How To SelectProper coupler selection is important because of the variety of media for which they are used.

Four basic factors should be considered to assure proper selection:

Type – Operation – Flow – Media

TypeAll couplers consist of two basic components – a socket and a plug.

The type of coupler varies by the valving arrangements in these two components.

OperationOperation refers to the action required to connect and disconnect a coupler.

Operation is a function of sockets only and does not vary for plugs.

Manual sockets require manualretraction of the sleeve to both connect and disconnectthe plug.

Automatic

Automatic sockets accept theplug by simple insertion into thesocket and do not require retrac-tion of the sleeve to connect.

Safety Coupler

Safety sockets are a variation ofautomatic operation. The socketaccepts the plug by insertion. Thesleeve is moved straight forward tolock and turn on the air. The sleeveis moved back by rotating first tothe left and then to the right. Thisshuts off the supply line, exhauststhe downstream line, and thenreleases the plug.

Manual

In a “One Way Shut-Off,” only the sock-et has valving to shut off the flowwhen disconnected; it is, therefore,installed on the pressure side of theline. The plug has no valving andexhausts the downstream line at dis-connect.

Two Way Shut-Off

The “Two Way Shut-Off” provides valving in both the socket and theplug, thereby shutting off flow at bothof the disconnected ends. Originallydeveloped for hydraulic lines, they aresuitable for many other mediabecause of the variety of metals andseal compounds offered.

Straight-Thru

“Straight-Thru” couplers, as thename implies, do not have valvingin either the socket or the plug.Therefore, both ends of the line areexhausted at disconnect.

FEATURES• Safe, Easy to Use. When disconnecting, all downstream

air is bled off automatically. The hazard of flying orsnaking air hoses is totally eliminated. Connecting thecoupling is easier since the action does not requireengagement under full line pressure.

• Washerless. The Safety Vent socket uses “O-rings”instead of washers for sealing the mating plug. The cou-pling does not leak, coupling life is greatly extendedand maintenance costs are drastically reduced.

• More Efficient. By eliminating the need for restrictivepoppet valves the design provides up to 30% greaterair flow compared to a standard coupling. Air toolsoperate more efficiently because of the reduced pres-sure drop across the coupling.
