  • The things we get for Christmas will not last as long as the things we get from Christmas. We will finish our Christmas treats, get bored with our Christmas toys and grow out of our Christmas clothes. But the things we get from Christ this Christmas and always - peace, hope, joy and love - will go with us all our life.

Why do we light the Advent Candles?

The first candle is the candle of John the Baptist who remembered Isaiah’s prophecy of PEACE .

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given. And the government shall be upon his shoulders and his name shall be called wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus is our peace. His peace is deep within us, reaches out to friends and strangers and brings justice to our world.

We light this candle for peace.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

    And also with you.

    Let us pray.

Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merciful protection awaken us to the truth of

our brokenness and the promise of your redemption, for you live and reign with the Father and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  • “Psalm 80: Lord, Make Us Turn to You”—Haugen

Shepherd of Israel, hearken from your throne and shine forth, O rouse your power, and come to save us.

We are your chosen vine, only by your care do we live, Reach out your hand, O Lord, unto your people.

If you will dwell with us, we shall live anew in your love, O shine upon us, great Lord of life.

    “Keep Your Lamps!”—Spiritual

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning,

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning,

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning,

    The time is drawing nigh.

    Mark 13:24-37

Kids can find the story on page 346 of the Spark Story Bible.

The holy gospel according to Mark.

Jesus said: “In those days, after that suffering,

    the sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not give its light,

and the stars will be falling from heaven,

and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. Then he will send out

the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you

know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at

the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

“But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey,

when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to

be on the watch. Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come,

in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes

suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

    The gospel of the Lord.

  • “Pay attention”

“Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying” ELW #436

  • I believe in God, the Father almighty,

    creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary.

    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

    He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again.

    He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    the holy catholic Church,

    the communion of saints,

    the forgiveness of sins,

    the resurrection of the body,

    and the life everlasting. Amen.

God of power and might, tear open the heavens and come quickly to this weary world. Hear our prayers for everyone in need.

Draw near to us, O God, and receive our prayers for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  • “He Came Down” ELW #253

    ELW p. 220

O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life with the words of

your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others, and at the end bring all the world

to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor

    and glory forever.

    Amen.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

    hallowed be thy name,

    thy kingdom come,

    thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

    Give us this day our daily bread;

    and forgive us our trespasses,

    as we forgive those

    who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

    but deliver us from evil.

    For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

    forever and ever. Amen.

  • The Creator of the stars bless your Advent waiting,

the long-expected Savior fill you with love,

the unexpected Spirit guide your journey,

    † now and forever.

    Amen.
