Set up in 2008 by Jahnabi and Ashish Phookan, Diphlu River Lodge is a boutique jungle lodge established on the ideology of responsible tourism. Nestled on the banks of the picturesque Diphlu River, which meanders by the celebrated Kaziranga National Park, Diphlu River Lodge is the ideal getaway for a never-before intimacy with the natural world.

Be it spotting an Indian rhinoceros in its natural habitat or appreciating the tribal wisdom of the people of the land, the Lodge offers experiences and itineraries which are suited for individual preferences.Explore the Park with elephant and jeep safaris, watch our in-house local team of craftsmen and weavers in action, revel in the dances of the region with special performances, visit rubber and tea plantations or discover the majesty of the Brahmaputra River and its playful dolphins.

A World Heritage Site, Kaziranga has been a reserve forest for more than a hundred years and lies in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra River, covering some 430 square kilometres. Harbouring the world's largest population of Indian rhinoceros,

Indian elephant and tiger, Kaziranga has a breathtakingly varied landscape with extensive grasslands, densely forested tropical areas,interconnecting streams and numerous small lakes. The Park also plays host to 35 other major mammals in their natural environment and more than 400 species of birds, some of which migrate from as far afieldasas Siberia. The Park is open to visitors generally from November to April, the exact dates varying from year to year.

The Kaziranga National Park is open for visitors generally from November to April, the exact dates varying from year to year. Our trained naturalists and friendly staff will help make the most of all your wilderness plans.

Elephant SafariThisThis is a must for everyone visiting Kaziranga. Foreign nationals can go for elephant ride only at Central range organized by Forest Department. Indian nationals have a choice of selecting one or two ranges for elephant ride. Central range, however, is the best location for an elephant safari. Elephant ride needs to be booked one day before with forest officials. Do let the Manager know when you intend to visit the Park on elephant back.

Jeep SafariOpen jeep safari accompanied by our resident naturalist is possible in all four ranges of the Park. Jeeps used by us are mostly all front facing and with 4WD.

Forest TrekTrekkingTrekking inside the Kaziranga National Park is arranged through special permission and this recommended 2 to 3 hour trek takes you through wooded forests, hills and close to the Brahmaputra river. This is a good area for birdwatching and to spot Hoolock gibbons, otters and more.

Dolphin Boat SafariThe Dolphin Boat Safari takes you on a voyage of discovery on the majestic Brahmaputra River. After sailing to an 11th century Hindu temple, the dolphin spotting begins. The day-long excursion ends with a short visit to the nearby town of Tezpur.

Dance Performance Celebrate the simple joys of life with an exuberant dance performance followed by a bonfire and sumptuous barbecue dinner.

Elephant BathingGet hands-on with the only bathing beauties with one inch thick skin- the Indian elephant. Help wash down a domesticated elephant along with her handler in the refreshing waters of the Diphlu River.

Tea Garden VisitAssam Tea is famous the world over for its strength and aroma and the Lodge offers you the opportunity to visit a nearby tea garden. Watch tea being grown, plucked and processed in pristine natural surroundings.

Village Visit Get a glimpse into the homes and lives of the tribal peoples who inhabit this rich land. The Lodge organises engaging trips to the homesteads of three different tribes in the area; Bodo, Mising and Karbi.

The Konyak Shop Browse for that perfect gift or pick up a memento for yourself at the gift store. All the products are either locally made by an in-house production team of weavers and craftsmen or handpicked from the best of neighbouring regions.

Rubber Plantation WalkJourney on foot to a local rubber production unit accompanied by one of our guides. Your walk will take you through lush rubber forests, scenic vistas and charming village cottages.

Majuli Island Visit the largest riverine island in the world and the seat of Vaishnava culture in Assam. One needs to cross the mighty Brahmaputra River from Neamati / Jorhat by ferry to reach Majuli Island. The great 15th century AssameseAssamese reformer and saint, Shankardeva had set up ‘satras’ or Vaishnavite monasteries. Visit these ‘satras’ and interact with monks. Majuli Island is also known for its rich bird life.

Tezpur ThisThis is an ancient city on the banks of the Brahmaputra River and is the largest of the north-bank towns. In Tezpur you can visit the 6th century Da Parbatia temple ruins with a beautifully carved portal and explore the town, stopping at the Cole Park with its collection of medieval stone carvings. You may also visit the bungalow once lived in by Alexander Bruce, pioneer of the tea industry.

Tocklai Tea Research Station This is the perfect destination for tea lovers. A 2 hours drive from our Lodge. Visit Tocklai Tea for an insight into the latest trends of tea plantation and manufacture; see miniature tea machinery and also a tea museum. Prior permission is required. Do inform our Manager a day in advance if you are keen to visit Tocklai which is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Saturdays and Sundays.

Gibbon SanctuaryNear Mariani / Jorahat is the only sanctuary where 7 primate species of north-east India can be seen. It covers an area of 20.98 sq. km and one is allowed to walk inside the Park. Hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, Malayan giant squirrels and numerous birds can be spotted.

Sivasagar This is the old capital of the Ahoms who ruled Assam for 600 years before the arrival of the British into these parts. There are a number of old monuments built by them; the most significant being the huge man made tank ‘Sivasagar’ from which the town gets its name.

Deo Pahar The ruins of the Deo Pahar temple are located near the town of Numaligarh, an hour’s drive from our Lodge. There are various beautifully carved figures of 10th century Kachari kingdom. Peruse the ruins and take in the grand view it offers of the surrounding tea garden.

Kaziranga Golf Resort A two hour drive from the Lodge, the Kaziranga Golf Resort is an 18 hole golf course nestled amongst tea estates in Jorhat. Tee off to a whole new experience with a host of sports and lifestyle amenities.

The Diphlu River Lodge believes in responsible tourism and in giving back to the environment. This commitment is a real and visible part of the structure and functioning of Diphlu River Lodge. Our cottages and common areas are built with natural materials like bamboo and wood and the Lodge is designed to blend seamlessly into its green surroundings. The Lodge is staffed mostly by local, tribal people and our interiors abound in local handicrafts and materials. We even grow our own organic rice, vegetables and mustard; guests will be able to see the crops growing within the Lodge. Diphlu River Lodge recycles grey water and subscribes to a low light and noise policy.

Diphlu River Lodge is associated with the Ecotourism Society of India and is part of Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT). TOFT is a unique international campaign advocating and supporting responsible tourism as a way to save the tiger, India's wildlife and its wilderness areas.

WeWe also educate local communities on conservation of the environment and the preservation of endangered species. After all, the beauty of the Kaziranga must be protected to endure.
