Meaning and Significance of Diwali

Diwali word s extracted from a sanskrit word Deepawali where Deep means light and wali means row hence row of lights.

Meaning The very name of this festival 'Deepavali' suggests the meaning of this festival. It is all about the light coming out of a tiny diya that is called 'Deep' in Hindi. Later the term 'Deepawali' became 'Diwali'. Deepawali or Diwali is also known as 'the festival of lights' because on this day there is light and light everywhere. Light, being symbol of hope and positive things, indicates the victory of good over evil. And by spreading light in every corner of our premises we try to destroy the reign of darkness on the night of Diwali.

SignificanceDiwali (Deepavali) is a festival where people from all age groups participate. They give expression to their happiness by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating the houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting near and dear ones to their households for partaking in a sumptuous feast. The lighting of lamps is a way of paying obeisance to god for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace, valor and fame.

It is one time in the whole year that children volunteer to leave their beds long before the day begins. In fact, the traditional oil bath at 3 a.m, is the only chore that stands between them and the pre-dawn adventures. They emerge, scrubbed clean to get into their festive attire, and light up little oil lamps, candles and scented sticks (agarbathis), the wherewithal for setting alight crackers and sparklers.

On Diwali night, little clay lamps are lit in Hindus homes, but now a days colored electric lamps are also used. What is the significance of lighting a lamp? There is a logical answer to this question. It is through the light that the beauty of this world is revealed or experienced. Most civilizations of the world recognize the importance of light as a gift of God. It has always been a symbol of whatever is positive in our world of experience.

To Hindus, darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge. Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces- wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression and suffering, etc. Competition is stiff, and even the little girl in silk frocks and their finery are watching out for the best sparklers and flowerpots, the rockets and Vishnuchakras, which light-up the night sky like a thousand stars. Grown-ups are the soul of generosity. Festive bonhomie abounds.

Diwali festival is celebrated even by Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists also. It has different reasons of significance for all these communities.

Hinduism: festival is associated with home-coming of Lord Rama, in honor of whom the kingdom of Ayodhya was all lit up with oil lamps and earthen pots. The festival marks the victory of good over evil and numerous rituals are observed to celebrate this auspicious day.

Jainism: Diwali marks the attainment of Nirvana by Lord Mahavira.

Sikhism: the festival of Diwali is significant in accordance with the illumination of the city of Amritsar, on the homecoming of Guru Har Gobind ji. Guru Har Gobind ji, along with many Hindu gurus were imprisoned by Emperor Jahangir. After he got free from the prison, he went to the golden temple in Amritsar. The entire city of Amritsar was lit with lamps on that day and is celebrated on Diwali.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Indian Association of Merrimack Valley, I welcome you all and wish you a very Happy Diwali.

IAMV was born out of a desire to build a vibrant community of all people of Indian origin in this area. It is a forum for us to help keep our unique culture alive through the activities of our families and our children. The Indian community is a special one – it is one of the most educated and enterprising groups in the area. IAMV organizes activities in order to bring this talented group together. I hope that many of you will go back tonight having made at least one new friend.

We had a grand New Year function last year followed by our regular event Holi this year and an exciting summer picnic. All events were a big success. There is a constraint of space limitation in all our functions. It is therefore, requested that you send your payment to reserve a place ahead of time. We always have a policy of first come, first served, except for life-members.

The youth group is big asset of our IAMV community. There are several very enthusiastic youths registered at this time and they have made big strides in serving the community. Sameer is the current president of this group. The primary goal of this group is to integrate themselves in the Indian community, make connection among themselves, and do volunteer work that helps in college admission. They are the future of our community.

Today we are celebrating Diwali. The IAMV office bearers have worked hard throughout this year to present you with an excellent program that should appeal to your senses with taste and aroma, rhythm and sound, color and costumes, with participants of all ages. Please remember that these people are all volunteers who find time from their hectic professional schedules.

We have planned for a New Years Eve Function. Please watch our website/email for more details and reserve your spot early before we fill up the limited seats.

We used to have an issue with flier distribution in the past. We are striving to communicate through email as much as possible. If you did not get the flier or email this time then most likely we do not have your correct contact information. Please verify your address with us to ensure that we send you all our future communications. In addition, please check our website to find out about any updates on our upcoming events.

Some of you wonder why we have so many rules about cultural programs or mailing the checks on time for our events. It is to be fair to all our guests, participants, to keep the cost low and to improve our planning.

IAMV is proud to offer scholarships for the college bound high school students of 2010. I would like to thank Dr. Raj Gohel and Dr. Amit Lala for generously sponsoring this year’s scholarship. I would like to thank the School officials who gave us access to these facilities. I would like to thank Mrs. & Mr. Preeti and Manoj Munjal for sponsorship of the trophies tonight. I would also like to thank all the advertisers who support us with advertisements in the Diwali booklet and the media that helps us get the word out. I would also like to thank the families and the children who participate in our cultural program. We are always looking for fresh eager faces who might be interested in participating in future events. Please accept my apologies if I have missed acknowledging anyone else here. We have reserved a box of sweet per family on the occasion of Diwali. Please don’t forget to pick up your box after dinner.

Student 2009 Scholarship AwardInvitation to Apply

Deadline: February 15, 2010

The Indian Association of Merrimack Valley (IAMV) invites college bound students to apply for the IAMV Student 2010 Scholarship Award. Students of the IAMV members must be paid member of the year 2008, 2009 and 2010 to be eligible are invited to submit applications for scholarships.Scholarship awards are expected to be $500 each. The number of awards will depend on scholarship contribution received in this year and/or carried forward from the previous year(s).

The award(s) will be presented to the student(s) at the annual 2010 Holi Celebration. Scholarships are awarded competitively on academic merit by way of selection panel.

Completed applications must be mailed in advance to be received by February 15, 2010

IAMV Youth Group

It’s been almost three years since the Indian Association of Merrimack Valley Youth Group was formed to build leadership skills and bring community spirit to the kids of the IAMV. What started out as a small group of about 9 or 10 teenagers has now grown to include around 30. From the beginning, the Youth Group has been helping out in the community as well as having fun and participating in the functions.

Monthly visits to the Sutton Hill Senior Center in North Andover are one of our main community service activities. There, we play bingo, talk to the seniors, and have even performed a dance for them in the past. We have been going to the nursing home since January of 2007 and the seniors look forward to our visits as they have gotten to know us over the past couple years.

Aside from the nursing home, Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger in Boston is one of our main fundraising events of the year. This walk takes place on the first Sunday in May and raises millions of dollars annually for the people who go to bed hungry in the state of Massachusetts. Almost half our group completed the entire 20-mile walk this past year in a little less than 8 hours. We raised $6,693; beating our goal by over 2,500 dollars. Four YG members were heart and sole walkers, raising over 500 dollars each. The Walk for Hunger raised the large sum of 3.8 million dollars this past year with the help of thousands of walkers like us.

We are always welcoming new members to join the youth group. To join, you have to become a member of the IAMV first and the age requirements are 13 – 18.
