FR Lab Coats: A Hot-Button Topic

Flammable lab coats and regular clothing can and will make

a dangerous situation far worse if they catch fire. In 2008, a

UCLA research assistant was severely burned when chemicals

she was working with at a UCLA lab ignited, leaving her with

second- and third-degree burns on nearly half her body. Her

tragic death and the ensuing trial has brought problematic

and outdated safety policies and procedures at universities

across the country to light.

The Value of FR Lab Coats

In addition to the emotional devastation of human injury and

loss, universities and labs face a number of costly scenarios in

the aftermath of such lab accidents, including lawsuits, surging

insurance costs, reputation damage and loss of research

funding. One of the swiftest ways to increase the safety of your

lab is to outfit all workers in flame-resistant (FR) lab coats.

Preventing clothing ignition means minimizing the potential for

burn injuries. Labs are home to an abundance of hazards, and

many commonly reported lab accidents involve fire1. FR lab

coats can help protect the wearer against these accidents.

Why Nomex® IIIA Matters

The University of California school system has chosen to outfit their labs with Workrite FR lab coats

made from Nomex® IIIA fabric. These lab coats are UL-certified to NFPA 2112 for flash fire, will not

deteriorate when exposed to lab chemicals (including acids), and they don’t react to oxidizers like

bleach. Other popular FR cotton/nylon blends have a bad reaction to oxidizers and don’t hold up

well with strong acids, putting the wearer at risk.

Keep your staff, faculty and students protected with Workrite UL-certifiedNFPA 2112 lab coats.

Find Out What Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Is Required for Your Lab

The University of California recently developed a Lab Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT), making it easier for those charged

with running lab research projects to determine what PPE is required to ensure the safety of lab personnel.

This tool asks a variety of yes/no questions regarding the existence of certain materials and conditions in your

lab, the corresponding dangers those materials/conditions present, and the necessary PPE to protect

lab personnel from those dangers.

They are currently working toward making this software available to universities

nationwide, and you will be alerted the moment this comes to fruition.
