BIOLOGY

Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to the management of biological

information. Computers are used to gather, store, analyze and integrate biological and

genetic information which can then be applied to gene-based drug discovery and

development.

Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering is a discipline that advances knowledge in

engineering, biology, and medicine -- and improves human health through cross-disciplinary

Page 4: DPS International (Saket) Holiday Homework 2016-17 CLASS IX …dpsi.ac.in/DPSInternational/UserSpace/UserName/sktadmin... · 2016-05-14 · DPS International (Saket) Holiday Homework

activities that integrate the engineering sciences with the biomedical sciences and clinical

practice.

Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or

"any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives

thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use"

Select ANY ONE out of the above three and make a project to highlight its benefit in

improving human health. You may include pictures, diagrams, model, videos or any other

visual tool to make it look interesting. A written or typed explanation must be submitted on 1st

July along with your model.

EXAMPLES: MRI, CT SCAN, ECG MACHINE, LASER, LAPROSCOPES, ULTRASOUND,

X RAY MACHINE, DIALYSIS MACHINE, VENTILATORS ETC

CHEMISTRY

Any one of the following:

1.Make 3D model presentation of different types of transport that can be used in space, give

your model a specific name and write information about the type of fuel that you can use and

why the chosen fuel is important.

2. Prepare a chemistry experiment that is possible in outer space giving information about

the environment suitable for it with proper explanation through chart or 3D structure.

3. Prepare a project on how to check air pollution/air quality on daily basis to the nearby

surrounding using simple chemistry experiments.

(Research the topic well before starting and also highlight its usefulness in the field of

chemistry)

BUSINESS STUDIES

Vertical integration describes when a company purchases or starts a company that it either

buys from or sells to and integrates this new business into its own. Forward integration

means it is integrating businesses toward the end customer; backward integration means it

is integrating in the direction away from the customer. Backward vertical integration can be a

part of a company's strategy due to the competitive benefits it provide.

A Simple, Hypothetical Example

A simple example of backward vertical integration strategy is an ice cream company that

buys a dairy farm. The company requires milk to make ice cream and either can buy milk

from a dairy farm or other milk supplier or could own the dairy farm itself. This ensures that it

will have a steady supply of milk at its disposal and that it will pay a reasonable price. This

can protect the ice cream maker in the event that there are several other buyers vying for the

same milk supply.

TASK (Expected time to be spent 4 hrs)

Find an example of two business which have grown by, one forward integration and

the other by vertical integration.

Explain how they have integrated and what are it benefits to the business

Explain any problems they faced in the process of integration and how did they

overcome the same.

Present the same in a form of PPT (10 -15 slides)

Make the ppt interesting with adding interviews or video clips etc.

You would be asked to present the same in the class.

ACCOUNTING

Case Study I

Dr. Paula Loniak of Athens, Georgia, has worked with animals for more than 25 years. She has been a racehorse groom, a boarding kennel manager, a veterinary technician, and a veterinarian.

Dr. Loniak started a sole proprietorship called Vet-to-Pet, a house call practice for dogs and cats. Dr. Loniak visits pets in

their homes to provide basic veterinary services. She treats illnesses such as skin problems, allergies, ear and eye irritations, minor wounds, and abscesses. Vaccinations and lab screening tests are also administered. Dr. Loniak considers her services to be a supplement to the care given by other veterinarians, and is intended for those who have a hard time getting their pets to a clinic.

Dr. Loniak works independently and uses a van to make her house calls. She charges an initial fee, which covers her expenses traveling to the patient’s home. This fee varies depending on the distance Dr. Loniak must travel. She also charges for the exam and any treatment, lab work, or medication required. She offers a sliding scale (lower, variable fees) for senior citizens on fixed incomes. She serves individuals with mobility limitations and works with seeing-eye and assistant/working dogs.

Accounting Applications:

Instructions: Now that you have reviewed the case study above, answer the following questions on your own.

MATHEMATICS

HOMEWORK CONSISTS OF 2 COMPONENTS : A and B

****Both are compuslory******

COMPONENT A:

Fear Of Numbers Mathematics instils fears in some people, especially children. Could sutras help deal with this fear? The fear,‘I can’t do it, I don’t know how to do it, I’m stuck,’ is largely because of some gap. Something hasn’t been drawn out of the child,” says Glover, who was drawn to vedic maths because of its universality and expression of unity. Sometimes, while teaching vedic maths, Glover finds it difficult to draw people out of their comfort zones. He quotes the Shankaracharya who said in the book that one has to be open-minded, truth-seeking and humble. For Glover, mathematics may not be transcendental, but the meaning of the sutras reminds him of something that is transcendental.“They point to something that is much deeper,” he adds.

Vedic maths points to psychological processes that take place while solving mathematical problems, UK-based vedic maths expert JAMES GLOVER says. Vedic mathematics is not a bunch of mathematical tricks,” says James Glover, president of the UK-based Institute for the Advancement of Vedic Mathematics.. “Vedic mathematics helps make calculations and algebraic manipulations much faster, more efficiently —

It enhances strategy skills in problem-solving, which is a highly sought after characteristic in

the modern world of commerce, engineering and computing.

Use these holidays effectively to not only rid yourselves of ignorance and fear of

Mathematics but also strengthen your mathematical skills by learning and practicing vedic

maths.

The vedas are ancient texts and the word ‘veda’ also means knowledge that can be intuited

and is applicable in spiritual, physical and mental realms.

“You can’t claim vedas on any racial, geographical and religious grounds”.Everyone

irrespective of caste, creed, religion, nationality age can practice vedic maths .

.

Objective:

To lead you into unique, enjoyable and very quick methods of working with numbers and

banish any fear of maths and numbers.

Methodology:

The word ‘Vedic’ is derived from the word “veda’ which means the store-house of all

knowledge. Vedic mathematics is mainly based on 16 Sutras (or aphorisms) dealing with

various branches of mathematics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry etc.

Use the websites mentioned above or others to translate, understand, practice and apply

any 4 of Number 1 – 8 and any 4 of number 9 -16.

VEDIC SUTRAS

There are some online learning sites as well and you can enrol for them too.

You could also buy the book “The Curious Hats of Magical Maths” byJames Glover

Do not just copy from the source but learn the sutra and then apply to some problems to

check for proficiency.

Artifact:

At the end of your study , create a ppt / memoir where in you have shown your

understanding of each of the sutras by solving a math problem related to syllabus . Start

from the basics and proceed to the advanced form.

Assessment : You will be assessed on

Ppt/ memoir creativity: 5M

Skill proficiency: 5M

(A test to assess understanding and proficiency will be administered once the school

reopens)These will be included in your weekly assessment 2 .

COMPONENT B:

Instructions:

Do all these questions in separate notebook.

Solve at least 5 questions every day . This will be like a revision for your half yearly

exams too.
