Since the City began a recycling program in January 2012, we have seen a tremendous amount of support and parcipaon from our cizens. “Job well done!” We are currently hauling 1,400,393 pounds or 700.20 tons of recyclables annually to Sonoco at no charge to the City. Unfortunately as stated above, recycling has changed in the way the materials are needed. Recently, the City was nofied by our current recycling handler that they will be closing their doors effecve January 31, 2019. This unexpected noficaon placed the City in a posion of not having a vendor to handle our recyclables. With this change, the City had to locate a vendor to handle our recyclables quickly; however, all vendors now charge for disposal of these materials and service. Also vendors have changed in what they will receive. The City has arranged a short term contract with Republic to receive our materials unl a long term soluon is solidified. “HELP WANTED” We Need Your Assistance To Control Costs

Recycling has taken on a whole new look. Until recently, the majority of United States recycling materials was shipped overseas. There was a period of time when recyclable materials were a sought after product. Due to the overabundance of most recyclables, the need for these materials are no longer sought after, in most cases have become a burden to depose of. Since the City began a recycling program in January 2012, we have seen a tremendous amount of support and participation from our citizens. “Job well done!” We are currently hauling 1,400,393 pounds or 700.20 tons of recyclables annually to Sonoco at no charge to the City. The only charges we have experienced, since 2012 are the cost of retrieving and delivering to our handler (Sonoco). That is 700.20 tons we are not putting or being charged for in the County landfill. Unfortunately as stated above, recycling has changed in the way the materials are needed. Recently, the City was notified by our current recycling handler that they will be closing their doors effective January 31, 2019. This unexpected notification placed the City in a position of not having a vendor to handle our recyclables. With this change, the City had to locate a vendor to handle our recyclables quickly; however, all vendors now charge for disposal of these materials and service. Also vendors have changed in what they will receive. The City has arranged a short term contract with Republic to receive our materials until a long term solution is solidified.

The following information includes new regulations to follow regarding what can and cannot be placed in the bin for recycling. Help the City avoid paying additional fees to Republic by following these guidelines to keep our loads free from costly contamination.

Questions? We will be happy to answer any recycling questions at the Public Works Department.

Reminders from stormwater

Everything that enters our stormwater system thru catch basins and stormwater ditches travels thru our system and is released unfiltered to the Catawba River Basin or the Broad River Basin. These River Basins provide drinking water and recreational waters for families downstream from us. In order to help us keep our stormwater from having a negative effect on the quality of water flowing to our downstream neighbors, and to keep these illicit discharges from being a violation of both the Federal Water Pollution Control Act and the Stormwater Ordinance of the City of Kings Mountain, the City of Kings Mountain and the City Stormwater Dept. ask that all yard waste such as grass, weeds, flowers, limbs, and leaves) be placed behind the curb and out of ditches. During Leaf Season, from October until February, leaves and grass may be placed loose behind the curb for collection by our vacuum trucks. From mid-February until mid-October each year leaves and grass must be bagged and placed behind the curb for collection. We also ask that when cutting your grass, do not blow grass onto streets or into ditch lines. Did you know that it is against the law to blow debris into the road when cutting grass or raking leaves? Not only will the debris wash into the storm drain and end up in the creeks and streams, but the grass and leaves themselves are a danger to motorcycle riders and bicyclists. Check out NC General Assembly Chapter 136; Transportation Article 7 Miscellane-ous Provision 136-90 & 136-91. And the Clean Water Act. If you use a lawn service, please advise them of these rules so that we may keep our stormwaters clean and prevent flooding conditions which can occur when catch basins and ditch lines are covered by debris. Thanks, in advance, for your cooperation in keeping our stormwater system clean.

Never leave yard waste on

the street or wash it into the

storm drain.

Keeping yard waste behind

the curb keeps storm drains

clear and allows the storm

water system to be effec-

tive.
