It’s everything the Fourth of July should be: hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, family fun and—of course—sitting

on a grassy hillside watching fireworks explode in the night sky.

Fire in the Sky makes a big move to Dripping Springs July 4 as State Repre-sentative Jason Isaac, North Hays County Fire/Rescue and the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce team up to bring the event to Dripping Springs Ranch Park. Jason, who sponsored Fire in the Sky in Belterra the past two years, says the new Event Center at Dripping Springs Ranch Park offers increased space, parking and covered shelter to expand the event to the entire Dripping Springs community.

This year, there will be more family-fun activities and—with extra distance separating the crowd from the launching

area—more fireworks! The event is free to the public; donations will be accepted. A portion of donations go to North Hays County Fire/Rescue.

Dripping Springs Ranch Park’s 166,000 square-foot Event Center will be open during the event, providing rest-rooms and shaded shelter. Parking is free, directed by ProTech Automotive. Local purveyors of handmade and select items will offer their wares at booths in the Event Center’s vendor hall.

Activities at Dripping Springs Ranch Park kick off at 5 pm, as the Dripping Cook Off Club serves hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks. Ice cream and snow cone ven-dors will be on hand, along with a petting zoo and a kiddy train pulled by a riding lawnmower. Pony rides will be available in the Event Center’s covered arena and

For those who want to experience the event in style, Rep. Isaac hosts a VIP event in the air-conditioned comfort of the center’s 12,000 square-foot Special Venue Room. VIP ticket holders can enjoy a dinner catered by the Salt Lick, a selec-tion of locally-produced adult beverages, and reserved seating outside the Special Venue Room during the fireworks dis-play. Live music by Lonnie Atkinson and band will entertain the VIP group in the hall throughout the evening.

Just after dark, around 9 pm, the professional fireworks show will begin! Spectators can sit on the grassy hill over-looking the pond, while American Fire-works of Bastrop launches volley after volley of colorful missiles from the far side of the pond. “Folks will be able to see the reflection of the fireworks on the pond,” suggests Rep. Isaac.

Before dark, the Ranch Park’s play-ground and hiking trails will be open for use. Folks are invited to bring pic-nics (no glass containers, please), blan-kets and lawn chairs; the Ranch Park

will have picnic tables, bleachers and chairs available.

Dripping Springs Ranch Park be-came part of Dripping Springs’ recre-ational facilities in 2008 when the City purchased the 110-acre Harrison family homestead and working ranch, with the headwaters of Little Barton Creek run-ning through the property. In addition to the multi-use Event Center, completed in 2013, the park offers more than 100 acres of woodlands and open space with a farmhouse, open arena, playground and picnic tables, walking and riding trails, RV and primitive camping areas, horse-shoe and washer pitching pits. More than eight acres have been set aside as a wildlife preservation and conservation area. The park is open dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

DRIPPING SPRINGS H For the first time, Dripping Springs High School was represent-ed this year at the National Speech and Debate Association Tournament, and recent graduate David Slater placed third in the nation in his event. David and rising junior Ryan Love each qualified for the tournament, which was held June 14-21 in Overland Park, Kansas. More than 3,300 top Speech and Debate students from across the United States, Guam, Saipan, Bulgaria, China, Korea, and Taiwan competed.

David competed in 13 back-to-back rounds of Extemporaneous Debate, which included 565 students. In Extemporaneous Debate, a student is given 30 minutes to research a topic and prepare a speech. His topics included the Affordable Care Act, e-cigarette regulations, renewable energy sources, and the decriminal-ization of marijuana. Ryan competed in Impromptu Speaking, advancing to the elimi-nation rounds. Dripping Springs High School teacher Christy Trussell serves as the ad-viser/coach for the speech and debate program.

DSHS debater places third at nationals

OMAHA, NEBRASKA H Congratulations to the 11U Dripping Springs Tigers, who participated in a week long tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, June 10-13. The Tigers—a competitive 11U Select baseball team representing Dripping Springs— started play Tuesday and lost their first game 9-1 to the Olentagy Stix from Ohio. They took a huge jump on their seeding with the first game loss, but after that they were unstoppable. The Tigers went on to win seven games in a row and defeated the only team that they lost to in the championship game 5-0.

A tournament record of 7-1 led them to the Championship win in the Gold Division. There were 14 teams in the 11U age group from all over the country: Texas, California, Nebraska, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Alabama, South Carolina, and Iowa. The Ti-gers’ teamwork and dedication to each other proved to be the prime factor in their suc-cess. Along the way they had three comeback, one-run wins and another one-run win in which they held on to a one-run lead. The Tigers are a AA class team in USSSA and were able to take down 3 AAA and two Majors teams along the way to the Championship.

Highlights from the week of games included: Brennan Frickel hitting two home runs; Cameron O’Banan hitting one home run; and Blake Bryant pitching a complete game shut out in the Championship. The 11U Dripping Springs Tigers roster incudes Dylan Wolfe (shortstop, pitcher); Luke D’Alessandro (outfield, pitcher); Blake Bryant (pitcher, second base, catcher); Josh Malcom (outfield); Tony Parra (outfield, pitcher); Jackson Groves (second base, pitcher; Reece Dunn (catcher, pitcher); Stephen Wierz-bowski (second base, pitcher); Brady LeBlanc (first base, pitcher); Cameron O’Banan (outfield, catcher); Eli Tod (first base, pitcher); and Brennan Frickel (third base). Coaches are Shane LeBlanc, Mike D’Alessandro, and Eric Wolfe.

What do you feed a hedgehog? Need a chinchilla harness or UVB sunblock for your iguana?

How about just a great selection of high-quality dog and cat foods?

All of these—and 10,000 more prod-ucts for pets—can be found right here in Dripping Springs at the new Whole Pets Market on Highway 290. Inside the vermilion-colored building is an inven-tory catering to every pet’s needs, or every owner’s wants. From the basics of canned dog food to the exotics of a cocka-tiel seed mix and decorated pet pastries —they’ve got it all.

General manager Larry Jureczki sums it up with a grin, “We sell every-thing but the animal!”

They do carry a few live things for sale: crickets, mealworms, night crawl-ers, red wigglers and wax worms, sold as food for a variety of pets. There are bulk bins with eight kinds of bird food, three rabbit rations, and five varieties of guin-ea pig, hamster and gerbil pellets. Large freezers filled with meat, bones and raw dog food line one long wall. There’s even a machine that will custom-engrave metal tags for your pet’s collar.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind store,” says Lar-ry. A former construction worker, Larry ran a feedstore and Ace Hardware before taking on the management of Whole Pets Market. He remodeled the interior of the former Java Sea Traders building using all reclaimed and repurposed materials to create the shelves, bins, counters and displays that now fill the 5,000 square feet of pet paradise. Managing a pet store is a smart move for an animal-lover like Larry, who owns seven dogs, eight horses, two

miniature horses, a llama, a burro, several finches and parakeets, hundreds of goats, and an unknown number of cats. He proudly produces photos on his cell phone of his babies....kittens, that is - and oh, inci-dentally, there’s his granddaughter!

Beyond carrying every pet product conceivable, Whole Pets Market sponsors events and services that benefit the general community of pets and their keepers. Toenail Tuesdays is a quick, painless way to maintain your pup’s pedicure. The first Tuesday of each month, a vet tech is on hand at the store to clip dogs’ and cats’ claws for free - although tips are appreciated and benefit a local animal

shelter. WAG Rescue organization holds monthly pet adoption clinics at the store and low-cost mobile vaccination clinics are frequent. Schedules of all these events, along with more animal-helpful activities and services are chronicled on the active Whole Pets Market Facebook page.

The Market puts special emphasis into sourcing products produced in Texas and the region. A large display of smoke-cured bones comes from a small producer in Spring, Texas. They carry Merrick™ brand dog food from Amarillo and Canidae® products from Brownwood. With a little advance notice, Larry can special-order 50 pound bags of organic chicken feed and scratch.

The store is pet-friendly and leashed animals can be brought in to help pick out their favorite products. Service is hugely emphasized, with a store policy of carry-ing bags to the register for customers, then to their car. There’s a frequent buyer dis-count of one free bag of food for each 12 purchased. Whether it’s a collar for your ferret or kitty litter in bulk, Whole Pets Market has what you need.
