If you have not yet guessed, all the hoopla is for the filming of the se- ries trailer ‘Dark Moments’ which will be airing on both YouTube and iLoops as of September 1, 2012. Dark Moments is a modern suspense thriller which centers on a reporter who finds himself working for a small newspaper in Kamloops as a means to get away from the high profile work he had been covering in his recent past. As he begins to set- tle into his new position, the mysterious disappear - ance of a local teenager throws him back into the pursuit of another high profile story. “This is probably the biggest and most exciting thing that has ever been filmed in Kamloops or area,” says Shayne. “I am very excited about this project. It is Magnum PI meets the Twilight Zone. We will be filming entire- ly in the Kamloops area using both the natural features and urban land- scape. This trailer will be used as a springboard to launch the entire series of Dark Moments which is expected to be five year project with the filming of 60 tantalizing episodes.” Keep your eyes peeled for the series hero, reporter Jason Averil Ed- wards who everyone calls Jae! Played in the trailer by local actor Mar- shall Munson, Jae and the crew will be out and about Downtown on July 7 and elsewhere throughout the city right thru until July 29 getting all the shots they need for the trailer. The Kamloops Chapter of the BC Sustainable Energy Association (bCsea) wants, once and for all, to set the record straight when it comes to clotheslines and city bylaws. “ever since our clothesline giveaway started with the Solar Laundry Project we’ve found that there’s still a bit of confu-sion on this subject, so we thought we would ask the Mayor to clear up any misperceptions”, said Cheryl Kabloona, chair of the Kamloops Chapter.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar was unequivocal on the topic. “The City has no clothesline ban. Unless you live in a strata or a place where a devel-oper enforces a clothesline prohibition, you’re free to use one. Actually, we encourage people to use clotheslines because it’s a way to reduce energy consumption. The Sustainable Kamloops Plan calls for a 20 percent reduc-tion in community energy use (compared to 2010), so this is one way we can move that goal forward.”

Kabloona explains why the Kamloops chapter initiated the Solar Laundry Project. “Currently, clothes dryers account for roughly six percent of all electricity use province-wide. Using a clothesline is a simple way to conserve energy. Our sponsors, the Kamloops Home Hardware Building Centre and bC hydro power smart, were eager to get on board with this because it’s something that almost everyone can do, especially in our sunny Kamloops climate. Of course, more sunshine would be nice right about now, wouldn’t it?”

The Solar Laundry Project encourages the public to “put a little sunshine in your shorts” by rethinking their laundry drying habits. The main initia-tive of the project is a giveaway of 12 clotheslines every week for the next 6 weeks, until July 14 (each is an $85 value). Registration is done online at www.bcsea.org/kamloops and only has to be done once, since all registra-tions remain active until they are chosen as winners.

You can hang your clothes

Sandbag pick up next weekwith declining river levels, the

Kamloops Emergency Operations Centre is beginning demobilization of flood protection measures. First priority is unsealing catch basins in low-lying areas. removal of the gabion flood baskets is expected within the next two weeks.

beginning the week of July 9, the City is offering sandbag pick up for residents. Similar to garbage collection, residents must place the sandbags in the same curb-side location by 7:00 a.m. where they would typically place their garbage containers. sandbags will be picked up the business day fol-

lowing regular scheduled garbage collection.

Alternatively, residents may drop sandbags off at the Mission Flats or barnhartvale landfills at no charge. where sandbags have not been picked up after five business days, residents are asked to call public Works at 250-828-3461 and pro-vide their address so that arrange-ments can be made for pick up.

residents are still reminded to take care along riverfront areas due to the fast moving current. Be careful in all areas adjacent to riverbanks due to swift water and erosion risks.

KAG offers interactive workshopThe Kamloops Art Gallery will

host an interactive drawing and Storytelling Workshop on July 7, 1:00 to 3:00 pm with local artist Emily Hope, whose exhibition The Wild Man Appreciation Society is on view in the Cube until August 25.

Join Hope to create drawings and telling stories about the wild men you’ve seen or imagined and post your drawing or story on the bMo Open Gallery, which will be open to the public as an interactive space from July 7 to August 18. In addition to the exhibition, Hope has collabo-rated with local artists to create draw-

ings of the wild man on the exterior windows of the gallery.

during her research for this exhi-bition, artist Emily Hope gathered

wild man anecdotes and drawings; learning and sharing the experienc-es of those who have encountered evidence of the illusive wild man.

TickleD pink

During the week of June 23 to 30, businesses have been having pink ribbons painted on their windows in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Pictured here is the CIBC branch downtown covered in pink ribbons. Some of the other businesses who have been “pinked” include Scoopz Ice Cream, Expedia Cruise Ship Center and Nature’s Face and Body.

Back Alley Project earns Best in the West Awardit has been an exciting year already

for the Cap team. events such as the Spring Festival and the annual KCBIA Golf Tournament have taken place and we are now busy preparing for BC’s Biggest Sidewalk Sale the KCBIA’s Downtown Merchants Market. in addition to these very exciting events, the Cap Team also works on a variety of on-going projects. One of the main projects that the team has been working on for the last few years is the Downtown Back Alley Project.

This project focuses on making the alley-ways an appealing place to be in. Through follow-ing CpTed guidelines, (Crime prevention through environmental design), we can make the alleyways a safer place to be. This includes eliminating any unneces-sary and excess amount of dumpsters. By getting busi-nesses to share we can contribute to effectively opening

up the alleyways, eliminating hiding spots and one of the most popular ways to gain access to rooftops. There have even been few instances where dumpsters have been lit on fire causing harm and danger to the people and businesses within the surrounding area.

Since 2008 there has been much accom-plishment in reaching our main goals. Last year we even won a best in the west award for Public and Private Spaces: Clean and beautiful for all of our work in the back alleys. This year our main focus for the back alley project is the dumpsters behind the 200

and 300 blocks of Victoria st; increasing lighting, remov-ing dumpsters and opening the alleys up. Increasing the walkability and safety of our downtown is all of our responsibilities. Only with the help of the business and business owners alike can we make our alleyways a safe and welcoming place to be in.

a canadian girl’s journey to the Reebok crossFit Games

Journey 2011…Last March was quite the mile-

stone for me, I turned 50, was in year two of running my own business as co-owner of natural Strength CrossFit in Kamloops, bC. i was encouraged to register myself to compete as a “masters” in the 2011 CrossFit Open fitness competition so that’s exactly what i did. Thanks to sean white, my coach, partner in business and in life who believed in me, kept tell-ing me that i had a great chance at going to the reebok CrossFit games and that we should start planning for the trip.

Journey 2012…in March of this year i regis-

tered once again to compete in the reebok CrossFit worLd Open Competition. There were over 500 ladies in my age cate-gory alone (50-54). After the five weeks of competition whereby we had to do one workout a week and then register our results on-line, I finished in 17th place out of all of the ladies in my age category. I am the only 50+ female Canadian going to La this year. The top 20 who qualify get to move onto the reebok CrossFit world games in La, California in July. There is no fee to enter the reebok CrossFit games; you do however have to get there on your own. Luckily we have some great commu-nity support, amazing clients and family and friends who help sean and i get there. Fundraising has already started with “limited edition” t-shirt sales which were designed by our friends at Crock of Shirt. $10 from each sale will go directly to getting us to La.

on June 9, we held a fundraising dinner at on the rocks pub once again. Like last year we raised enough money to cover all travel and hotel expenses.

Currently I am proud to share that I have cleaned and jerked 158lbs, I can bench press my body weight and more, and can squat 192lbs. These are huge accomplishments for me of which I am proud of. I feel stronger this year, faster and have worked hard at transition-ing from one exercise to the other during a workout without huge breaks.

As for the 2012 CrossFit games, i am both nervous and excited, the CrossFit jitters I guess you could say but i feel prepared. July 11 is when we take off to compete July 13, 14 and hopefully make it to the 15th!

one heck of a ride!Final numbers are in from this year’s Bike To Work

Week event from May 28 to June 3, and the coordina-tors are overjoyed. “What a great week. The number of teams was up 48 percent over last year and the number of riders was up 75 percent! Way to go everyone!” said James Gordon, one of the coordinators. “We’re delighted,” said Marcia dick, the other coordinator. “We ended up with 527 riders and 108 teams—which surpassed our goal of 100 teams. We had over 40 spon-sors who really showed amazing support with tons of great prizes, cash and in-kind donations. And we really lucked out with the weather! it was really a win-win-win all around.”

gordon and dick credit the solid backing from the City of Kamloops, the Province of BC, and a dedicated, hard-working and fun-loving volunteer committee for putting on such a great event. They are also very grate-ful to all of the team-leaders who organized their teams and logged all of the kilometers their teammates rode.

“It’s really about the riders, though” said Gordon. “It’s about deciding to get on your bike and ride to work. and once you do, then you realize how good it feels; and it’s great for the environment too. Good for your health and the planet’s health. The trick now is to keep going all summer. Keep on riding everyone!”

The Bike To Work Week Kamloops website, Facebook site and Twitter account all have more wrap-up infor-mation and images.

BTWW is a province-wide event supported by the City of Kamloops and the Province of BC. Kamloops is one of over 20 BC communities par-

(L-R) James Gordon, Matt Davis, Marcia Dick, Colleen Lepik and Trevor Dinn. The winner of the “Most Elevation”, “Longest Distance” and “Best Story” prizes went to Matt Davis of New Gold, who rode from Downtown to New Gold every day during the week (160 km and 2250 m) and wrote a story about it. Way to go, Matt and everyone that participated!
