GUIDE BOOK HISTORY

From 1834, Cannes became one of THEplaces to be! Across the Channel, the city ofCannes had acquired a great reputation forits climate after a former Royal Chancellor,Lord Henry Brougham and Vaux, decided tospend the winter here... and ended upstaying thirty- four years!A talented ambassador for Cannes, invitinghis friends and relations to the city, LordBrougham opened the doors to the city to hispeers and kings, queens, princesses, dukesas well as great writers and up and comingartists like Prosper Mérimée, Guy de Mau-passant, Domergue, Chateaubriand, VictorHugo, Stendhal, Picabia, Renoir and Picasso. And so the first tourist season was born, from autumn to winter. With the advent ofpaid leave, the season switched to springand summer. In the days when the firsttrains brought Queen Victoria of England,Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, andthe kings and queens of Sweden, Denmark,Belgium and Spain, Cannes was enriched bysumptuous palaces, mansions, big luxuryhotels and venues for festivities.

The Croisette, then called Boulevard del’Impératrice, became a social focal point edging abeautiful bay. Several gaming establishmentsadded an international flavour that appealed to anOriental clientele of Maharajahs, Sultans and Emirsas well as Western high society. France’s first claytennis court was built in Cannes by Sir ThomasWoolfield, nicknamed the “Marquis of Carabas”.

CANNES, CAPITAL OF SOPHISTICATED SPORTS

Golf became popular from as early as 1890,spurred on by Grand Duke Michael of Russia, whofounded the Cannes Golf Club in Cannes-Mandelieu… Sailing, introduced a few yearsearlier under the aegis of the Duke of Vallom-brosa, definitely established its pedigree inCannes thanks to the Prince of Wales, the fu- tureEdward VII, through the prestigious RoyalRegattas in the Bay of Cannes. Participantsincluded the crowned heads of England, Russia,Denmark and Sweden. The 20th centurytransformed the City of Princes into a leadingtourism destination on the French Riviera.

The hisToryat the foot of a hill that served asa lookout over the Seigniory ofRodoard, Cannes started

out as a small fishing harbour overrun withreeds. It was called "Portu Canuae" and facedthe Lérins Islands, known since Antiquityunder the names of Léro and Lérina.

In 999, one year before the awful Year OneThousand, the "Castrum Marcellus", fort wasbuilt on the hill of the Suquet."Portu Canuae"

had its "khan", its "high point" in Celto-Ligurianterminology, hence the name Cannes!

Having experienced Spanish and Saraceninvasions, the "royal" incarceration of theenigmatic Man in the Iron Mask, thespectacular breakout of Marshal Bazaine, thearmies of Charles Quint warring against thoseof François I, not to mention the landing ofNapoleon Bonaparte, Cannes was alreadyprepared for its cosmopolitan destiny…

Foundedin 997, Azure, silver and gold, Cannes’s coat of arms reflects the city’s sky, light and sunshine.

Around the year 1000, the Abbey of Lérins added two letters : C for “Canna” (Cannes) onthe upper left of the shield and A for “Abbatia” (Abbey) on the lower right.

This coat of arms remained unchanged until 1633, when the consuls of Cannes decided, without any authorisation,to replace the two letters (C and A) with two fleur-de-lis, a tribute to the Marquis de Saint Chamond, representingthe Governor of Provence.

The silver palm on a field of blue was the Abbey’s emblem. Still present on the coat of arms today, it makes referenceto the palm tree on which Saint Honoratus climbed for the sea to clean his island of the snakes infesting it.

But it was not until 20th September 1946, inCannes’ former Casino, that the InternationalFilm Festival opened - the first major inter-national cultural event after the war. The firstFrench convention centre was built in 1947 tohost this prestigious event. The first Festivals exuded the air of a society, tourism or film event rather than a filmcompetition. The Cannes Film Festival quicklybecame the quintessential event for filmprofessionals, as well as the annual eventwith the greatest media coverage. Today, almost 4,000 journalists attend the Festival.

CANNes FilMof the Americans andthe British wereshocked by interference

from fascist governments in the selection offilms for the Venice Film Festival, theMostra di Venezia. They thereforeencouraged the idea of an international filmfestival in France. Possible host townsincluded Vichy, Biarritz and Algers, butCannes won the vote because of “its

sunshine and delightful setting” as well asits suitable infrastructure. Presided over byLouis Lumière, the inventor of movingpictures, the 1st International Film Festivalin Cannes was to take place from 1st to 20thSeptember 1939.Its aim was “to encourage the developmentof the cinematographic art in all its formsand to foster a spirit of collaborationbetween countries that produce films”.

The history of the "Palais des Festivals et desCongrès de Cannes" is closely linked to that ofthe Cannes Film Festival. An initial buildingwas constructed on the Croisette to host thisleading event in 1947, where JW Marriottcurrently stands. In light of the increasing success of the FilmFestival, and the emergence of businesstourism - notably with the first MIPTVconference back in 1965 - the city of Cannesdecided to construct a new Conference Centrein 1979, on the site of the Municipal Casino. In total, the Palais des Festivals now has44,000 m² of exhibition space and 15auditoriums. Each year, it hosts over 50international trade events and 300,000delegates, making Cannes the second mostpopular business tourism destination in France.

A world first. After becoming the first Europeancongress centre to receive triple certification, the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès deCannes continued its commitment in 2012 bysigning up to the ISO 26000 voluntary standardfor Corporate Social Responsibility, therebyconfirming its target level of excellence. The Tourist Information Office organises guided tours of the Palais des Festivals.See "Palais des Festivals" in the GUIDED TOURS, WALKS AND HIKES section.

The old village of Èze is an eagle's nest per-ched at 429 metres above sea-level. The vil-lage's tiny streets thread their way below theruins of a medieval château. Many artists andcraftsmen today occupy the cellars and groundfloors that were once stables or sheepfolds. Afortified double gate dating from the 14thcentury marks the entrance to the old village.

The very pretty small town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin can be seen as a bridge betweenMonaco and Menton. The old part of the vil-lage, wrapped around its fortress up above, isa glorious tangle of narrow alleys, coveredstreets, stairways, narrow passages, foun-tains and niches.

Monaco has always been a particularlypopu- lar tourist destination thanks to itsMediterranean climate and its many luxuryhotels. Each year, it hosts the Formula 1Grand Prix, a leading event on the FrenchRiviera. There is also the old part ofMonaco, with its cathedral and hanginggardens, not forgetting the famousOceanographic Museum.

A few kilometres from Monaco, on theItalian border, stands Menton, aharmonious blend of nature and culture. The town of gardens and lemons is also atown of art and history ; Menton is proud ofits outstanding natural and historicalheritage. From the cliff roads overhangingthe town, one can admire the picturepostcard scene of a seaside town bathed inwarm sunshine all year round.
