Motivation
• To provide guidance for students in the planning of their study (lots of freedom in Bachelor phase)
• To improve the communication between tutor and students
• To come to grips with the development of academic skills
• To provide archival and show case facilities• No specific pedagogical aims

Conditions and choices
• 1000 first year students, 150 tutors– No specific web-editing skills expected
– Portfolio is NO show case of these skills
• Database system with Internet access– Authorization through WebCT
– Stand-alone, form-based system
– Fixed lay-out in faculty style
• Student is owner of the portfolio– Student decides on access

• General information• Study planning• Academic skills• Products• Reflections (optionally hidden) • Appointments (optionally hidden)• Tutor page (always hidden)• Other activities

Access and privacy
• Access options– Everybody (in the system) – Individuals in the faculty (with different roles)– Individuals outside the faculty (password protection)– Per page (reflections and appointments)
• Tutor page– Accessible for student and tutor only– Only tutor has privilege to write

Portfolio introduction
• Students– Immediately in the first week of studies– Clarify aims and role– Explanation how to use the system– Demonstrate embedding in WebCT
• Tutors– Provide similar introduction – Motivate to look into and to use the portfolios– Feedback is prerequisite for success

First evaluation
• Easy introduction for both tutors and students• Very few requests for help at helpdesk
• The attitude of tutors is decisive for success• Study planning and products come first
• Current focus on discussions of portfolio assessment, notably academic skills
