About us

Donald Insall Associates is a leading conservation architecture practice with over 50 years’ experience in the care, repair and adaptation of historic buildings and places, together with the design of new buildings for sensitive sites. We pioneered an approach to conservation as a catalyst for regeneration and renewal, and continue to develop and apply it at a range of scales in locations around the UK and internationally.

Our positive, proactive approach goes beyond conservation and repair; we use our expertise and deep-rooted understanding of historic buildings to guide and support new interventions that enhance and sustain successful places. This has made us trusted advisors and partners to a diverse range of clients, from large landowners and institutions to small charities and homeowners.

Design and conservation

As conservation specialists with a love of design and respect for craftsmanship, our starting point for all our work is to understand the unique characteristics and opportunities of a building or place. We work with clients, stakeholders and advisers to realise these opportunities through design, conservation, repair and creative reuse.

New architecture, alongside repair and reuse of historic buildings, is a vital part of the growth and positive development of our built heritage. Our understanding of that heritage enables us, as architects, to develop creative, enduring responses to a client’s brief and the unique opportunities of a building, site or place, many of which have been recognised with more than 180 awards for design, craftsmanship and conservation.

We are particularly skilled in the integration of both modern and more traditional technologies in historic buildings and interiors to make them environmentally sustainable, energy-efficient and fit for modern purpose. Our philosophy, attention to detail, and understanding of traditional and new materials and construction methods ensure a living continuity for our buildings and places.

Historic building consultancy

We recognise that new interventions, together with the sensitive repair and conservation of historic fabric, can secure a sustainable future for historic buildings and places. Our architectural advisors, historians and researchers work at all scales, from individual listed buildings to major urban streets, developing strategies for their long-term care, management and development, and helping to achieve positive change in the built environment.

We offer our clients an approach that combines creativity and commercial awareness. Our expertise covers a very diverse range of building types and periods – we have worked with castles, Victorian churches, and twentieth century icons, while our conservation management plan for the whole of London’s Regent Street set the scene for its comprehensive renewal as a thriving piece of city.

We understand the significance of the physical and cultural context of buildings and places, and their strong historical and emotional connections. In our work, we strive to address these connections and affinities, and to identify and exploit opportunities to make a positive contribution to our built heritage.

About our company

Sir Donald Insall set up our practice in 1958, having previously been a Lethaby Scholar with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. From its earliest days we developed a methodology for analysing and understanding a building’s form and history, its significance and opportunities – a process now universally adopted and formalised in such guidance as Conservation Management Plans and Historic Building Appraisals.

We have around 90 staff including over 40 architects. We are proud of our ability to attract and retain some of the most talented professionals in our field, and while many of our staff have been with the practice for some years – giving our clients valuable continuity and long-standing relationships – we also ensure that expertise and skills are nurtured through successive generations.

Our practice has enjoyed steady, sustainable growth, its structure changing to reflect this expansion and development. It was incorporated as a limited company in 1981, and has been owned by an Employee Benefit Trust since 1991, providing for security and succession in our work and organisation.

Donald Insall Associates is an RIBA Chartered Practice and a member of the UK Green Building Council, and operates a Quality Assurance and Environmental Management System accredited to ISO9001 and ISO14001.
