RCS’ newest National Honor Society inductees are: (front, l-r) Tesla Keyes, Brianna Matson, Nellie Shelters, Breanna Waild, Molly Morgante, Chloe Greeley and (back, l-r) Ben Jackson, Christopher Wadsworth, Eric Andrews, Kelsie Beaver, Carlye Evans, Kyle Luce, Bradley Adams and Anna Hribar.

All too often, when we look for ways to become involved we can have diffi culty fi nding the right “fi t”.

We ask ourselves, will I have the time? Do I have the knowledge? How can I make a difference?

We, in the CSE offi ce are looking for volunteers in several different areas and perhaps one of these will be right up your alley.

First, we are in need of folks to serve as surrogate parents. The role of a surrogate parent is to act in a child’s best interest in special education if the parent cannot be located. This has never really hap-pened because we always know where our parents and guardians can be found, but in the event that a child would end up in Randolph, need special education services, and have absolutely no one to act in their best interest, a surrogate parent is required by state law.

Qualifi cations include:You cannot be an employee or agent

of our district or of the State Education Department

You shall have no other interest that would confl ict with your allegiance to the student you would represent

You attend a training to enhance your skills and knowledge so that you can adequately represent the child

You would be approved by the Board of Education and your name would be placed on a list of surrogate parents to be used if we have a student who has no one to represent them.

Second, we are in need of folks to serve as parent members on our Committee on Special Education and our Preschool Committee on Special Education. The role of a parent member is to assist parents when their child begins the process of special education. Like surrogate parents, a parent member is a required part of the initial CSE meeting. If you have expe-rienced a CSE meeting, you know that it can be a bit daunting for a parent the fi rst time. The parent member helps to ease

this feeling. Having been through the experience, a parent member knows, fi rst hand, what a parent is feeling.

Qualifi cations include:You have a child who is currently

receiving special education servicesYou attend a training to enhance

your skills and knowledge so that you feel comfortable advocating with parents.

So, if either of these volunteer oppor-tunities is the right “fi t” for you, please contact the CSE offi ce at 358-7034 or 358-7033 for more information. We look forward to hearing from you.

The Natural Resources class at the Ellicottville Career and Techni-cal Education Center fi nished up its fall curriculum in forest man-agement. The class has a contract to log a portion of the state forest that is in need of thinning. In the spring, they will take the logs to the sawmill at the Career Tech Center and cut them into dimen-sional lumber for building projects, as well as fi rewood. Students learn the science of forest management as well as the technical skills to measure and estimate the stand-ing board feet of a log and total harvest. Pictured in upper photo are RCS students (l-r) Josh Draves, James Halla and Ben Searle. In the photo at right are (l-r) Derreck Livermore, Brandon Barber and Ross Sowrey.

Challenger Learning Center puts students in Mission Control

The fi fth grade recently went on a fi eld trip to the Challenger Learning Center located at St. Bonaventure University. Students took part in two unique experiences. They completed a mission simulation to Halley’s Comet. Students took turns at being in the Mission Control Center, utilizing the latest technology to control and communicate with those on the space craft, and being in the space station, conducting experiments and building equipment to use in space. All missions were successful, launching a probe into the gas tail of Halley’s Comet and examining the gases that were found there using the electromagnetic light spectrum. Students also toured the Quick Art Center, observ-ing some wonderful pieces and completing activities. The students had a really great time and learned a lot about NASA and art.

The elementary book fair was a great success again this year! A BIG thank you to the many volunteers who came in and worked the book fair all week! This wonderful fundraiser would not happen if it wasn’t for our awesome volunteers! We made a profi t of over $800. This money goes to expand the library’s book budget. An additional $512 worth of books was earned for the library.

The Kindergar-ten class enjoyed their annual Fall Parade, in costume, throughout the building. The chil-dren were unable to walk and tour the Randolph Manor as they usually do each Halloween so instead they paraded through the school. Students, teachers and helpers all en-joyed the parade.

By Dr. RockeyPart 1 - Demographics

School can be a smorgasbord of abbreviations and unknown terms but Special Education has a language all its own. Tackling the lingo of special education can be overwhelming for anyone, but if we start at the center-piece of special education, the IEP, it can help us to add meaning to the many other abbreviations.

IEP stands for individual education plan. It is the hallmark of any child’s program and clearly states the things that the school will do to help the child attain academically. There are several sections to an IEP and I would like to go through each one highlighting important aspects.

The fi rst section contains demo-graphic information like name, age, date of birth, residence, native lan-guage, medical alerts and disability classifi cation. State Education Regula-tion 200.1 (zz) defi ne disabilities as any of the following:

Autism Deafness Deaf-Blindness Emotional Disturbance Hearing Impairments Learning Disability Mental Retardation Multiple Disabilities Orthopedic Impairment Other Health Impaired Speech or Language Impairment Traumatic Brain Injury Visual Impairment

Any of these terms can be heart-breaking words to parents and loved ones, but the fact is, this has to be clearly stated on the IEP. As a person who raised a foster child with PDD (a form of Autism), I know the feeling of hearing or seeing the words. For this reason, we often use abbreviations for the words, like MR, LD, ED, MHI, TBI, etc.

If you have any questions, you can always contact us. We would be glad to provide any additional information on this fi rst section of the IEP or any other assistance.

Students who are absent due to illness are encouraged to check their teacher’s websites and also with classmates for any missed homework assignments. All of our teachers can be reached via e-mail by visiting the Faculty/Staff Directory on the school website (www.randolphcsd.org) or by clicking on the teacher name in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Alma MaterHere’s a song we raise to Randolph Central School. In our hearts our loyalty for her will rule. May her fame for long survive, We are here

to keep alive, The spirit of the school we love, To her we’ll be true! Red and white, Red and white. White for purity. Red for courage strong, Red and white, Red and white. We will always love and cherish long. So, let our voices ring, Ring loud and clear! With deep aff ection, And recollection,

of Randolph Central School. Long may her colors wave, High on the hill. We’re singing your praises, Randolph Central School! RAH!!!!!!!!!!!

Some 350 Randolph Elementary School children, from Pre-K to fourth grade, spent two hours in a touch-’n-go afternoon with fi re equipment from Coldspring, East Randolph and Randolph Fire Departments. They even inspected the ambulance brought in by the Randolph Rescue Squad.

Earlier in the week Ran-dolph fi remen demonstrated fi re rescue techniques to students in the class room. Insert shows second grader Madysen Barber, 7, getting a thrill of a life time wearing an offi cial fi re helmet and sitting behind the wheel of one of Randolph’s big fi re trucks. Area fi remen for many years have observed October Fire Prevention Week with their big touch-’n-go program at the elementary school.
