Let’s try it this way.• The average (or mean) of data is computed by

– 1. Adding all the data together (sum).– 2. Dividing that sum by the number of data.

Rocks Collected

Andrew 5 rocks 5

Shequeta 10 rocks 10

Karen 2 rocks 2

Byron 7 rocks + 7

5 + 10 + 2 + 7 = 24

24 ÷ 4 = 6So the average number of rocks collected was 6.

Here’s another example.The Aqua Club

Feona 3 fish 3

Lynda 2 fish 2

Chris 10 fish 10

Peter 6 fish 6

Cherelle 4 fish + 4

3 + 2 + 10 + 6 + 4 =25

25 ÷ 5 = 5

So the average number of fish owned by members of the Aqua club was 5.

You can find the average of your test grades.

Sam’s Spelling Grades

Jan. 9 90 % 90

Jan. 16 85 % 85

Jan. 25 82 % 82

Feb. 1 100 % 100

Feb. 8 100 % 100

Feb. 15 88 % + 86

90 + 85 + 82 + 100 + 100 + 86 = 543

543 ÷ 6 = 90.5So the average of Sam’s spelling grades is 90.5 which is rounded up to 91 which is an A.
