THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE developed this directory to benefi t organic farmers and buyers in Minnesota.

ARE YOU A FARMER? Use it to:

Assess production and market opportunities, as well as areas of saturation. If you see that every other organic farmer in your area is producing barley, you may decide to diff erentiate by planting a diff erent small grain instead. Or, if no one else in the area is growing organic dry beans, or sunfl owers, for example, this situation might merit further investigation.

Seek out advice and assistance (e.g., If you are interested in fl ax production, you might contact individuals who have listed themselves as organic fl ax growers).

Form production and/or marketing alliances. For example, a grower may discover that four other growers within a 100-mile radius are planting organic blue corn. Th ese growers may want to get together and negotiate as a group with buyers or shippers.

Identify and contact farmers already growing a commodity they want to buy.Find groups of farmers that farm in a certain county or region.Contact farmers about potential production contracts.

We also want this directory to help agricultural professionals – including extension educators, department of agriculture staff and others – identify areas of the state that have clusters of organic growers who may need technical assistance or services.

ABOUT THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Our mission is to enhance Minnesotans’ quality of life by ensuring the integrity of our food supply, the health of our environment, and the strength of our agricultural economy. Th e Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has existed in one form or another for more than 100 years. During that time, the state has changed from a mostly rural society with an economy based on agriculture and mining to a multifaceted state dominated by a world-class metropolitan area. As the state has changed, so has our department.

Our three general areas of responsibility include: • Protecting our food supply • Protecting our natural resources • Cultivating our agricultural economy

MDA services start before the crop even goes into the ground. We help ensure that farmers have quality seed, fertilizer, pesticides and animal feed so that the fi nal product is also high quality. Th e MDA also provides risk-management education, organic and sustainable ag technical support, dairy and livestock development support, and other services designed to help farmers succeed.

We continue our service after the plants and animals leave the farm. We perform duties such as dairy and food processing facility inspections and international market development. At the consumer level, we provide services such as consumer food safety education, ag chemical spill response, and grocery store inspections.
