Douglas Stanton, AIA, has long been predisposed to timeless architectural principles and attitudes,

rather than fashionable trends. In each of his architectural endeavors, he emphasizes structural

integrity and age-old ideas of interior and exterior spatial integration. A member of the U.S. Green Building

Council, Doug promotes environmentally friendly design and construction techniques. These ideas form

the philosophy behind the West Hollywood firm he established to create completely integrated living

environments for clients wishing to fully experience, enjoy and help preserve their beautiful surroundings.

Strictly adhering to the belief that architecture, interior design and landscape design are one discipline,

Doug closely collaborates with a team of gifted architecture and interior design professionals on every

project. His background in landscape design—prior to founding the firm, he designed residential and

commercial gardens the world over—proves a distinct advantage, as Doug applies his expertise to his

projects, designing outdoor spaces that complement and enhance the structures they house.

Connecting interior and exterior is at the heart of the firm’s work and

manifests itself in a number of ways. Notably, Doug extends the living

areas of a home, bringing interior elements outdoors to create exterior

rooms. Doing so allows residents to readily take advantage of Southern

California’s incomparable climate. Yet even in areas with seasonal

restrictions, outdoor spaces enrich clients’ lives, imbuing in them a sense

of unity with the site. Thoughtful fenestration further relates indoor

and outdoor areas, providing ample views to the immediate and distant

scenery beyond the walls. The firm thus successfully achieves symbiosis,

designing not only homes but lifestyles, as well.

Unlike many of his peers, Doug favors stylistic diversity over a narrow range

of acceptable aesthetic solutions. Each person is as unique as the site on

which he chooses to live; Doug therefore treats each project accordingly,

listening carefully to the desires of the former and beautifully melding them

with the demands of the latter. Despite their broad range of architectural

solutions, all of the firm’s projects are characterized by supreme quality

and rigorous attention to detail, particularly that of interior architecture.

The intimacy of the firm allows Doug and his seven-person team to fully

explore the clients’ desires for their personal spaces—where they want to

store their spices, say—and tailor the interiors accordingly.

Moreover, the firm’s integrated process ensures the authenticity of each

endeavor. Rather than simply reiterating familiar images, Doug and his

team derive an original design from each project’s specific conditions.

The philosophy of integration further extends to the firm’s renovation

work. Commissioned to remodel and design additions for a number of

significant older homes, the firm strives to seamlessly fuse old and new so

that the home appears as though it has always been as they transformed

it. The firm’s proficiency at incorporating existing and new architecture

yields a unified whole that respects both the original structure and the

client’s needs.

Doug’s excellent projects have earned him residential, commercial and

landscape commissions throughout the state and beyond. Committed

to the belief that one’s outer world is an expression and can foster the

well-being of one’s inner self, he works to create balanced environments

that evoke delight in his clients. The firm’s beautiful projects are a

testament to its success.
