1 Introduction

A module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain an FETAC award. Candidates are assessed to establish whether they have achieved the required standards. Credit is awarded for each module successfully completed. The standards in a module are expressed principally in terms of specific learning outcomes, i.e. what the learner will be able to do on successful completion of the module. The other elements of the module - the purpose, general aims, assessment details and assessment criteria - combine with the learning outcomes to state the standards in a holistic way. While FETAC is responsible for setting the standards for certification in partnership with course providers and industry, it is the course providers who are responsible for the design of the learning programmes. The duration, content and delivery of learning programmes should be appropriate to the learners’ needs and interests, and should enable the learners to reach the standard as described in the modules. Modules may be delivered alone or integrated with other modules. The development of learners’ core skills is a key objective of vocational education and training. The opportunity to develop these skills may arise through a single module or a range of modules. The core skills include: • taking initiative • taking responsibility for one’s own learning and progress • problem solving • applying theoretical knowledge in practical contexts • being numerate and literate • having information and communication technology skills • sourcing and organising information effectively • listening effectively • communicating orally and in writing • working effectively in group situations • understanding health and safety issues • reflecting on and evaluating quality of own learning and achievement. Course providers are encouraged to design programmes which enable learners to develop core skills.

11.1 Project The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to produce evidence that demonstrates an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes.

Each candidate to direct a short 8-12 minute narrative film. The

project may be originated on a digital video format or on film. Candidates may work from either their own scripts, or from scripts for which they have permission to use. Candidates are required to hold auditions for major roles and a minimum of 2 rehearsals. Candidates will video the auditions and rehearsals and submit a copy of the video as part of the official record, along with an edited and completed version of the film and all relevant paperwork.

• script • script analysis • director’s workscript • shot sheet and storyboards • production design research • director’s journal

The director’s journal will contain all preparatory notes and research for the film project. This evidence will include but is not limited to notes on script and character analysis, notes on casting sessions, rehearsals, preparatory notes for filming, preparatory shot and production design sketches, and any other material which the candidate will deem to have a bearing on the directing process.

In addition, candidates are encouraged to record thoughts,

observations from daily life, perceptions of sound and light, or anything at all that is striking to the candidate and might aid the candidate in developing strategies and visual ideas for directing film.

A variety of media may be incorporated into the journal (eg.

photographic or video evidence of auditions, rehearsals, etc.). Audio or video evidence must be provided on tape or DVD. 11.2 Skills Demonstration Candidates will be observed in class working with actors in a

scene study. Since all preparatory work for the scene will need to be accomplished out-of-class, candidates will compile and submit a director’s journal as partial evidence for this assessment. The journal will include but is not limited to script

and character analysis, notes and observations on the rehearsal process, identification of scene deficiencies and weaknesses and strategies to overcome these problems.

A variety of media may be incorporated into the journal (eg.

photographic or video evidence of auditions, rehearsals, etc.). Audio or video evidence must be provided on tape or DVD. 11.3 Assignment Each student will direct a short 1-3 minute narrative film. The

film may originate on either film or digital video. The brief for the film will be that the story narrative must be communicated visually. Sync sound dialogue is prohibited. Candidates may work from either their own scripts, or from scripts for which they have the permission to use. Candidates will submit an edited and completed version of the film along with all relevant paperwork.
