India is aiming to re-establish itself in the globalmap as an economic power. Revivingmanufacturing sector through the slogan of“Make in India” has brought back the focus oncost, quality, and value. In this scenario GITAMSchool of International Business, organized aConference on “Contemporary Issues of StrategicCost Management”, on February 6th 2015, inassociation with the Institute of Cost Accountantsof India (ICAI), Kolkata. Prof. V.K. Kumar, Deanand Director, GSIB, set the tone for theconference by presenting the theme of theconference. Prof. Kumar explained that there areparadigm shifts which occurred in the waybusinesses are being done today. He explainedhow the traditional costing and managementaccounting practices do not support the presentdilemmas of managerial decision making. Themajor shifts he delineated were, product shortageto surplus, technologically illiterate consumer toliterate, changes in product usage, crossfunctional integration, shortened product lifecycles, profit maximization to profit satisfaction.Sri. A.N.Raman, a global Expert on CostManagement and Consultant to Confederation ofIndian Industries, while delivering his speciallecture on ‘Total Cost Management (TCM)’,described in detail the entire framework of TCM.He emphasized that Strategic Cost Managementis not just reduction of costs and savings ofexpenses, it is not even a tool, rather it is anapproach towards costing and pricing for longterm sustainability and competitiveness. Heexplained that the days have changed and todaycompanies have to work backwards to arrive atthe cost, since more often the demandingcustomer is setting the price. Organizations haveto look at managing their costs considering theentire chain from the suppliers to the customers, rather than their own firm. He opined that suchan approach cannot be enforced by any regulationor law, rather it should be voluntarily brought

7

out by the companies themselves, so that ourIndian companies become truly exemplary andcost leaders, ready to face any stiff globalcompetition. During the conference, otherspeakers from industry like, RINL, HOSPIRA,SYNERGIES CASTINGS, NOVOTEL,BRANDIX, NAVAL DOCKYARD, PENA-4,POSITIVE SOLUTIONS, made presentations onthe cost management practices, issues, casestudies relevant for their sector.

Sri. D.L.S. Sreshti, Central Council member ofICAI, graced the occasion as chief guest.Speaking on the occasion, he described the roleof ICAI, and the professional CMA body in India.Sri.Sreshti highlighted the importance of thecontributions made by a Cost & ManagementAccountant behind every successfulorganization. With all the future plans ofdevelopment for the new Andhra Pradesh, therole of a CMA is very crucial and he re-iteratedthat “Cost saving is not to be seen as somethingwhich is relevant only for a company, rather itis a saving for the entire nation”.

Sri. Chiranjib Das, Joint Director, ICAI, as thekeynote speaker, opined that today CostManagement should possess a strategicorientation. In the days when the competition, technology, and customer preferences are fastchanging and creating pressures on the bottom-line of the firm, Cost and ManagementAccountants should absorb these trends into theirplanning and budgeting. This requires thenecessary change in the culture of theorganizations, up skilling the employees andfostering need based innovative practices.

Prof. G. Subrahmanyam, Hon’ble ViceChancellor, GITAM University, presentedGITAM University and stated that it is one ofthe top universities in south India with focus onresearch and industry integration.

3rd INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR ATSINGAPORE

Report on International Study Tour toSingapore (15/02/2015 to 20/02/2015)

Tour Coordinators:Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra &Dr. Radha Raghurama Patruni

International study tour has immense importancefor students studying International Business. Inthe last academic year (2014-15) students of firstyear MBA Programme visited Singapore forstudy tour irrespective of their specialization. They spent about a week (15/02/2015 – 20/02/2015) in Singapore for observing Port andMaritime operations, Container Freight Station

12

(CFS) operations, Urban RedevelopmentAuthority’s strategic planning processes and acouple of manufacturing plants namely - “TigerBrewery and neWater Centre”. While ‘TigerBrewery’ produces Beer and other beverages,‘neWater Centre’ is a waste-water processingplant which fulfils the need of the Industry atlarge. Though it has started bottle-packing in 500ml, the product (packaged water) is not wellperceived by the customers for theirconsumption. Moreover in the process ofcleaning the waste water, the water becomes soclean that it loses its mineral and vitamincomponents which again is not congenial forhuman consumption. However, in both the plantsstudents adequately learned about theiroperational management practices. Maritime &Port as well as CFS operations are perceived tobe very important sectors in Logistics and SupplyChain Management, particularly from view pointof International Business. Students wereexplained various operational practices liketurnaround times of ships, the importance ofSingapore CFS in the World map as a Trans-shipment hub etc., by the concerned experts. From the operations of Urban RedevelopmentAuthority they learned things on UrbanDevelopment and its resource (land in particular)optimization methodologies. A couple ofInternational Travel and Tour agencies facilitatedthe entire tour which was delegated by a fewfaculties from the School. Overall the tourremained successful both from view point oflearning and entertainment.

After the successful completion of the tour, students presented their Report on a particulartopic, which was given to them prior to the visit(both from subjects taught and practicalexposure), before a panel of faculty. The topicswere broadly based on Logistics and SupplyChain Management. The entire learning exposuremerited one credit for each student.
