“THE COLLINS EXPERIENCE WAS A SEA OF SENSUAL SOUNDS, HEARTFELT NOTES, AND INTERESTING ANECDOTES…. MCLEAN GAVE THE AUDIENCE THE THOUGHTFUL LYRICS OF A MASTER SONGWRITER.” – THE MARYLAND THEATRE GUIDE

Don McLean and Judy Collins both burst onto the American musical landscape in the 1960s with anthems that came to define a generation. In an extraordinary double bill at DCA, these folk-rock stars will showcase the inimitable performance styles that made them legends. Grammy Hall of Fame inductee McLean’s wistful tenor is as unmistakable as the nostalgic groove of American Pie or the languid lyricism of Vincent (Starry Starry Night). Judy Collins’ crystalline soprano sailed onto American airwaves with the megahit Both Sides Now and remains iconic to this day, painting from an eclectic musical palette that includes folk, cabaret, pop, and show tunes. Together, Collins and McLean are unforgettable.

“CLASSIC JAZZ WITH A MODERN BOUNCE AND A HEART AS BIG AS A KICK DRUM.” – LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL

With a joyful swagger that could only come from New Orleans, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been playing Louisiana jazz since 1961. Today, the band’s multi-generational members sustain and expand the rich tradition of jazz music that permeates life in the Crescent City. Boasting a direct lineage from the earliest incarnations of New Orleans jazz, Preservation Hall Jazz Band maintains a robust touring and recording presence, collaborating with musicians like Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, and Del McCoury. “THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU CAN BELIEVE IN.” – HUFFINGTON POST

The genre-bending sister band, Rising Appalachia, returns after their barn-burning debut at DCA in 2013. Though they classify their music as “progressive Appalachian groove,” Rising Appalachia is impossible to pigeonhole, mixing traditional folk songs with soul music, spoken word poetry, and even beatboxing. National Public Radio calls the resulting musical blend “aural divinity.” Passionate and enthralling, Rising Appalachia centers on multi-instrumentalist sisters Leah and Chloe Smith, who wrap their haunting vocals around accompaniment by banjo, fiddle, drums, kalimba, djembe, spoons, and washboard, merging a broad array of world music traditions with their own deep Appalachian roots.

“EVOKES THE OLD-TIMEY SPIRIT OF A THOUSAND CRACKLING 78 RPM RECORDS.” – STEPHEN THOMPSON, NPR

Over the last decade, Pokey LaFarge has won the hearts of music lovers across the globe with a lively mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues, and western swing music, which LaFarge has dubbed “riverboat soul.” With a style that is at once ragged and polished, LaFarge is a songwriter, bandleader, innovator, and preservationist whose arsenal of talents has placed him at the forefront of old-time American music. Accompanied by a top-notch backup band, Pokey LaFarge plays with a classic bluesman’s confidence, infusing his performances with dynamic vocals, effortless wit, and good old-fashioned storytelling. Time Out Chicago writes, “His jumpy American roots music is pure joy.”

Ira Glass is the host and creator of This American Life, the award-winning public radio program that draws almost 2 million listeners per week. Like his radio show, Glass is known for his shrewd journalism, compassionate insight, and wry humor. At DCA, Glass will speak about This American Life and how it’s put together: what makes a compelling story, how he and his staff find stories for the show, and the show’s journalistic goals. Glass will combine his own narration with pre-taped quotes and music, recreating the sound of This American Life and offering his audience a behind-the-scenes look at one of America’s favorite radio programs.

“HOUSE-ROCKING AMBASSADORS OF HIP NOSTALGIA.” – ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Since 1993, when they electrified the Los Angeles music scene with a now-legendary residency at the Brown Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s irresistible performance style and aggressive musical innovation have distinguished them from the large pack of bands that launched the swing music revival of the 1990s. This seven-man group has forged a one-of-a-kind fusion of classic American sounds from jazz, swing, Dixieland, and big-band music, building their own songbook of original dance tunes. With appearances that range from the Swingers soundtrack to the Super Bowl, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has proven itself an unstoppable musical force and an American fan favorite.

“A SUAVE BACK-COUNTRY ELEGANCE.” - PASTE

Musical maverick Carrie Rodriguez uses her sultry contralto voice and fiery fiddle playing to create music that is both alluring and defiant, ranging from red-hot country to noir rock to plaintive folk. A Texas native who grew up playing classical violin, Rodriguez has written and toured with such luminaries as Lucinda Williams, John Prine, and Alejandro Escovedo. At DCA, Rodriguez will perform with Minnesotan guitarist Luke Jacobs, whom The Guardian calls “an impressive exponent of acoustic, electric and lap steel guitar.” Shifting easily between a desert swing and an urban strut, Rodriguez and Jacobs have been hailed by the Boston Globe as “one of the most compelling new voices on the roots-rock scene.”

“LYRICS THAT COULD BREAK HEARTS.” – BOSTON GLOBE

Spin magazine calls southern singer-songwriter Jason Isbell “one of the finest lyricists working today.” An Alabama native, Isbell began his career as a member of the popular alt-country band Drive-By Truckers. In 2007, Isbell embarked on a solo career, garnering popular and critical acclaim for his stark and poignant story songs. The raw, open power of Isbell’s 2013 album Southeastern landed the record on top-ten lists across the country. The New York Times calls Isbell “one of America’s thoroughbred songwriters, with a knack for rueful melodies and the kind of grainy blue-collar detail that pins a song in your mind.”

“ZIGGY MARLEY EVOKES ENERGY AND ELOQUENCE.” – MIAMI SUN-SENTINEL

Jamaica native Ziggy Marley first sat in on recording sessions with his father’s band, the legendary Bob Marley and the Wailers, when he was ten years old. Since then, in conjunction with his family band The Melody Makers, Marley has crafted his own soulful sound, which blends blues, R&B, hip-hop, and roots reggae. His potent messages of love, peace, and political activism, set to reggae’s infectious tropical beats, have earned him five Grammy Awards. A torchbearer of the reggae tradition, Ziggy Marley honors his father’s incomparable musical legacy while at the same time casting his own bright light.

“COME GATHER ’ROUND, PEOPLE, WHEREVER YOU ROAM...” – BOB DYLAN

Six of Door County’s favorite musicians reunite to pay tribute to Bob Dylan in a revue that has become one of the peninsula’s favorite concert traditions. After three years of popular acclaim and sold-out performances, this “Door County supergroup” will dip once again into the deep well of Bob Dylan’s work, breathing new life into classic songs like Lay Lady Lay and Blowin’ in the Wind. Memphis multi-instrumentalist Eric Lewis, California-based string player Chris Irwin, local folk crooners Katie Dahl and Jeanne Kuhns, and bassist-percussionists Rich Higdon and Patrick Palmer will all perform in this tribute to one of America’s most iconic songwriters.

“SIZZLING SWING, RICH MELODIES, TIGHT ARRANGEMENTS,

INVENTIVE SOLOS.” – ALL ABOUT JAZZ

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet celebrates the spontaneity and tradition of jazz in this tribute to the late, great Dave Brubeck, father of Quartet members Daniel Brubeck (drums) and Chris Brubeck (bass and trombone). Guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb round out this dynamic jazz ensemble. Although the Quartet’s style is rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues, and world music. This tribute to Dave Brubeck features many of the elder Brubeck’s trademark and lesser-known tunes, all suffused with the Quartet’s dedication to melody, rhythm, and the extemporaneous spirit of jazz.

“AN EXTRAORDINARY EVENING OF MUSIC, COMMUNITY, AND HEART.” – DOORCOUNTY.COM

Some of Door County’s most popular musicians will gather to present the second-annual “Play It Forward” benefit concert at Door Community Auditorium. A tradition that began with a wildly successful inaugural concert in 2013, Play It Forward reflects the best of Door County life, including the peninsula’s famously tight-knit community and vibrant music scene. Inspired by the life and legacy of Bo Johnson, a young Sister Bay resident who passed away from leukemia in 2012, the Play It Forward concert series benefits regional, national, and international causes identified and selected by the performers. This year’s concert will benefit Scandia Village’s Partners in Compassion Campaign.

“A DAZZLING PERFORMANCE…A PROFOUND SENSE OF RITUAL.” – WASHINGTON POST

For more than 30 years, the Lakota Sioux Indian Dance Theatre has carried on the powerful tradition of dance and song in Plains Indian Society. Founded in 1978, the Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre began with the support of traditional Lakota educators, powwow dancers, singers, and storytellers. Featuring some of the Sioux Nation’s most acclaimed performers, the troupe is now under the direction of noted choreographer Henry Smith. In their presentation at DCA, Come to the Center, this acclaimed ensemble presents the story of the birth, death, and rebirth of a nation. The New York Times hailed their performance as “a visual treat…a ritual celebration that made dancing a ceremonial act.”
