eroes are ordinary people

who live extraordinary lives.

They are leaders whom

great books might have not been

written about but who have con-

tinued doing great things for fel-

low country men. Pastor Makhale

is one of the greatest leaders

Ratanda has ever seen. A humble

man of valour but a giant with a

rich history that coming genera-

tions shall embrace.

Moruti Makhale (as he is

affectionately known) was born in

Heidelberg’s Old Location

famously known as “Ezindaleni.

Life then was not all that easy

since getting an education was a

struggle on its own. Transforma-

tion and change came around in

1958 when people of Ezindaleni

relocated and came to what we

now know as Ratanda.

Ntate Makhale did his Junior

Certificate during this time at

Charters in Nigel. At the age of 19

he became blessed and was

enlisted with South African

Police. This was during the

apartheid era. Being a police

officer then meant that you were

an enemy.

Moruti Makhale however did not

lose heart. Things were not easy

but when God has a purpose for

your life even the most

complicated situations will seem

like a walk in the park.

In 1973 he obtained his Matric

certificate and blessings of

promotions came pouring in until

he became a Lieutenant and was

the first African to become an

officer at Heidelberg SAPS.

This promotion led him to Springs

Divisional Commissioner and he

was appointed to coordinate the

new dispensation in the post

apartheid era and he headed the

police and monitored that the

police had to go for mental

eva lua t ion d ue to the

’brainwashing’ that took place

during the apartheid era. After

these therapy sessions they would

be able to live normal lives again

and be accepted into their

communities since they have been

labelled enemies. This was a

challenge to Moruti Mokhale

since he himself had to go through

this.

The biggest highlight of his life

was when he was moved to

Germiston where he was

appointment by Nelson Mandela

and De Klerk to initiate calm and

stability in the political strive at

Kathorus where Inkatha Freedom

Party was in cahoots with the

ANC. This had been a very bad

experience for Moruti Makhale

but he survived it all.

He was also involved in projects

which included

building Katho-

r u s R D P

houses, fixing

r o a d s a n d

clinics. This

was a fascinat-

ing project that

helped people

to recover from

their loses and

were restored

their belong-

ings. This had a

long lasting

impact on the

community of

Kathorus and

up to this day

he is not

forgotten.

Visitors from

o v e r s e a s

acknowledged

him for a job

well done and he had to tour them

around this area which had

endured the damage and

vandalism caused by conflict

between the ANC and Inkatha

Freedom Party.

He was then sent to Katlehong

SAPS where he was appointed as

Br igad ier and a Sta t ion

Commander . He rece ived

accolades and praises from

Nelson Mandela once more

because of his leadership skills.

Moruti Makhale retired in 2001

after 30 years of service. Another

l i fe changing exper ience

happened to him when he was at

Sunning Hill Hospital where he

went for a medical evaluation.

During one of his sessions a

physiologist told him that God

wanted to use him elsewhere and

this therapy session was one of its

kind because the psychologist

asked that they pray and God

revealed his calling into ministry

though the psychologist.

Shortly after the retirement and

the incident that he had

experienced at the hospital, he

was appointed to lead the

Apostolic Faith Church . Moruti

Makhale being a man who

believes in education ,further went

on to study Theology and

continued with his ministry.

He has been a pastor for ten years

and as a pastor he has attained a

lot of things even travelling to

other countr ies l ike the

Democratic Republic of Congo.

He receives a lot of invitations to

opening ceremonies and at

schools for motivational talks. To

many he has become a marriage

councillor as well.

He acknowledges that he could

have not have gone through

these experiences on his own.

God gave him a wonderful

beautiful strong woman who at

all times stood firm by his side

Mme Makhale. She had to endure

hardships and sometimes even

phone calls at night when her

hero was needed elsewhere.

Ntate Makhale is a proud father to

Tefo and Nthabiserng Makhale

and many others that see him as a

father to them because in times of

distress he is always willing to

lend a helping hand. He is now

enjoying retirement together with

his wife and has visited overseas

countries like Europe and

Mauritius.

We at Dipapatso salute Moruti

Makhale for his contribution in

making Ratanda and South

Africa what it is today. He is a

true hero, leader and certainly

father of the nation.

Who is to blame for our

misfortunes and failures in life ?

Is it God?

Is it our parents?

Is it our spouses?

Many a times when things don’t go our way we tend to blame everybody else but o u r s e l v e s . Unfortunately, our blaming game is not justifiable since God has granted us the power of choice. Choice is so powerful to an extent that even God Himself does not force anything on us without our consent. From creation and beyond we have been blessed with this powerful gift of choice.

It is common to hear women complain about their abusive relationships. They stay in those relation-ship for years as if they are trapped and there is no way out. All they do is com-plain, pray and hope

that things will change. All the while they are faced with a sim-ple choice of walking away.

Complain-ing about

unemployment will not make us employ-able. If you cant find a job you must just cre-ate your own job. You have a choice to either m o u r n o r d o something about it. Wherever there is a way in there is also a way out.

Workers forever com-plain about their bosses and hate their jobs as a result. However even in that situation they still have a choice. They can either resign from their jobs and look for something else or they have a choice to change their attitude about their bosses. It is about choice at the end of the day.

We fail by choice as we also succeed by choice. Life does not hold a gun against our heads and hold us hostage. Our family background does not define our destina-tion. Our past failures does not seal our fu-ture. We become

products of our own choices.

The Bible tells a story of Cain who killed his brother Abel. As a result of his sin God cursed him to become a vagabond. He was meant to be a wandering wonderer without a home, fam-ily of his own and no future. However, not only did Cain brake the curse by getting married and having children but he also went to an extent of building not just a house but he built a city. The choices he made turned his impossible destina-tion around.

We all have a choice to break limitations in our lives. We might be rejected and written off but we still have a choice to break all those limitations in our lives. At the end of the day you choose to become and you become what you have chosen to become.

Death do come to us all. Advertise your funeral service with Dipapatso

As I grew up in the farms of Free State I used to

hear my elders say that someone has found

favour if a such as person is liked by a white

man.

This possibly meant:

Possible promotion without long service.

New tractors would firstly be driven by

that individual before they can be given to

others.

Being left in-charge of everything when the

white man is not around.

His house would be built with bricks and

would be bigger than others.

His children would be allowed to play with

white children including their toys.

All these benefits were the works of what my

elders called favour. In this case those who

were not favoured were subjected to hard la-

bour, all sorts of curses and slavery.

Then I hated this FAVOUR THING because I

always fought with white children and they

reported me to their parents and as a result my

beloved grandfather would punish me because I

could not get favour.

I grew up longing to know what favour could

actually be since it looked like it is a thing that

makes life easy.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines

favour as:

An act of kindness beyond what is due or

usual and

Unfair preferential treatment.

Let’s look at Favour In Action from a biblical

point of view.

Ecclesiastes 2:26 (To the sinner He gives the

task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand

it over to the one who pleases God)

This simply means the poor sinner will wake up

early in the morning, do all the planning, work

even when it’s raining and end up laid on a

stretcher to hospital due to fatigue all in the

name of gathering and storing up wealth.

Remember that in Genesis 3:19 God said to the

man: (By the sweat of your brow you will eat

your food)

God comes, and take all that this sinner has

worked for, for the rest of his life and give it to

this one whom He favours.

Is it really fair? NO, it’s not fair but that’s how

FAVOUR operates. To be honest, favour is

very selfish, it doesn’t care about other people,

and it only cares about the one that is directed

to. You may have years of experience at your

workplace but others would come become your

superiors.

Your business of years will not do well while

others who started yesterday would have their

businesses booming. Favour has one source

only which is GOD.

He gives it to the ones who please Him

(Ecclesiastes 2:26). You may ask how. I don’t

know because no one deserves it

Being a born again Christian doesn't automati-

cally make you qualify to be favoured, there are

millions of Christians who still lack favour

from God and some are favoured even when

they are not saved, the likes of King Nebuchad-

nezzar in the Bible (Daniel 1&2)

Just look around you, you’ll see who is fa-

voured and who is not. ARE YOU FA-

VOURED? Find your favour from God in his

word.

In the political circle there

are only three groups: those

who make things happen,

those who watch when

things happen and those

who wonder why things

are happening.

It doesn’t take a rocket

scientist to realise that the

ANC Youth League is mak-

ing things happen in South

Africa. They have always

been vocal about what

direction they think this

country should take. They

called for the nationalisa-

tion of mines, a call that

ruffled a few feathers within

the ANC.

The Youth League’s historic

economic freedom march to

Pretoria served as a warning

that there is a revolution

brewing. The youth are fed

up with the rate of

unemployment and lack of

opportunities for South

Africans. No amount of

suspension of their leaders

will ever change this.

Malema might be suspended

but the real problems that he

was addressing with the

Youth League still stands.

It is really shocking to see

the Youth League stance on

the change in economic

policies causing this

discomfort within the ANC.

All that the Youth League is

doing is to further

the cause of the Free-

dom Charter drafted

in Kliptown in 1955

that clearly stated

that the people shall

share in the wealth of

the country. It is

evident that the ANC

is dragging its feet

when coming to

taking the wealth of

the country back to

the people.

All the while the SACP and

Cosatu remain mum and

just watch when

t h i n g s a r e

h a p p e n i n g .

S A C P a n d

Cosatu should

have joined the

Youth League in

pressurising the

government to

speed up the

e c o n o m i c

policies that will

benefit all. As

f o r t h e

W o m e n ’ s

League they

seem to be just

wondering why

things are happening.

I understand that the Youth

League is autonomous but

not outside the ANC

however they are bold to

speak up even if it means

facing expulsion. Chris

Hani and Joe Slovo must be

turning in their graves to see

what the SACP has become.

As Julius Malema said that

the gloves are off, its evident

that the ANC shall have to

reconsider their economic

policies and fast.

A clause from the Freedom

Charter in 1955 in Kliptown.

THE PEOPLE SHALL SHARE

IN THE COUNTRY'S

WEALTH! The benefit national wealth of our coun-try, the heritage of all South Africans, shall be restored to the people; The mineral wealth beneath the soil, the banks and the monopoly industry shall be transferred to the ownership of the people as a whole; All other industry and trade shall be controlled to assist the well-being of the people; All people shall have equal rights to trade where they choose, to manufac-ture and to enter all trades, crafts and professions.

There are people who can walk

away from you. And hear me

when I tell you this! When people

can walk away from you: let them

walk. I don't want you to try to

talk another person into staying

with you, loving you, calling you,

caring about you, coming to see

you, staying attached to you. I

mean hang up the phone.

When people can walk away from

you let them walk. Your destiny is

never tied to anybody that left.

The bible said that, "They came

out from us that it might be made

manifest that they were not for us.

For had they been of us, no doubt

they would have continued with

u s . " [ 1 J o h n 2 : 1 9 ]

People leave you because they are

not joined to you. And if they are

not joined to you, you can't make

them stay. Let them go. And it

doesn't mean that they are a bad

person, it just means that their part

in the story is over. And you've

got to know when people's part in

your story is over so that you don't

keep trying to raise the dead.

You've got to know when it's

dead. You've got to know when

i t ' s o v e r .

Let me tell you something. I've got

the gift of good-bye. It's the tenth

spiritual gift, I believe in good-

bye. It's not that I'm hateful, it's

that I'm faithful, and I know what-

ever God means for me to have

He'll give it to me. And if it takes

too much sweat I don't need it.

Stop begging people to stay. Let

t h e m g o ! !

If you are holding on to something

that doesn't belong to you and was

never intended for your life, then

you need to...LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to past hurts

and pains... LET IT GO!!!

If someone can't treat you right,

love you back, and see your

w o r t h . . . L E T I T G O ! ! !

If someone has angered you ...

L E T I T G O ! ! !

If you are holding on to some

thoughts of evil and revenge....

L E T I T G O ! ! !

If you are involved in a wrong

relationship or addiction ... LET

I T G O ! ! !

If you are holding on to a job that

no longer meets your needs or

talents . . LET IT GO!!!

If you have a bad attitude... LET

I T G O ! ! !

If you keep judging others to make

yourself feel better... LET IT

G O ! ! !

If you're stuck in the past and God

is trying to take you to a new level

in Him... LET IT GO!!!

If you are struggling with the

healing of a broken relationship....

L E T I T G O ! ! !

If you keep trying to help someone

who won't even try to help them-

s e l v e s . . L E T I T G O ! ! !

If you're feeling depressed and

stressed ... LET IT GO!!!

If there is a particular situation

that you are so used to handling

yourself and God is saying "take

your hands off of it," then you

need to... LET IT GO!!!

Let the past be the past. Forget the

former things. GOD is doing a

new thing for 2010!!! LET IT

G O ! ! !

Get Right or Get Left .. think

about it, and then LET IT GO!!!

arketing is one of the main tools that enhances growth of a n y b u s i n e s s . M o s t

businesses view marketing as simply a fancy advertisement or a new company catalog. It’s only a few that realize that marketing is certainly the

most important aspect of business growth. A successful marketing

strategy can mean the difference between business won or lost and

ultimately whether a company is able to connect with its customers.

In order to increase market share, a business must have a solid marketing plan to capitalize on the leads generated through those marketing efforts. So, how does marketing help your business in front of customers? When it comes to understanding

marketing, it’s important to look at t h e how and the why. What does

your business do and how your business can best get this message out to its customers? This is the ultimate message

and purpose of marketing and we are going to look at Print Advertising as one of the tools of marketing: Business advertising is a science and an art. Most

businesses often miss the fundamentals of advertising. Regardless of the size of your business an understanding of

the concept of advertising can reap huge rewards. Most businesses budget an

average of 5 to 7% of a business gross sales for advertising and in most cases this is collation to a location of your business and how much rent you are paying. (Contact

me for detailed info of this). Here are a two things you need to take into consideration before rushing into advertising your business:

You will need to

introspect your business target market (thus the radius of

buyers) before you choose any type of media you want to use

for advertising.

Consider the distribution radius

of the type of media that you want to advertise in. Does the medium/newspaper reach your target market? (That’s the main question here)

Let me share with you some of the most concepts of a successful print advertising: Use One Message: A high response rate ad usually

conveys a single message. Your small business advertising needs to quickly communicate its core message in 3 seconds or less. Using too much info and products can distract interest and attention from readers and/or buyers.

Advertise Frequently: Advertising now and then plants memory of your business in the mind

of buyers. Most folks only advertise once in a while and expect the Print Newspaper or medium to bring

customers to their business doorstep and blame the medium if no-one knocks on their door. It important to advertise your business constantly. This may seem to be a waste of money as many think it that way, but you will be shocked and surprised at

the good end results. Be Easy to Contact: Your advert should have all full contact informa-tion such as phone and fax numbers,

company physical address including email address and a website if you

have one. It seems simple but is forgotten by most companies. Be

everywhere. Create Curiosity: Successful business advertising does not only sell a product or service to customers you already have. It also need to build a new customer database. Create ads

that generate interest and make the customer want more information. Use the AIDA formula: Let your ad b r i n g A T T E N T I O N , c r e a t e INTEREST, build DESIRE, and force the buyer to take ACTION to come

and knock at your business door. Remember: Having a poor response is not the Newspaper or medium's fault. Often the problem is the message. Business advertising is not a quick fix solution

to marketing your business. It takes planning, testing and constant exposure to have an impact on your small business

Print advertising can do more than just bring Customers. You will be shocked to read below what print ads

can do to your business: Print Advertising Can Make You Look Professional For your prospects, your advertising is your business. The level of profes-

sionalism in your marketing materials indicates how professional your busi-ness is. And if you have better mar-keting materials than the competition, your prospects will assume that yours is the better business

Do not let your advert look too clus-tered with much info and products as this will look like you are not ready to spend much on just advertising. Peo-ple like to do business with profes-sional businesses or organizations. Professionalism leads to trust and

added value. Make sure your ads pre-sent you in the best light. Remember, your print ad is the first impression

you make. Print Ads Can Set Appropriate

Customer Expectations Example: “We are the only No. 1 affordable Electronic Shop in town” Here you are implying that ONLY YOU have cheap electronic products and do ing th is you a re set t i ng expectations by telling the customer

to expect to start paying for your services at very low prices. (NB: Ensure that everything you say is that you customers will get as deception may damage creditability of your business)

Big Ads can make your company look bigger than it really is A larger and more professional print advertisement with multiple phone lines, addresses, e-mails, etc. will make your business look bigger than

it really is. People trust larger, more established businesses and if you want corporate business or larger

jobs, you need to have the biggest, best print ad around. Grabbing all these concepts and putting them into good use can

make your print advertising work.

Mxit ,2go,twitter and facebook to mention a few are the

most popular social networks amongst teens . Gone are

the days when the streets would be filled with teens

playing „‟mogusha‟‟ or „‟kgati‟‟.Nowadays go to a

teens room and you will mostly find him or her typing

on his or her P.C or CELLPHONE, Staying connected to

the world out there is just a click away. The world is at

fingertips. Mobile phones that have internet services

make it easy for teens to be online on social networks so

they really don‟t need computers. Mxit is the cheapest

known chatroom. You can text a message for less than 5

cents.

These social networks have an effect on teens when they

are in classrooms because you will find them chatting

even when there is a teacher in class and also the lan-

guage they use when chatting they now also use when

they write essays or letters. We use the abbreviations we

use when chatting in our school work e.g cool-kwl, for-

4, friends-frinds, good-gud etc.

The thing about this social networks they can get addic-

tive though I have never heard of an organisation that

deals with the addicts. The most common sign of an ad-

dict is whenever they speak they use “lingo” they use in

the social network e.g when they ask the person how is

she doing they would say hud and when they want to

laugh they would say lol.

On the other hand social networking is not such a bad

thing because teens can improve their typing skills, it is

not expensive and if lucky they can get to chat with their

celebrity role models and get to know the everyday life

of the person they look up to.

On the educational side I think it is of no use teaching

teens how to write letters rather teach them how to write

emails at least or teach them how to use the internet.

Ever since these social networks came into the picture I

have never seen a teen at the post office or receiving a

letter and I just wonder why.

The yookos center has been launched in Ratanda. The pur-

pose of the center is to empower technologically illiterate

members of the community who have consented to be regis-

tered on Yookos to get the basic knowledge and pratical

experience of basic emailing and internet navigation. The

center will create email addresses for all yookos subscribers

and provide a platform for them to socialize on the yookos

site.

The center will be open weekdays between 12h00 and

16h00 at the Ratanda Public Library. Yookos also provides

a platform for Businesses, organisations and influential per-

sonalities like Pastor Chris Oyakhilome PhD to promote

their entities and materials.

Bontle Nqubane

For many years of studying you have been counting

yourself down up to this day. All these years you have

been asking yourself when are you going to get done with

school. When will you get out of that uniform? Well, today

your questions have been answered. Today is your day.

All those years of teachers running after you, begging you

to do your work are over and done away with. Today you

are becoming a statistic. You are increasing the population

of the unemployed.

You are on the verge of being independent. You are about

to experience the real world outside of school. Your

student days are over. Unfortunately, it is not everybody

who has planned and prepared a way to the future.

Now is the time to put to practise everything you have

learnt over the years. As you walk out of the school prem-

ises never forget where you come from. Walk out of the

gates to walk into change. Walk out knowing that you are

to make a difference in your family, community and in

your country. You have without doubt obtained the key to

unlock your future.

Bontle was a Grade 12 learner in New Ratanda

Secondary School in 2011.

It is that time of

the year when

end year results

will be issued in

schools around

South Africa. For

some learners

this will mean

jubilation while

for some it will

bring sadness

and hurt. It is

during this sea-

son when a

whole lot of

learners who did

not perform well

in their studies

commit suicide.

It is at times sad to see how some learners play truant

throughout the year. Never take their school work seri-

ously and when they get their end year results commit

suicide. Teenagers need to know the principle of reaping

what you have sown is a reality.

On the other hand there are learners who are hard work-

ers but due to circumstances above them find themselves

failing at the end of the year. Some learners deal with

family problems beyond comprehension. This is under-

standable but it does not mean that failure must lead

them to committing suicide.

Failing a few subjects does not make one a total failure

in life. The word FAIL should simply mean First At-

tempt In Learning. If in 2011 a learner could not make it

through to the next grade there is still 2012. What you

couldn‟t do in 2011 you can still do even better in 2012.

Failing hurts but it must not lead to a point of death .

Most teenagers can learn that talking to someone helps.

Rather than bottling your feelings inside find someone

you can trust and talk to them.

against

violence on

women and children.

From The Youth Desk: Due to the ever increasing violence

on women and young children, So-

cial Crime Prevention unit together

with the Youth Desk have decided

to come together with many other

stakeholders, NGO‟s and together

we have come up with a project that

will make people aware that we can

combat these acts by coming to-

gether as a united front and discour-

age perpetrators at all cost.

On the 2nd of December 2011 a

march will commence from the

Multi Purpose Hall where the

Ratanda Community will assemble,

open in prayer and then march

down to the Ratanda Police Station.

During this March pre scholars will

hold up banners that will show case

the rights of women and children.

Learners from schools will board

buses and go to Shalimar Taxi Rank

where the march will start once

more and all will be heading for the

Heidelberg Magistrate Court to

hand over a peace memorandum.

We therefore urge all community

members to join us and participate

because TOGETHER WE CAN DO

MORE!

New Ratanda Secondary School has fi-

nally been named. The name New

Ratanda was never an official name of

the school. The school was formed as a

merger of two schools Kgoro ya Thuto

and Kudung. This merger sparked a con-

flict that took years to resolve.

A series of meetings was held to try and

resolve issues that overshadowed this

school in Ratanda Extension 23. Several

names were suggested for the school

which never materialised. All the while

the struggle continued.

Finally, an amicable solution has been

found as the school is now named Kgoro

ya Thuto Secondary School. The

School‟s Governing Body endeavour has

paid off as the matter of the name can be

laid to rest ( at least we hope)

There is no time for crime.

There is no time to stand in the corners

But the is a time to stand and shine

Tlou ha e hlolwe ke morwalo wa yona

Let us be proud of being human beings

Let us rise and shine

Raise our voice and say

“yes” I am proud to be an African

“yes” I am proud to be a human being

Some people stand in street corners

With posts written

“no job!,

“no money!,

“no food!” hanging on their necks

With no hope for the future they stand

Let us rebuild our minds

Let us work together towards success

Remember; moketa ho tsoswa o itekang

I tried …

I tried being the best but I couldn‟t resist

I tried playing innocent but I got caught

They call me names but I don't focus

They run around I call them stupid

They try convicting me but I loose

They try helping me out but again I smash!

This is supposed to be my time

This should be my light

This is supposed to be my dream

This is how I should be living , free like a

bird

My tries seem worth nothing but sorrow

My tries seem to be failing by the day

My tries kindly get crushed by my pride

My time is worth my tries

I tried…
