Basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian teacher in 1891, who was asked to create an indoor game that could be played inside during cold winters. The first basketball game was played by 18 players, nine versus nine, using a football and two peach baskets. Naismiths students wanted to call the game Naismith Game, but the teacher suggested basketball, because they used a basket and ball to play the game. Over the years the baskets were put on long poles and eventually metal hoops, nets, and backboards were added. The football was eventually traded for a Spalding ball, much like the ball that is used today. Also, specifics such as dribbling and passing the ball were added to the game as well.

Today basketball is a sport played by two, 5 person teams who are trying to score as many baskets as they can by shooting the ball through a hoop, by any means as possible, e.g. shooting, dunking, alley-oops. By the end of the game if the score is tied overtime is allowed until there is a clear winner of the game. Over the years there have been many techniques in the art of passing, shooting, and dribbling. Terminology and offensive and defensive strategies have also evolved. Even though basketball was invented to be an indoor sport, the game has can almost be played anywhere, all you need is a rim and people to play with
