Outdoor activity can work wonders to dispel postpartum depression and the “baby blues” — but just

getting out of the house with a young child in tow can be an exercise in itself! After packing up the baby, a diaper bag, stroller, snacks and planning a schedule that includes breaks for feeding time and naps, many new parents feel alone and ill-equipped to stride off into the woods with a newborn.

As the mother of a new baby, Sarah Maxwell understood that hesitation all too well. When the Dripping Springs mom discovered Hike it Baby, a new na-tional organization dedicated to getting babies and their families out into nature, it was a “game changer” for her as a stay-at-home mom, she says.

Sarah quickly became one of three leaders for the Austin branch of Hike it

Baby and now coordinates several family hikes a month in southwest Austin and the Dripping Springs area.

At 18 months, her son Theo is a veter-an of weekly hikes at Charro Ranch Park, hike and plays at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, “urban strolls” at the Dripping Springs Farmers Market and any number of specially organized hikes at festivals and inviting locations all around the area.

In any given month, the Central Texas branch of Hike it Baby sponsors dozens of free hikes for families, ranging from easy strolls through urban gathering ar-eas to offroad hikes along greenbelts and through rural parks.

New moms, just getting back into shape, will feel encouraged by the group cameraderie and not too challenged by the pace, promises Sarah. The hikes are

geared for children, who sometimes find flowers and insects along the trail as in-teresting as the hike itself. One of the guidelines the group lives by, she says, is “we leave no family behind!”

“Some of the hikes are led by two- and -three -year-olds,” Sarah points out. “You might not get your heart rate up (although carrying a ten-to-thirty pound child in a backpack can help with that!) - but the kids get out and experience na-ture.” Hikes are rated by difficulty level - green for easy, stroller-friendly condi-tions; blue for three-to-seven mile hikes that usually require a baby carrier; black for longer and more serious hiking con-ditions - though still easy enough for young ones or elderly family members to join in.

One of Sarah’s main motivations in volunteering with Hike it Baby is that, as a former teacher, she knows how impor-tant nature literacy is to the well-being of children and the world. “Kids need real life experiences outside. I want them to know that nature isn’t some place you visit - it’s us!” she says with conviction.

The whole family - from moms and dads, sisters and brothers, to aunts and uncles, nannies and grannies, are wel-come on Hike it Baby hikes. The Austin group has added family camping trips to their list of activities. Their recent camp-ing trip to Colorado Bend State Park was “such a success that we’re planning on making it a regularly occuring event,” says Sarah.

Hike it Baby began in 2013 in Port-land Oregon when new mother, Shanti

Hodges, asked a few other new moms and their babies to join her and her baby on a hike. Within a few months, the new-ly formed organization grew from a few dozen families in Portland to more than 5,000 families in 28 cities. Currently,at least 70 hikes a week nationwide are led by Hike it Baby volunteers.

FYI • Hike it Baby Austin organizes dozens of hikes a month around the Austin area - including several in the Dripping Springs area led by volunteer organizer Sarah Maxwell. For a schedule of hikes and more information on Hike it Baby, visit the web site at www.hikeitbaby.com, or join the Facebook page, “Hike it Baby Austin.”

To celebrate its third anniversary, Texas Olive Festival is adding three more days to this year’s expo

to really put the “epic” into epicurean. Held at Texas Hill Country Olive

Company’s Tuscan-style millhouse and olive orchards north of Drip-ping Springs, the festival this May 28-31 will be a celebration of all things olive.

There will be olive oil cook-ing demos with five chefs, olive orchard tours, olive oil beau-ty treatments, gelato made with olive oil, ol-ive tree painting classes - even mov-ies about olives!

And closely related to olive culture, guests can enjoy wine tasting with 16 area wineries, bread baking classes, a charcuterie class, a 4-H junior chef con-test, and specialty vendors — along with local music and kids’ games.

Food from Dripping Springs restau-rants Crepe Crazy and Smoke ‘n Hops will be available, plus enjoy cooking demonstrations by Chef Ross Burwell of Cabernet Grill, Chef David Holtzman of the Art Institute, Chef Jeff Balfour of Southerleigh, and Chefs Alma and Jeff Martinez of El Alma and Alcomar.e

Texas Hill Country Olive Company owner John Gambini will lead tours of his olive orchards, including the mill-ing area.

During the tours he’ll talk about the process of pressing olives into oil and the

many health benefits of olive oil (includ-ing new findings from current research).

Several varieties of live olive trees will be available for purchase - along with advice about raising olives in the Hill Country from a panel of the state’s

leading organic olive growers. Thursday’s activities in-clude orchard tours; a

bread baking class with resident baker Annie

Latimer; and a cook-ing class with chef Yvonne Cavazos, who will prepare shrimp, rice and red snapper dish-es from Mexico. Following a Sip and Shop in the

late afternoon, the evening’s movie

“Duel of the Giants,” portrays the centuries-

old rivalry between Italy and Spain for dominance of the international olive trade.

Friday, along with orchard tours and bread baking classes with Annie, chef Mike Thompson of NOLA Kitchen in Austin will prepare Cajun and Creole dishes such as Eggplant Caponata with Olives, Shrimp Etouffee and Cherries Jubilee with Texas Hill Country Olive Company’s Cherry Balsamic Vinegar. A Sip and Shop session precedes the eve-ning’s movie, “In the Olive Kingdom,” which tours Spain’s southern province of Andalusia, the world’s largest olive-producing region.

The festival’s expo day Saturday should prove full of activities - including a Natural Beauty Solutions workshop featuring olive oil recipes by Mary Helen
