30 S o r t Introduce/Model Small Groups Read a Rhyme Read “Digging for Treasure,” emphasizing words that contain diphthongs oi or oy (coins, soil, enjoy) and have students locate these words in the poem. Write them in a single column and ask students why one of the words belongs in a second column. (The word enjoy has a different spelling for the sound.) Model Use the whiteboard DVD or the CD word cards. Demonstrate how to sort the words by diphthongs oi and oy. Read each list with students, emphasizing the sound of the diphthongs. Then help students sort and explain their sorts. Practice the Sort Independent/Partner • Have students use the Student Book or whiteboard DVD to read the words and use the grid to sort according to the diphthongs oi and oy. • Have students check and explain their sorts. Apply Independent/Partner/Small Groups • Read aloud the directions on Student Book p. 120. Have students make words by using the provided letters before and after diphthongs oi and oy. Game Allow time for students to play Treasure Hunt, which is on the CD. Little Book Read What Joy Found with students. Have them identify words with oi or oy. Extend the Sort Alternative Sort: Student-Centered Sorts Allow students to work in pairs to devise their own categories for re-sorting the words. When they have re-sorted, give them time to share their sort categories with other students. ELL English Language Learners Review the word cards with students by having them repeat each word after you. Make sure students understand that the vowel sounds in words with oi or oy are pronounced identically. Vocabulary Building Vocabulary Ask students to name other words with oi or oy. If students need prompting, make suggestions from the Bonus Words list. Have students write each word on two cards. Then have pairs of students play Concentration with the Bonus Words. Bonus Words Activity Explain that moist means “slightly wet.” Wet a paper towel and wring it out well, or supply moist towelettes, and let students feel them to get an idea of how moist is different from wet. Ask students to think of things that could be moist, such as sweaty hands, sponges, bathing suits, and laundry. Alternative Sort: Noun, Verb, or Both?Use each word in a sentence. Point out the words that can be both a noun or a verb. (pound, ground, frown, howl, count, growl, crown, plow, cloud, scout, mouth, clown) Let students take over the sort and categorize words as nouns, verbs, or both.

ELL English Language LearnersTo practice pronouncing troublesome words, have students study them within rhyming sets, such as pound, ground, and found. Study one set at a time, calling attention to the spelling pattern.

Bonus Words ActivityEncourage pairs of students to brainstorm or look for additional ou and ow words, making suggestions from the Bonus Words list if needed. Have students write the new words on blank cards to share with the group. Combine all of the cards and re-sort them by ou and ow patterns.

Teacher TipEncourage partners to take turns flashing the cards for a specified number of seconds. Have each reader count the cards that were read correctly and record the final number. See if students can read the cards faster another day.

Introduce/Model Small Groups

• Read a Rhyme Read “New Jeans Now!” Write brown as a column header, and have students name other words in the poem that have the same vowel sound. (how, now, out) Write these words in the column. Ask students why you should move one of the words into a second column. (The word out has a different spelling for the sound.)

• Model Use the whiteboard DVD or the CD word cards. Demonstrate how to sort the words into three categories: words with ou as in sound, words with ow as in brown, and words with different sounds spelled with ou or ow. Then help students sort and explain their sorts.

Practice the Sort Independent/Partner

• Have students use the Student Book or whiteboard DVD to read the words and use the grid to sort according to diphthong ou or ow.

• Have students check and explain their sorts.

Apply Independent/Partner/Small Groups

• Read aloud the directions on Student Book p. 128. Have students make words by using the provided letters before and after diphthongs ou and ow.

• Game Allow time for students to play One Card!, which is on the CD.

Alternative Sort: Beat the ClockHave students try a speed sort. They can time themselves with a stopwatch as they sort the words into categories. After obtaining a baseline speed, have students repeat the sort several times and attempt to beat their own time.

ELL English Language LearnersRead the words and have students repeat them after you. Then distribute the cards. Let students work in pairs to read the words on their cards and use them in sentences. Encourage students to help each other with pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence structure.

Bonus Words ActivityWrite the Bonus Words and help students understand their meanings. Show students how to create word search puzzles using sort words and Bonus Words. On graph paper, make a block of 20 squares by 20 squares. Write the words above the block. Write the words in the block, one letter per square (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) and then fill in the remaining squares in the block with random letters.

Teacher TipYou may wish to have students use a free Internet-based puzzle generator to make word search puzzles for the Bonus Words activity.

Introduce/Model Small Groups

• Read a Rhyme Read “The Lobster Boat” and write claws as a column header. Have students name other words in the poem with the same vowel sound. (dawn, haul, awesome) Write them in the column. Ask students to identify the two spelling patterns for the vowel sound.

• Model Use the whiteboard DVD or the CD word cards. Emphasize the vowel sound in each word and explain that it is not short, long, or a diphthong. Have students assist as you sort into three categories: words with the vowel sound spelled au, words with the vowel sound spelled aw, and the oddball laugh. Help students sort and explain their sorts.

Practice the Sort Independent/Partner

• Have students use the Student Book or whiteboard DVD to read the words and use the grid to sort.

• Have students check and explain their sorts.

Apply Independent/Partner/Small Groups

• Read aloud the directions on Student Book p. 132. Have students make words by using the provided letters before and after aw and au.

• Game Allow time for students to play Vowel Sound Match, which is on the CD.

• Little Book Read Lobster Fishing at Dawn with students. Have them identify words with aw or au.
