In May 2014 we re-opened our first hotel with the charisma we wish to imprint in all DHM units: quality of service, own philosophy, true experiences, a distinctive style, renowned gastronomy, personality and simplicity. After being closed for a few

months, due to renovation works, we re-opened Praia Verde Boutique Hotel. We are immensely happy with the work we have done, as well as with the way the world sees it, which is patent in many press articles and opinions as well as in figures: in May 2014 we doubled May’s 2013 turnover and we have doubled it again in 2015!

Officially we introduced DHM brand in February this year, with the management of the Monte Real Hotel Termas & Spa, the Palácio da Lousã Boutique Hotel and the family resort Eden Resort, in Albufeira – all awaiting renovation. Then we opened Furnas Boutique Hotel, in the breathtaking S. Miguel island, in a yet nearly unknown paradise named Azores archipelago, and in July we re-launched the now called Vila Monte Farm House. All these units represent a definitive step forward towards DHM’s affirmation as all of them represent a tiny extraordinary revolution, which is part of a larger process striving to create environments of a perfect simplicity. But instead of writing about them, we would like to invite you to visit them. Your judgment will be much better than my own words.

DHM will continue to grow. This summer we will open a new tourist resort named “The Crest”, in Almancil, and throughout next year we will attempt to add 4 new units to our fantastic portfolio. The revolution continues. Yet none of this would be possible without our investment and financing partners, our suppliers, our central services team and each hotel unit … to them our deepest and heartfelt thanks for their effort and work skills.

Hotels and restaurants are like living beings. Throughout their life cycle, investments in their hardware and software need to be continuous in order to ensure the growth in operations and the assets success. DHM focus is

not a secret: we pursue world trends whilst always attending to our own very specific nature. Our differentiation resides in People, in Design, in an innovative F & B and in Technology.

People. Everyday we look for warm and genuine DHM authenticity. Professionals with the best skills in their areas of expertise, who like to share and to learn, who also have a super positive and flexible attitude.

Design. Our design follows the world’s trends, is “greener” than ever, sometimes funky, occasionally retro, but always inspiring and timeless.

F & B. We call our lobbies “centres of happiness and wellbeing”. Here informality reigns, there is respect and a natural preference for everything that is handmade and experiences are part of a culinary memory which re-interprets homemade cuisine and its pure flavours: healthy food in a sophisticated yet informal atmosphere.

Technology. This is the most innovative aspect in our industry, where the handing out of a super Wi-Fi “free of charge” will be a normal routine. Hotels will provide their clients with the best mobile apps, which will be always available for reservations and information queries. Check-in online will be possible, as well as entering your room by means of the reading of a bar code, or even settling your final payment with your smartphone. Customized services will be the rule and will include an information management system with a great processing capacity.

DHM. Mostly, it is about a new attitude, a new lifestyle, a distinctive look, a new way of being. A different, unique, hotel concept, which will engage anyone looking for a simple, yet sophisticated approach to culture, to the environment and to its essence.

We often hear that the best ideas have already been invented. Even if hyperbolic, this is a valid observation, mostly to

comfort those who bet on safe yet uninteresting projects. Maybe it should be added that rarely have the best ideas been put into practice without fear, accepting the risk, believing and working hard to turn these ideas into reality.

This is what motivates people who have created and now work the DHM concept, a desire to be different, to

confer charm and creativity upon ideas that are simple, yet authentic and

genuine.

Basically, DHM refuses to be a re-read hotel script, one that has been repeated over and over again, but a new story written by people, the people who stay with us, with their wishes, demands and expectations. The best way for us to be truthful as a brand and as a concept is to be ourselves, informal, close and passionate. This will always be acknowledged.

We do not wish hotel stars or for people to say that we are the best. We only want people to say that we are different, intense, refreshing and memorable. We do not want to sell rooms, we want to sell experiences, experiences to be remembered.

D HM, the hotel management brand, was created by Discovery (a tourism and real estate fund) with the purpose to cross-manage part of the

fund’s assets, thus concentrating skills and synergies as to obtain the highest levels of efficiency in the national and international markets. DHM works as an “umbrella” brand for hotel units which thus have access to skills, promotion, “cross-selling” and the sharing of specialized resources. One of DHM main missions is the renovation of hotels by means of innovative and transformative models which lead to higher levels of competitiveness - thus adding life and worth to hotels.

DHM is a new concept in the hotel industry, a kind of return to hotels’ origins. Or, in other words, a return to a certain level of simplicity, to which sophistication, modernity and technological innovation were added. In February 2015 DHM – Discovery Hotel Management was officially launched: an ambitious project which aims at refashioning the Portuguese hotel industry by means of a change in the paradigm of an industry lacking innovative approaches. V ila Monte Farm House hotel concept is based on two major pillars, the first one being the revitalization, rehabilitation and

renovation of the existing infrastructures, aiming at a refreshed reading of the existing spaces, by creating a clear relationship between the Algarve architecture and its unique local features. In other words, to conceive a contemporary reading of the Algarve’s traditional architecture – the white-washed walls, the masonry, the woodwork (“reixas” and “treliças”), the geometry of platbands, terraces and white chimneys (“açoteias”). In terms of interior design, the strategy used reflects the hotel’s overall coherence, the play between light and shadow – so frequent in South Europe’s architecture, very influenced by the Arab culture – the white masonry, the transparencies, the straws, the matgrasses and traditional cloths are all fundamental pieces. All spaces were conceived to correspond to contemporary requisites for comfort.

The second pillar is based on the idea that gives the hotel its name: Hotel Farm House, or, to be precise, the replacement of the existing golf course by an olive grove and the introduction of a vegetable garden, an orchard and Mediterranean gardens. We have created opportunities for a larger number of events, workshops and the sale of products grown in the “Farm”. The hotel includes a store with the region’s main products, which also contributes to the creation (and strengthening) of relationships with local communities and farmers. Gardens, lake, orchards and the vegetable garden work as a web surrounding the buildings, thus enhancing the perception of colours, textures and aromas of native species. We aim at providing unique experiences in harmony with the Algarve’s essence, from its simple architecture to its comfortable and refined interiors, as well as emphasizing a new and strong relationship with the hotel’s surroundings.

DHM LOBBY MARKET CONCEPTOpen 24/7, 365 days a year, the Lobby Market is a flexible and multi-functional area. This lively room, perfect for socializing, is home to the reception, bar, library, work area, lounge, terrace, restaurant, À Terra grocery store and the manager’s desk. The lobby is the hotel’s heart, a meeting point, a starting point to our experiences but also an area for constant sharing.

Reception / Bar: an entrance area where guests may check-in, ask for information or book their experiences while drinking a refreshing flavoured water, a gin or a cocktail.

Library: an area for reading with selected books and magazines. Access to a public computer linked to the internet and a printer is available.

Manager’s desk: the manager’s working table is situated at the heart of the lobby to supervise the welcoming of guests and to provide easy accessibility for all guests’ needs.

Lounge: an area where you may relax or use the tables to work, for meals and/or leisure.

À Terra grocery store: a store with local items and gourmet products, as well as some utensils used in the hotel.

Wood oven: a central piece in the À Terra restaurant, where local traditional dishes are cooked alongside pizzas and freshly baked bread all through the day.

Josper Grill: a unique and innovative combination of a charcoal grill with an oven. Ideal for roasting / grilling all kinds of foods.

The main challenge was to maintain the old Furnas thermal spa original design. As such, the architectural project favoured the building’s

extension with the introduction of a neutral metal structure (anthracite grey) with large glass panels.

The interior design’s concept took shape from the natural context in which the hotel is situated. There was a clear enhancement of the beauty of the surrounding environment by means of the colours used and the aesthetical and design solutions found. These emphasize a journey through the historical, cultural and natural heritage of S. Miguel island, with an obvious focus on the Furnas thermal spa. The interior designer opted for different shades of white, symbolizing the light and the steam coming out of the volcanic thermal waters, the brown which portrays the ground’s strength and the green and blue which symbolize, respectively, the island’s lushness and the magnificent Atlantic ocean.

The region’s typical products and certain items characteristic of the Azores culture and heritage, such as antiques, were integrated in the hotel’s interior design project, conveying authenticity and a casual home-feeling. Aesthetically, there is a clear contrast between vintage and contemporary design pieces, which bestow rooms with a carefree refinement punctuated by stories which challenge the memories of the past and the comfort of the present. Hundreds of candles scattered all over turn the hotel into an almost magical setting.

More than a restaurant, À Terra is a way of life. Inspired in nature’s produce, À Terra is a journey back in time when all that surrounded us was pure and genuine, a warm place

where dishes are served with love and meals are cooked with skill and the heart.

À Terra is a restaurant with homemade, delicious, healthy and rustic food. Based on the concept of sharing, it includes a continuous all-day service and uses many local ingredients. Rustic life is back to give the soul the warm comfort of things that are close to our memory: aromas, textures, colours, flavours, melodies, sensations, stories ... basically, all life’s ingredients that we treasure and hold the potential to make us truly happy.

The wood oven and the Josper grill are the main “players” in this fornaria. Here you will find pizzas, bruschettas and various roasts prepared in traditional ways. Another key element to this restaurant is the bread. Baked in the wood oven, it is present from early morning to late evening.

Of Hawaian origin, Michael Callahan is nowadays a ‘mixologist’ of worldwide reputation, who started his career as a bartender in New York’s

World Trade Center in the final 90’s. He became an active ambassador for cocktails with a series of seminars, won several awards and continues to share his vast knowledge and passion for quality drinks around the world. Hence the training he provided to DHM team.

The first year of the new Praia Verde Boutique Hotel brought with it much recognition from the public

and the media. Apart from various news and opinion articles, the hotel received special mentions from some of the highest regarded international newspapers and magazines.

To begin with, CNN, in a list including 9 hotels only, considered Praia Verde one of the best recent boutique hotels in Europe; on the other hand, the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller magazine deemed Praia Verde one of the world’s 73 fashion hotels; Geo Saison, one of Germany’s main travel publications, reckoned the hotel as part of a list including the 100 most beautiful hotels in Europe.

P raia Verde Boutique Hotel is now home to new areas and services: one has been the construction of a new gym, the other is the new corporate area with two modern

and flexible meeting rooms. The panoramic gym has been equipped with the latest Life

Fitness machines, which include multimedia for the end-users. The meeting rooms, with 37 and 100 sqm, are informal and creative rooms based on the concept fusion of work and leisure, where, besides the latest sound and projection systems, there is a coffee station and an honesty bar.

Alongside these changes, we should highlight the introduction of a sharing table in the lobby area, the extension of the À Terra terraced area, or the changes in the lounge which now allow for more comfort and privacy.

The DHM’s meeting rooms are dynamic spaces that provide a fusion between work and lounge. In line with the new concepts and

meeting rhythms, our aim is to create differentiating places with a very own personality that promote a sharing and inspiring environment, leading professionals and teams to getting things done. The rooms are equipped with the latest technology and divided into workspaces and lounge.

Ponta Delgada marina and the Caminhos de Santiago, in Santiago do Cacém. Both projects, which will generate entirely renovated identities, reinforce DHM’s investment in the Azores and claim its entry in the Alentejo region. Both launchings are expected to take place in the first half of 2016.
