NOTICES

In 2015 we are celebrating the 500th anniversary of thecompletion of the stonework of the Chapel. One of theways we are commemorating this in Chapel itself is byoffering two series of special sermons. In the first we will focus on the legacy and message todayof a number of ‘King’s Divines’. These are members ofthe College who have made an exceptional and distinctive

contribution to Christian theology, spirituality or worship. This termwill see sermons on Orlando Gibbons, by the Chaplain, and Eric Milner-White, by the Dean.In the second series we focus on one of the four fundamental objectives ofthe College as defined in the Statutes, ‘Education’, ‘Religion’, ‘Learning’and ‘Research’. For some of these, we are inviting people from institutionswith which we have deep historic connections to help us. This term wehave three such sermons. Tony Little, the Headmaster of Eton will address‘Education’, Erica Longfellow, Dean of Divinity at New College Oxfordwill address ‘Religion’ and Lord Williams, Master of Magdalene Collegeand former Archbishop of Canterbury will address ‘Research’ in theSermon Before the University.Full details of both sermon series are given at the back of this booklet.

ORGAN RECITALS

[ 3 ]

Page 4: Download the services booklet

There is an immediate exception in that the first recital of term willbegin at 7.00 p.m. It is being given by former organ scholar DavidBriggs (KC 1981), who will be playing his own arrangement for organ ofMahler’s Resurrection Symphony. This occasion will also mark the endof this year’s Easter Festival. In our continuing series of recitals by former organ scholars (as part of the500th celebrations), Ian Hare (KC 1968) plays on 9 May, and on 6 JuneFrancis Grier (KC 1973) is joined by his daughters and a former chorister,Andrew Marriner, in a performance of Messiaen’s Quartet for the Endof Time. The Choir will earlier sing Francis’s Magnificat at Evensong.

MUSIC

On Sunday 14 June the second of six new anthems commissioned throughthe generosity of the late Michael Boswell (KC 1959), and others whomade donations in memory of Michael, will receive its first performanceat evensong. Written by Robin Holloway (KC 1961), it is entitled Thouart There and is dedicated to John Drury, former Dean of King’s. At theSung Eucharist in the morning of that day, the Choir will be joined bypupils of Jeremy West from The Royal Welsh College of Music & Dramain Lassus Missa “Bell’ amfitrit’ altera”. The players will also contributeinstrumental items. Jeremy’s own ensemble, His Majestys Sagbutts &Cornetts, joins the Choir for a concert on Friday 19 June. The Cathedral Organists’ Association, meeting in conference at theCollege, attends evensong on 12 and 13 May. On both days there ismusic by composers with a King’s connection: Tye and Gibbons werechoristers, and Hacomplaynt was Provost. Patrick Gowers grandson,Richard, is now junior organ scholar. Simon Preston (KC 1958) was achorister and organ scholar. On Thursday 2 July, BBC Radio 3 will record for future transmission theannual service sung jointly by the choirs of King’s and St John’s Colleges. This is another of the events in the current series of celebrations for the500th anniversary of the completion of the stone fabric of the Chapel. As is usual at the end of the Easter Term, music for the final two serviceshas been chosen by leaving choristers and graduating choral scholars.

The Friends of King’s College, Chapel and Choir

The Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge is one of the most importantmedieval buildings in Europe. Since its Foundation by King Henry VI overfive centuries ago, choral services have been an essential part of the dailylife of the College.

The architectural majesty of the Chapel and the great musical quality ofthe Choir are admired and loved by millions of people the world over. Yetthe College is solely responsible for the maintenance of the Chapel and thecosts of the Choir.

The Friends of King’s College, Chapel and Choir programme encouragesand recognises the financial support of individuals, families, foundationsand organisations.
