Milled knurls of top quality

Objects that people touch are always evaluated very carefully. Forthe combination of the sense of sight and touch influences theexpectation of quality considerably.

In terms of producing high-quality knurled surfaces, Swarovski OptikKG has set worldwide standards of quality with the QUICK knurlingtool systems. Because more than 45 years ago our techniciansdeveloped this highly precise technology for the self-production ofoptical and fine-mechanical instruments, and thus also enhanced thequality of these products from the standpoint of design. This alsomade it possible to establish a clear demarcation to the products of“low price manufacturers“.

Since interest in this system increased so strongly in the followingyears, it was decided to put this technology onto the market in-dependently under the name of QUICK Knurling Tools. While theworld patents from that time have run out in the meantime, the qualitative lead has become even greater. For the secret lies in the exactness of production.

This begins already in the design and construction stage, for the toolholder and knurling tool directly interact with each other. Depending on the material requirement, desired service life and specified surface finish of the knurl, the knurling cutters are produced in a not coated or coated version.

Complete systems are offered, designed and optimized by expertsfor all types of machine tools – from the small mechanic’s lathe toCNC multiple-spindle auto-lathes or machining centers. Particularlywith expensive lathes, where it’s a question of long-term mainten-ance of the machine geometry, one likes to take advantage of thecutting of knurls, because in comparison to pressure-type tools amuch lower processing pressure is required.

Our A Series tools, available at the market since 2004, are flexibleto use. They can be used on all turning lathes and machining cent-res on main- and sub spindle. The modular construction systemfrom A Series replaces a multitude of single tools.

As the market leader, we place great value on customer service andcounseling. We offer technically perfect, fast and reason-ably pri-ced service. With the certified milling systems of the trademark QUICK, in conformance with DIN 82 all solid metalsand almost all plastics can be given straight, cross, diamond andspiral knurls. Models can be supplied to the world market on thebasis of all relevant standards and regulations.

Classification of QUICK knurlsaccording to the DIN 82 standard

Straight knurlThis knurl corresponds to the form designated in DIN 82 RAA as a“knurl with axially parallel channels“.

Spiral knurlDesignated according to DIN 82 as a “RBL left knurl” and “RBRright knurl”. With QUICK knurling tools it is possible to produce knurls with a 15° or 30° left- or right-hand spiral.

Cross knurlThese do not correspond to the form known in DIN 82 as RKE“cross knurl, tips raised”. They are differentiated by the fact that the cross of the pyramids is at an angle of 45° to the workpieceaxis.

Diamond knurlThis knurl corresponds to the form standardized under DIN 82 RGEas “left/right knurl, tips raised”. The pyramids intersect each otherat an angle of 30° to the workpiece axis.

Types of QUICK knurling cutters

QUICK knurling cutters are manufactured from a specially develo-ped high-speed steel.

The individual production steps are carried out with the greatestprecision on state-of-the-art machine tools. Heat treatment takes place in electronically controlled hardening plants under constantquality control conditions.

Of the available knurling cutters the type should be used that bestsuits the requirements specified for the knurled surface.

Milled tooth flanksThis is the standard type that can be used in the produced qualityfor most applications. A very good result can be achieved with thistype, especially for cross and diamond knurl patterns.

Ground and coated tooth flanksThis type achieves a longer service life in comparison to the typewith only ground tooth flanks. For optical demanding knurling surfaces it is recommended to use the ground and coated version.

Tool presetting

All QUICK knurling tools suitable for use on CNC machines can be measured optically with a special setting gauge on presettingdevices. This setting gauge is delivered together with every CNC knurling tool.

Presetting procedure for KF knurling tools

1. Detach the knurling cutters and bushes2. Set the scale ring to the smallest diameter3. Attach the setting gauge on the clamping part4. Set the center line with the spindle which is integrated in

the shank5. Now the X and Z values can be read on the presetting device

The measured Z value is the start of the knurl, not the collisiondimension. With A1/KF tools the measured X value is taken overwith a workpiece diameter of 5mm without a correction value, A2/KFtools with 8mm. Depending on the workpiece diameter the figures given in the table must be added to the X values. With this value, the knurling cutters stand about 0.2-0.3mm over the diameter to be knurled. The exact setting of the tool must be made on the machine.

Knurling with QUICK knurling tools

A factor to be heeded regarding all QUICK knurling tools is that itis not possible to knurl completely on a shoulder due to the inclination of the knurling cutters.

Protection facing on the knurling wheels

When knurling hard workpieces it may happen that a knurling wheelloses teeth. Grinding a 45° facet can improve the durability of thewheel. This applies only to models KF and STR!!! The drawing onthe left hand side shows which knurling wheels may have facets. 32mm and 42 mm Ø knurling wheels are already produced with facets.

Depending on direction of rotation of workpiece only one knur-ling wheel with facet may be used.

The start of the knurl is of decisive importance for the quality of the knurl.

Illustration 1The beginning of the knurl should be with a width of max. 1.5 mm.The knurling depth may not be started before the diameter whichshould be knurled. The depth setting is equal to the pitch from theknurling cutter and should be done with the infeed rate of 0.05 to0.10 mm/rev. A dwell time of 2 to 3 seconds is necessary beforeswitching on the longitudinal feed.

Illustration 2With the STR and Stabil models, starting the knurl radially is notpossible. With these tools it is necessary to first cut a centering stepon the workpiece. For knurling cutter pitches up to 0.6 mm it suffices to machine a 30°facet with a width of about 1.5 pitches.

Illustration 3If pitches larger than 0.6 mm are knurled with the STR models, a cen-tering step must be machined on the workpiece with a width ofabout 2 pitches and a depth of 1/2 pitch. The feed rate on this centering step is rapid (0.2 to 0.3 mm/rev)and the longitudinal feed is switched on after a dwell time of 2 to 3seconds.
