THE HISTORYat the foot of a hill that servedas a lookout over the Seignioryof Rodoard, Cannes started out

as a small fishing harbour overrun withreeds. It was called "Portu Canuae" andfaced the Lérins Islands, known sinceAntiquity under the names of Léro andLérina. In 999, one year before the awful YearOne Thousand, the "Castrum Marcellus",fort was built on the hill of the Suquet."PortuCanuae" had its "khan", its "high point" in

Celto-Ligurian terminology, hence the nameCannes!

Having experienced Spanish and Saraceninvasions, the "royal" incarceration of theenigmatic Man in the Iron Mask, thespectacular breakout of Marshal Bazaine, thearmies of Charles Quint warring against thoseof François I, not to mention the landing ofNapoleon Bonaparte, Cannes was alreadyprepared for its cosmopolitan destiny…

GUIDEBOOK HISTORY

From 1834, Cannes became one of THEplaces to be! Across the Channel, the city ofCannes had acquired a great reputation for itsclimate after a former Royal Chancellor, LordHenry Brougham and Vaux, decided to spendthe winter here... and ended up staying thirty-four years! A talented ambassador for Cannes, invitinghis friends and relations to the city, LordBrougham opened the doors to the city to hispeers and kings, queens, princesses, dukesas well as great writers and up and comingartists like Prosper Mérimée, Guy de Mau-passant, Domergue, Chateaubriand, VictorHugo, Stendhal, Picabia, Renoir and Picasso. And so the first tourist season was born, fromautumn to winter. With the advent of paidleave, the season switched to spring andsummer. In the days when the first trainsbrought Queen Victoria of England, TsarinaMaria Alexandrovna of Russia, and the kingsand queens of Sweden, Denmark, Belgiumand Spain, Cannes was enriched by sump-tuous palaces, mansions, big luxury hotelsand venues for festivities.

The Croisette, then called Boulevard de l’Impé-ratrice, became a social focal point edging abeautiful bay. Several gaming establishmentsadded an international flavour that appealed toan Oriental clientele of Maharajahs, Sultans andEmirs as well as Western high society. France’sfirst clay tennis court was built in Cannes by SirThomas Woolfield, nicknamed the “Marquis ofCarabas”.

CANNES, CAPITAL OF SOPHISTICATED SPORTS

Golf became popular from as early as 1890,spurred on by Grand Duke Michael of Russia, who founded the Cannes Golf Club in Cannes-Mandelieu... Sailing, introduced a few yearsearlier under the aegis of the Duke of Vallom-brosa, definitely established its pedigree inCannes thanks to the Prince of Wales, the fu-ture Edward VII, through the prestigious RoyalRegattas in the Bay of Cannes. Participants in-cluded the crowned heads of England, Russia,Denmark and Sweden. The 20th century trans-formed the City of Princes into a leading tou-rism destination on the French Riviera.

Azure, silver and gold, Cannes’s coat of arms reflects the city’s sky, light andsunshine. Around the year 1000, the Abbey of Lérins added two letters: C for“Canna” (Cannes) on the upper left of the shield and A for “Abbatia” (Abbey) on the lower right.

This coat of arms remained unchanged until 1633, when the consuls of Cannes decided, without anyauthorisation, to replace the two letters (C and A) with two fleur-de-lis, a tribute to the Marquis deSaint Chamond, representing the Governor of Provence.

The silver palm on a field of blue was the Abbey’s emblem. Still present on the coat of arms today,it makes reference to the palm tree on which Saint Honoratus climbed for the sea to clean his islandof the snakes infesting it.

THE CANNESthe Americans and theBritish were shocked byinterference from fascist

governments in the selection of films for theVenice Film Festival, the Mostra di Venezia. They therefore encouraged the idea of aninternational film festival in France. Possiblehost towns included Vichy, Biarritz andAlgiers, but Cannes won the vote because of“its sunshine and delightful setting” as well

as its suitable infrastructure. Presided overby Louis Lumière, the inventor of movingpictures, the 1st International Film Festivalin Cannes was to take place from 1st to 20thSeptember 1939. Its aim was “to encourage the developmentof the cinematographic art in all its formsand to foster a spirit of collaboration betweencountries that produce films”.

But it was not until 20th September 1946, inCannes’ former Casino, that the InternationalFilm Festival opened - the first major inter-national cultural event after the war. Thefirst French convention centre was built in1947 to host this prestigious event. The first Festivals exuded the air of a society, tourism or film event rather than a filmcompetition. The Cannes Film Festivalquickly became the quintessential event forfilm professionals, as well as the annualevent with the greatest media coverage.Today, almost 4,000 journalists attend theFestival.

The history of the "Palais des Festivals et desCongrès de Cannes" is closely linked to thatof the Cannes Film Festival. An initialbuilding was constructed on the Croisette tohost this leading event in 1947, where JWMarriott currently stands. In light of the increasing success of the FilmFestival, and the emergence of businesstourism - notably with the first MIPTVconference back in 1965 – the city of Cannesdecided to construct a new Conference Centrein 1979, on the site of the Municipal Casino. In total, the Palais des Festivals now has44,000m² of exhibition space and 15auditoriums. GRAND JAS CEMETERY Grand Jas Cemetery covers nine hectares andis unanimously considered to be one of themost remarkable cemeteries in France, afterPère Lachaise in Paris. It opened in 1866, when the cemeteries in LeSuquet and Le Caroubier could no longer copewith demographic expansion and the increasingarrival of newcomers from the colonies andabroad. Hence the creation of the "Carré Anglais",an area reserved largely for the English aristocracy.

Thanks to its outstanding geographical loca-tion, its landscaped architecture, age-old treesand abundant floral decoration, the cemeteryremains a favourite spot for strolling and me-ditation. The Siagne Canal was constructed in 1868 tosupply the town of Cannes with water. Fromits source at Saint Cézaire, it winds its waydown a gentle slope through the hills of thehinterland, ending up at the peak of La Californiein Cannes.

From Mougins to the observatory in SuperCannes, the canal runs underground, creatinga wide footpath. The delightful views ofCannes from the top of Avenue Ziem right tothe Route de Vallauris has inspired many anartist. Then, from Avenue Bellini, the routethreads its way through mimosa and eucalyptustrees and giant agaves before ending trium-phantly with a dazzling panorama of PalmBeach Point and the Lérins Islands. Manyyears ago, this was a favourite itinerary ofwinter holidaymakers.

GUIDEBOOK EXCURSIONS IN THE AREA

The old village of Èze is an eagle's nest per-ched at 429 metres above sea-level. The vil-lage's tiny streets thread their way below theruins of a medieval château. Many artists andcraftsmen today occupy the cellars andground floors that were once stables orsheepfolds. A fortified double gate datingfrom the 14th century marks the entrance tothe old village. The very pretty small town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin can be seen as a bridge betweenMonaco and Menton. The old part of the vil-lage, wrapped around its fortress up above, isa glorious tangle of narrow alleys, coveredstreets, stairways, narrow passages, foun-tains and niches.

Monaco has always been a particularly popu-lar tourist destination thanks to its Mediter-ranean climate and its many luxury hotels. Each year, it hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix,a leading event on the French Riviera. Thereis also the old part of Monaco, with its cathe-dral and hanging gardens, not forgetting thefamous Oceanographic Museum.A few kilometres from Monaco, on the Italianborder, stands Menton, a harmonious blendof nature and culture. The town of gardensand lemons is also a town of art and history;Menton is proud of its outstanding naturaland historical heritage. From the cliff roadsoverhanging the town, one can admire thepicture postcard scene of a seaside town ba-thed in warm sunshine all year round.

Èze & Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

Saint-Tropez grew around its 15th-century citadelto become a small fishing village by the beginning ofthe 20th century. It was the first town to be liberatedduring the Landing in Provence and became an internationally recognised seaside resort as earlyas the 1950s, thanks to the enthusiasm of NewWave artists. It thrived with the '60s scene, eventuallybecoming a holiday destination for the Europeanand American jet set and for tourists in search ofProvençal authenticity... or celebrities!

You can also use these services to discoverlocal festivities, temporary exhibitions, villagesand the Italian markets. Information availablefrom the Tourist Office.
