lay dying with tuberculosis, and the medical doctor said I had only two hours to live, God spoke to my heart, healing my body and saving my soul. Three weeks from that fateful night, I went out to preach.

My heavenly Father had called me to preach, but my earthly father unbelievingly pointed a warning finger at me and said, “You’ll starve to death!” 1. THE FIRST TIME GOD SPOKE

In this bitter conflict, torment and fear, God spoke to me and told me to read Isaiah 41:10-11.

v. 10, Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. v. 11, Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.

God Made Personal Promises to Me Lesson 25

78

It is impossible to describe the blending of the human and divine in that spiritually illuminating and holy invigorating moment as I read these words spoken through the prophet Isaiah which so dramatically served my personal situation. It was as if it had been written just for me. A. Fear thou not; for I am with thee. . . B. Be not dismayed; for I am thy God. . . C. I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the

right hand of my righteousness. D. Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and

confounded: they shall be as nothing. . . E. They that strive with thee shall perish. God promised to fight all my battles for me. That day I packed my suitcase and departed from my father’s house, filled with love, joy and faith that came to me from hearing the Word of God. It was His promise that sent me forth.

2. THE MOMENT OF DISAPPOINTMENT

Luke 4:18, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the borkenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. After I had preached for over a year, I overheard a conversation in which a close relative of mine said, after hearing me preach, “Lester would not make a preacher in a thousand years.” My soul was crushed. I was hurt deep in my heart. I went to God weeping. The voice of God spoke to me through His Word. No human could ever estimate the sensation which moved through my being as I read this message direct from the Word of God.

A. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me . . . B. Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor . . . C. To heal the brokenhearted . . .

God Made Personal Promises to Me Lesson 25

79

D. To preach deliverance to the captives . . . E. Recovering of sight to the blind . . . F. To set at liberty them that are bruised.

This set the path and pattern for my ministry for the glory of God. I knew that flesh and blood had not revealed this to me, but my Father who was in heaven.

3. THE WORLD AND $12.00

When I was 20 years old, I left America to minister to the nations of the world. No one knew of my financial situation, but I had no one backing my missionary journey. I just felt I had to go. As I began to weep before the Lord, He spoke to my heart that I should read John 15:16. Eagerly I turned to my Bible and read: A. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you. . . B. Go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain. . . C. Whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. What a personal guarantee for all of my needs. It was a personal check already signed and I could write in the amount. All through these years, God has fulfilled this total promise to me in every detail. Jeremiah 1:12, Then said the LORD unto me. . .I will hasten my word to perform it.

4. CAPTURED BY BANDITS IN TIBET

A. When traveling through the mountains of Southwest China and Tibet, three hungry, angry, and dirty men accosted our party of seventeen. They pointed old-fashioned muskets at us and commanded us to stop. They were interested in the food and supplies we carried with us and were angry enough to kill us to get them. I questioned God in my spirit, “Did you send me here to die at the hands of these communists?”

Again the Spirit of the Lord spoke, “Read Revelation 19:6.” I took the New Testament out of my pocket, anxious for this word from the Lord.

God Made Personal Promises to Me Lesson 25

80

v. 6, and I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

In that moment of terror, the Spirit of the Lord was shouting with a voice of many waters, of a great multitude, a voice of mighty thunderings, the Lord God omnipotent reigneth! God was reigning over my situation. He was in control!

B. God reigns over your situation. He is reigning now. He shouts His authority with a voice of many thunderings right now—the Lord thy God omnipotent reigns!

I was filled with divine strength. I turned and faced the man with his gun and smiled. Through our interpreter, I asked if he wished food. We gave them food and money, and they disappeared in the bush. We were delivered. Truly, the Lord God omnipotent reigneth!

5. MY PRESENT HEADQUARTERS

The verse that became the guideline for me to plant our base in South Bend for the fantastic ministry God was to raise up in America for Christian television was Jeremiah 33:9, And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them. . .

Once again, God confirmed to me that this base would be the launching pad to all nations of the earth, this time to continue the fulfillment of Luke 4:18, . . .to preach the gospel to the poor. . .to preach deliverance to the captives. . .and this time through television—around the world.

And the last part of the verse is to be fulfilled just as the first part has been: ...and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.

I know that what God ordains, God causes to prosper. The nations of the world shall see it and know that it is God who is doing it.

6. THE FINAL CHAPTER

I asked God to show me my end, and the ministry I must fulfill. As I prayed, it seemed like the Spirit entered my hotel room. The power of God came upon me, and the Spirit of the Lord spoke to my heart, “You will find the answer in Psalm 71:18.” I had no idea what was in that verse.

Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.

God Made Personal Promises to Me Lesson 25

81

God was promising me that the rest of my generation would see me continuing in the ministry He had given to me, but even when I was old and greyheaded, I would minister the strength of my youth, until the gospel of Luke 4:18 had been preached to this generation and I would show God’s power to the young men coming after me who would continue the ministry. I was to show them how God would bless them as He blessed Moses, and Elijah, and David, and all those who had gone before.

Now I am living in this part of God’s promises to me. I have seen every promise God has made to me come to pass word for word. His Word accomplishes that which He pleases and prospers in the thing whereto He sent it.

A. Isaiah 55:11, So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not

return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

B. John 10:10, . . .I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it

more abundantly. Let the promises of God take effect in your life so that you may have life and have it more abundantly.

Genesis 3:22-24, And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

v. 23, Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

v. 24, So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims. and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

B. We will drink of the water of life.

1) Revelation 22:17, And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

2) Jesus offered living waters.

John 4:10, 14, . . .he would have given thee living water. v. 14, But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall

never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. v. 3, And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive

you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
