C-MAP Norway is a leading producer and

distributor of electronic charts operating in

many countries all over the globe. It has over

10 years of experience in the digital

cartographic field and is an acknowledged

innovator in the market.

Provision of a complete professional digital

cartographic service to its clients has always

been C-MAP's main objective and therefore

customer requirements play a key role in the

formulation of all services offered by C-MAP.

In today's maritime industry where ease of

access, functionality, quality, cost effectiveness

and global chart coverage are prerequisite, very

few chart suppliers can fulfil these demands.

All services offered by C-MAP, however, fully

correspond with these requirements.

C-MAP ENC Distribution

This brochure describes just one of the services inC-MAP's portfolio - distribution of official ElectronicNavigational Charts (ENCs), which is a relatively recentissue that is rapidly gaining acknowledgement andacceptance in the maritime world. This brochure coversthe following issues related to ENC distribution:

· Co-operation with national Hydrographic Offices iscentral to C-MAP strategy as they are the source of alldata produced by C-MAP. One such co-operation isthe agreement for the distribution of ENCs. The current regulations encourage the use of ENCson an ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display andInformation System), which on a SOLAS class vesselare the equivalent of official paper charts, given thatcertain conditions are satisfied.

· Official data is distributed in C-MAP's own format,CM-93/3, which has been type certified by the DnV.The co-operation with system manufacturers is vitalin this process and C-MAP actively supports them insoftware development and the consequentdistribution of C-MAP charts.

· One of the complementary benefits of C-MAP's ENCdistribution service is the possibility to easily use theC-MAP dual fuel option. In addition, C-MAP offersReal Time Updating service (RTU) for automaticallyupdating official ENCs by e-mail or the Internet.

· Finally, there is information regarding C-MAP ChartCatalogue, which is a software tool used to look atchart coverage and order licenses.

Chart Data Issued by National Hydrographic Offices

Co-operation with hydrographic offices

C-MAP's strategy of co-operating with Hydrographic Officesplays an essential part in achieving its objective of supplying aprofessional cartographic service, as they are the source of alldata produced and distributed by C-MAP.

Among agreements to digitise national paper chart portfoliosand to produce digital chart data for Hydrographic OfficesC-MAP also has the permission to distribute official ElectronicNavigational Chart data (ENC) produced by HydrographicOffices.

C-MAP encourages and actively supports HO's in theproduction and distribution of ENCs. As data becomesavailable, C-MAP enters agreements with individual HO's inorder to become an authorised distributor on behalf ofnational Hydrographic Offices. C-MAP aims to distribute acomplete portfolio of ENC data and updating services fromHydrographic Offices.

The distribution of ENC data from Hydrographic Offices variesfrom country to country and depends upon the policy ofindividual HO's.

Regulations

A prime feature of ENC data is that it can replace the carriagerequirements for paper charts on SOLAS class vessels whenimplemented in a type approved Electronic Chart Display andInformation System - ECDIS and complimented by an updatingservice.

The principal regulation governing the content of a digital chartis S57, which is a data format for electronic charts defined by theInternational Hydrographic Organisation, the IHO. S57 is anexchange format used within the community of HydrographicOffices and is used for the mutual exchange of chart data.

Type Approved Distribution Format

C-MAP ENC Distribution

System ENC (SENC)

The format in which ENC data isdistributed has been an issue thatthe Hydrographic Community hasdiscussed for some time, thecritical issues being protection andthe implementation of data in theNavigation System.

In order to be displayed on anavigation system S57 data mustbe compiled into an internalformat that can be displayed onElectronic Chart Display andInformation Systems - ECDIS. This format is known as the'System ENC' or SENC.

The International HydrographicOrganisation has ratified theconcept of distribution of officialENC data in a SENC format. The Norwegian HydrographicService worked closely withDet Norske Veritas to define typeapproval requirements fordistribution of S57 data in SENCformat and C-MAP was the firstcompany to have their SENCformat type approved by DNV.

From an end-user's point of view thedistribution of official data in a SENCformat has the major advantage thatthere is no compilation of datarequired on-board when installingthe data in the ECDIS system. Not only does this save time but italso means that the navigator on thebridge is never faced with theproblem of handling errors that mayarise in a compilation process. All compilation takes place in acontrolled environment prior todistribution to the vessel. In the caseof the SENC format developed byC-MAP, the data is encrypted andhighly compressed which is a greatcost saving advantage when data istransferred via satellitecommunications.

Support of system manufacturers

Another essential part of C-MAP's strategy, apart from the cooperation withHydrographic Offices, is the support of chart systems manufacturers, asthey form a direct link to end users.

Support of manufacturers and end users is aimed at solving problemsrelated to the implementation and distribution of digital chart data incompliance with IMO and IHO specifications. C-MAP offers systemmanufacturers software development kits for the implementation ofelectronic charts in their systems, and which then enable systemmanufacturers to provide cost effective distribution of chart data to endusers. The fact that the majority of system manufacturers use C-MAPtechnology enables them to support and implement the SENC distributionconcept.

C-MAP Additional Services

Dual fuel data

Global coverage of ENC data will take time toachieve. End users have the possibility of usingother data produced by HO's and/or bycommercial companies in areas not covered byENC.

C-MAP produces and maintains the largestcommercially available database of digital chartsin the world. Data produced by C-MAP and ENCdata from Hydrographic Offices are distributedin the same format which enables a unique dualfuel, vector-vector solution to end users in aSystem Electronic Navigational Chart – SENC,format which has also been type approved byDNV. It is important to note that data producedby C-MAP may not be used as a replacement forpaper charts even if used in a type approvedECDIS system. This data however, facilitates thefull functionality of an ECDIS system.

Real Time Updating

Subscribers to C-MAP'S ENC service are providedwith updated data on a CD on regular basis andincremental updates are available on requestthrough the Real Time Updating service. The RTUservice enables end users to access and upgradedata from C-MAP's central database using Internetor e-mail. Customers can download electroniccharts and updates on demand, ensuring that thelatest updated data is always displayed.

Communication technology and automaticupdating services using the Internet and e-mail isleading edge technology used by C-MAP. The RTUinfrastructure developed by C-MAP has beendesigned to meet IMO Performance standards forECDIS systems and has been type approved byDNV.

Coverage and availability

The production of official Electronic NavigationalCharts - ENC by Hydrographic Offices hasincreased considerably and will continue to doso. Updated Information on the ENC coverageavailable from C-MAP is available on the C-MAPNorway website www.c-map.no.

How to get started

Chart Catalogue on web

The catalogue of chart distributed by C-MAP is available todownload from Internet. This is a tool that can be used forordering all electronic charts in CM-93/3format, in both, pre-defined portfolios of zones and areas, andofficial ENC from Hydrographic Offices.

The chart catalogue is particularly useful for ordering ENCs.HOs supply ENCs in a cell structure whereby the customer ischarged for each cell. The Chart Catalogue, however, has beendesigned to ease the ordering and handling of this cellstructure.

Unlike the predefined portfolios, Chart Catalogue allows theuser to limit the number of cells to any given voyage. The ChartCatalogue contains a route planner where the voyage can beplanned. It also provides an overview of all charts necessary forthe voyage and the coordinates of each waypoint. Once theroute is planned and the "order" button pressed, theprogramme calculates the total cost of the charts based on theprices for the various ENCs. Once C-MAP receives the order allchosen ENC cells will be converted to a tailor made portfolio ofcharts, which requires only one password for the whole file.
