Message from the Office of DevelopmentThank you for your interest in Missouri State University-West Plains, the two-year open admissions campus of the Missouri State University System. We are the only public institution of higher education for 100 miles and are located in the 10th poorest congressional district in the country. We are proud of the associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees the West Plains campus offers to students in our seven-county service region. Keeping higher education affordable and accessible is our primary mission. Only through education can we break the cycle of poverty and improve the lives of our students, their families and the communities we serve. We are truly an island of opportunity in a sea of need.

We want your gift to be a reflection of your passions and interests, a lasting legacy of the values you hold dear. Through a discussion of our needs and giving choices, we think we can provide the perfect fit, one that matches your desired level of giving capability with your choice of designation. Missouri State University-West Plains Annual Fund

Missouri State-West Plains Annual Fundno gift is too small...

The founders of Missouri State University-West Plains had a vision that a regional university campus would transform the lives of our residents and the seven counties we serve. Nearly 50 years later, the university continues a proud tradition of serving our region, yet the combination of shrinking state funding and significant enrollment growth has created a challenge that only can be addressed through private giving.

Started in 2007, the annual fund is an optimal way to maximize a smaller donation and know it will benefit students of Missouri State University-West Plains. The annual fund provides funding for five different university areas that can’t be funded through state appropriations or tuition. Annual fund monies are used for:

• Scholarships • Emergency grants • University/Community Programs• Campus labs, technology and facilities• Educational initiatives

The annual fund is a perfect place for alumni to begin a tradition of giving to the university.

Friends of the Garnett Library

Friends of the Garnett LibraryGifts of $25 and up... Formed in 1992 shortly after the opening of the Garnett Library, the Friends organization has been a valuable link between the community and the university in helping to raise awareness of the services offered by the library and its needs. Members work diligently to ensure shelves are filled with current publications, as well as keeping computerized instructional equipment updated to assist students with learning and faculty with teaching.

A Friends membership is a great way to support the Garnett Library. Dues vary by membership level from a regular individual membership of $25 to a lifetime business membership level of $1,000. All members have access to over two million books and periodicals through the Garnett Library in West Plains and the Meyer Library at the Missouri State University campus in Springfield. Monthly noon meetings are held from September through April and include interesting programs, food and fun!

Donations made directly to the book fund will be honored with a brass plaque in the library. Donation levels are available from $500 to $10,000 and above.

Grizzly Athletics Booster Club

Grizzly Athletics Booster ClubGifts of $250 and up...

The athletic program is a vital and important part of campus life at Missouri State University-West Plains. Since their inception in 1993, the men’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams have provided entertainment for students and the community alike, and have attributed, in part, to the large enrollment increase on the West Plains campus. Participating athletes come from all states and many countries from around the globe, offering diversity to the Ozarks region and opportunities for students on our campus to learn about globalization. Grizzly sporting events are held in the West Plains Civic Center and have a direct impact on the economics of our community. The National Volleyball tournament alone will bring more than $100,000 to West Plains in one weekend.

Membership in the Grizzly Booster Club ensures excellent seating at Grizzly athletic events and helps defray the costs necessary to run a first-class athletic program. Booster club memberships are available from $250 for senior citizens to the Trophy level at $3,500. Opportunities also are available to sponsor tournaments and games throughout the year.

College athletes also have the opportunity to participate on the Grizzly cheer team.

General Fund

General FundSome donors choose to make gifts to the general fund, which allows the university to apply the funds where the need is greatest. Donors who are willing to help here are truly special, because there are not many intrinsic rewards for those willing to pay for facilities, maintenance and repair. As state funding continues to plummet and enrollment continues to soar, general fund donors really give where the funds are most desperately needed. These funds are for unrestricted use.

Annual Auction

Annual AuctionTickets: $30 Sponsorship: $250 and up...

The Annual Auction is the signature fundraising event for Missouri State University-West Plains. Held each spring, the auction has been raising money to fund property acquisition to improve the physical campus for 16 years. Several desirable properties remain within the university’s footprint, and auction proceeds also help with the cost of demolition and abatement (asbestos removal). Few other fundraising efforts impact the entire university the way property acquisition does. The fun-filled evening features music, dinner and a silent and live auction during which more than 350 items are sold to the highest bidder. Tickets are $30 each. Table sponsorships also are available.

The dedicated volunteer auction committee solicits auction items for an entire year preceding the event. If you’re interested in donating an item or an “experience” package, please contact the development office. Sponsorships also are available from $250 to $5,000.

Philanthropic Women for Education

Philanthropic Women for Education Gift of $1,000 per year for a minimum of five years... Women are becoming the rising tide in philanthropy. Studies show women are emerging as philanthropy decision makers in their families, partially because women are increasingly the major bread winner in the family, and partially because they frequently outlive their spouses and are left with major financial decisions.

Philanthropic Women for Education at Missouri State University-West Plains was formed in 2003. This group of women meets three times a year and votes annually to decide what programs to fund at the university. Members of the group share a passion for education and strong opinions on how their donations need to be used. Recently, the group made a five-year commitment to fund the Honors Professorship at $11,250 per year while a search is made for an endowment. This impacted about 100 honors students on our campus. Other projects have included funding tutors at the Student Academic and Advisement Support Center, equipment purchases, and travel to conferences for various student groups. Membership and pledge renewals are encouraged after the five or ten-year period.


Named Scholarship Opportunities

Named Scholarship Opportunities Gifts of $1,500 to $10,000 and up...

There is nothing more emotionally satisfying for a donor than watching a student he has financially helped finish school. The bond that develops between benefactor and recipient is one that lasts for years and is one reason why funding scholarships continues to be the most popular donor choice at our institution.

An endowed scholarship can be established for a minimum of $10,000. Although this can be made payable over a period of 10 years, it cannot be awarded until the full endowment is reached. Exceptions are made when the donor makes an additional annual gift of 4.5 percent of the fully endowed value so the scholarship can be awarded. Scholarship donors can establish guidelines for their scholarship based on geographic area, grade point average and enrollment status.


Named Scholarship Opportunities

An annual scholarship can be established for a minimum of $500 per year for five years. Again, guidelines can be established by the donor.

The greatest scholarship need on our campus is the private funding of institutional scholarships. These are scholarships traditionally funded by the university. Donors can fund these individual scholarships as well, thereby helping to fund a student’s education and simultaneously relieving the university of a financial obligation. By privately funding existing scholarships instead of creating new ones, this option is truly a win-win for all involved, especially in the current climate of drastic state budget cuts.

• All scholarship benefactors receive a thank you letter from their scholarship recipient. Recipient and benefactor also have the opportunity to meet and visit during the annual scholarship luncheon.

• All scholarship recipients are chosen by a scholarship committee appointed by the university administration.• All endowed scholarship benefactors are honored with publicity and a luncheon in their honor at historic Kellett Hall on

the Missouri State University-West Plains campus.



Looney Hall Room Naming Opportunities

M.O. Looney Hall Rm. Naming Opportunities Gifts of $20,000 and up... M.O. Looney Hall recently underwent an extensive renovation to house the Allied Health programs on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus. The former West Plains R-7 High School, built in 1915, was purchased and remodeled by the university in the early 1980s and was used for administration offices and classrooms. The downtown landmark now houses the nursing and respiratory therapy programs, as well as the Allied Health Simulation lab, made possible through a $250,000 grant assisted by U.S. Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson. The building was completed in the 2011 spring semester.

Cost of the renovation was funded through the Build America Bonds program; however, little money was left to properly equip the interior of the building. A $20,000 gift will secure a naming opportunity for each room in Looney Hall. Donations will fund furnishings, lab equipment and other essentials necessary for teaching the allied health professionals of tomorrow.


Endowed Chairs and Professorships

Endowed Chairs and Professorships Endowed Chair: $1 million & Endowed Professorship: $250,000 This giving option is for those donors desiring to leave an intellectual landmark on our campus by making sure certain areas of knowledge are valued and pursued. This is truly a commemorative and special opportunity for donors willing to make a leadership gift and wishing to make an impact on large groups of students. A scholarship touches one student. A chair or professorship has an exponential and lasting effect on many students.

Attracting and retaining exceptional faculty is critical to a university’s success. One of the reasons that faculty on the Springfield campus are closer to market compared to the West Plains faculty is that there are 16 endowed professorships and nine chairs in Springfield. Such endowments are the chancellor’s Number One priority as they will enhance and help support the salary for a faculty position in West Plains. The interest generated from an endowed chair would be $45,000 per year, and the interest generated from a professorship would be $11,250. All interest from such a gift would be applied to one particular faculty position, bringing that faculty member up to, but not over market. Any supplanted money saved by this process would either be returned to the operating budget or used in support of other faculty within the division, helping to raise their salaries to market level.

Donors who have contributed to the professorship will be honored in the following manner:

•Media publicity and special announcement upon receipt of gift.•Recognition throughout the year in published material and in speaking engagements when appropriate.•Recognized at each spring graduation when the recipient is announced.•Guests at a special dinner attended by the recipient of the chair or professorship, as well as a couple of his or her students.

*The West Plains campus currently has one professorship, the Donna Jones Endowed Professorship of Nursing, and no chairs.

FEMA Emergency Shelter/Student Rec Center Naming Opportunity Secured with $250,000 Gift

A major grant of $1,320,149 was approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to construct a storm shelter on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus. The University is allowed to use the facility for other purposes when it is not being occupied during severe weather situations. University officials have designated the facility as a multipurpose recreational center for student use.

The facility cost $2,221.144. FEMA funded $1,320,149, leaving $900,965 as the University’s responsibility. Students approved the recreation center fee in a campuswide vote during the spring 2010 semester. This was funded through an auxiliary bond, to be paid over 25 years with a student fee of $25 per semester. A naming opportunity for the building would be available for a $250,000 gift.

The gift would be placed in an endowment to help with the upkeep and maintain the appearance of the building as well as to help fund Student Government Association activities. The building was constructed on Garfield Avenue across the street from the current post office and opened in September 2012.


Gohn Hall

Gohn Hall $2 million needed

Gohn Hall on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus will provide a permanent home for Missouri State University’s Academic Outreach Program. In addition to administrative offices, the building will house seven classrooms in which bachelor’s and master’s degree programs can be offered locally. Currently, the program is located in a small, inadequate former parsonage on the perimeter of the campus. The Academic Outreach Program allows students to remain on the West Plains campus and complete their four-year bachelor’s degrees in elementary education and business without traveling to the Springfield campus. Classes are offered via ITV technology. Gohn Hall would support the rapid growth on the West Plains campus by freeing up five desperately needed classrooms for associate degree-seeking students.

The original structure at 603 West Main St. was gifted to the university in 2000 by a local banker, David Gohn, and his sister, long-time public educator Virginia Gohn Sapp. Original funding from this project was to have been received from the state of Missouri in various funding initiatives but has been repeatedly denied due to declining state revenues. In spite of these disappointments, this project remains a top capital priority of the Missouri State system. At least $500,000 already has been invested in design fees for both this project and its sister Facilities Reutilization Plan (FREUP) project, Hass-Hoover Hall. With the state continuing to predict a bleak economic forecast, state funding looks to be a remote possibility for this project. Private support will be necessary to begin and complete this 14,000-square-foot building.


Hass-Hoover Hall

Hass-Hoover Hall $6 million needed

Hass-Hoover Hall on the Missouri State University-West Plains Campus will provide a home for the Darr Honors Program, as well as a home for the Student Advisement and Academic Support Center (SAAS). Both of these programs are in desperate need of space. The Darr Honors Program has grown to approximately 100 students. Many of these honors students also serve as paid tutors in our SAAS Center, which is currently crammed into our overcrowded library. By placing these two programs together, our stronger students can help our weaker students. A large community room will also be housed in the structure, located west of Lybyer Technology Center and facing the Smith-London Centennial Bell Tower.

Tuttle Amphitheater

Tuttle Amphitheater No gift minimum...

This outdoor venue on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus will serve student and community needs alike. The venue will provide seating for 850 people and is estimated to cost $195,000. It will be located west of the Smith-London Centennial Bell Tower and will provide a venue for spectator events, concerts, rallies, films and theatrical performances. Spectators will be encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enhance seating on the grass-covered surfaces.

The amphitheater is named for Roger and Martha Tuttle, whose professional careers at Missouri State University-West Plains totaled a combined 61 years. Roger retired in 2010 as the Superintendent of Buildings, Grounds and Custodial Services. Martha retired in 2010 as the Purchasing/Human Resources Assistant. Only privately-raised funds will be used to build the Tuttle Amphitheater. Grant opportunities also will be pursued. A lead gift of $50,000 will secure a naming opportunity for the amphitheater stage and would help ensure the completion by the university’s 50th anniversary in 2013.

The Missouri State University Foundation is a 501 (c) (3), not-for-profit corporation that encourages private financial support for Missouri State University and manages an endowment on behalf of the university. Those who make contributions to Missouri State University through the foundation are entitled to all tax benefits authorized by law.
