it is important for us to differentiate internal beauty and external beauty.

B. People choose their life-long partner based on physical beauty rather than

inner beauty

C. More and more people undergo plastic surgery

III. Inner Beauty

A. Beauty that is invisible, intangible, and only can be detected based on

feeling.

B. The real beauty in our mind, it act without our consciousness.

C. It is the powerful tool that prepare our “road”.

Beauty, it is a notoriously noun in our mind. Living things in the world especially

humans are having two types of beauty which are external beauty and inner beauty.

Beauty can actually affect us in an unlimited variety of ways. (Scruton, 2009). I believe

that people usually more emphasized external beauty rather than inner beauty. So, what

is the actual meaning of internal beauty and external beauty? The denotative meaning of

the internal beauty is the beauty that is not physically visible and however, external

beauty is the beauty that is visible, tangible and people tend to use it to attract other

people. Hence, I am going to talk about the difference between external beauty and inner

beauty.

External beauty as I mentioned in the introduction, it is the beauty that based on

your physical appearance. People are focusing more on physical beauty because it is

important to us. According to Sonia Sharma (2015), people around us will actually judge

you based on your physical beauty with or without your consciousness. It is nothing

wrong because it is the nature of human. Additionally, external beauty also acts a giant

role in determining the personality of people and how confident you feel about yourself.

Newcastle University (2009) explained that every student must dress in formal during

their presentation. The purpose of dressing formal is because physical appearance is the

first impression that will influence the audiences. Hence, it can be proven that the reason

why we need to dress in formal style when we have an interview for our job, it is because

the external beauty literally not only affect the perspective of the interviewer but also can

build up our confidence. Majority of female will feel more confident and high self-

esteem when they knew they looked beautiful.

Getting more and more people are focusing on their physical appearance, even

when they are choosing their life-long partner. Physical attractiveness can influence the

life outcomes and how individual are perceived by others. (Ricciardelli & White, 2011).

People are usually judge people based on appearance. Normally people assume that

obese people will have certain characteristics such as laziness, sloppiness and stupidity.

Females are more prefer or desire to choose their boyfriend or husband based on their

muscular chest and shoulder, hair style, tallness, eyes, flat stomach, slimness, and

buttocks. (Mahfood, 2014). On the other hands, males are also prefer to have their

girlfriend or wife which have small waist, long legs, sexy eyes, luscious lips, symmetrical

face, and a long and soft hair. (Capital lifestyle, 2012). Thus, based on the information

that stated above, males and females are more concentrated on their outer beauty because

they want to attract their opposite sex. This normally will happen in teenagers and young

adult because their hormones run rampantly. For example, a male teenager or young adult

addicted to sport because they want to train themselves so that they can overcome the

“washboard” on their body. Their purpose is to enhance their outer beauty so that they

can look more charm and attractive. However, same attitude also applied by female

teenager and young adult. They will start to purchase cosmetic products in order to

enhance their physical beauty so that they can look more beautiful and good-looking.

Plastic surgery is one of the notorious ways to beautify ourselves. Plastic surgery

plays an important role in reconstructing damaged skin due to birth disorder, burns, and

accident. Nowadays, many teenagers are focusing on their outer beauty rather than inner

beauty. Seven thousands teenagers had undergo cosmetic surgery in America. (Bush,

2002). Based on the research, teenagers are more likely to take the risk to undergo

cosmetic surgery on their face just because they want to look beautiful and being

accepted by other people. The cosmetic surgery included breast reconstruction, breast

reduction, cleft lip and palate surgery, hand surgery, scar revision, skin cancer removal,

and tissue expansion. (American society of plastic surgeons, 2015). People that undergo

plastic surgery is because they want to show “the best” to others. According to

Meyersohn, Mcfadden, and Mccarthy (2009), Michael Jackson had undergo several

plastic surgery just because he dislike his look especially his nose and the colour of his

skin. Therefore, the outer beauty is important for the celebrities because they care about

the perspectives of other people toward their look. A lot of celebrities are willing to take

the risk and spend their money to undergo the plastic surgery. As a result, the importance

of external beauty sometimes will literally blind other people.

Besides talking about the superficial physical beauty, inner beauty is also

remarkable. Inner beauty also known as true beauty, the beauty that is from your heart

and mind rather than from your look and appearance. For instant, many of us have said

the “original” of Michael Jackson is better than after he did the plastic surgery.

Furthermore, the abilities of a person also considered as inner beauty of that person.

Before Michael Jackson did the plastic surgery and after he did, the amount of his fans

still remain unchanged but increased. The reason for this phenomena is because people

are interested in his abilities and personalities and not his physical appearance. Michael

Jackson has the talent in dancing and singing. People love his song and think that his

song is touching and meaningful. Additionally, he created a theme park called Neverland,

and the initial purpose of Neverland is to gather the people with love and playful spirit.

Michael Jackson hopes that families can get closer without the gap with each other after

visited Neverland. (Anonymous, 2012). Michael Jackson is the only vocalist who has

this type of spirit and mind to gather people together. Inner beauty is crucial because it

represented our unique personality. Everyone know that Michael Jackson has an

unhappy childhood, and he hopes that every children in the world will have a

unforgettable and memorable childhood. This idea really touched a lot of people

especially his fans. And we also know that, inner beauty is much important than outer

beauty.

Taylor Swift is one of the well-known vocalists in the world today. She can

become so extraordinary not only because of her talent in singing and creating music but

also because of her kindly heart. According to Respers (2015), Taylor Swift had donate

50,000 dollars to a 13-month-old baby with cancer. People believe that the action of

Taylor Swift is not intentional because there are so many rich people and wealthy vocalist

in the world, but why only Taylor Swift willing to spend and donate a huge amount of

money to that family? Internal beauty is based on your heart and mind, if you feel like

you want to act, you will automatically act without consciousness. It is the invisible

power of internal beauty. Not only that, she also have visited Jordan Nickerson in

hospital. (Corriston, 2014). Jordan Nickerson is a seven years old cancer patient. He

admires Taylor Swift so much and hopes that Taylor Swift can sing and dance in front of

him. The amazing and marvelous part is Taylor Swift made it real. She went to the

hospital with her digital guitar and sang the song in front of Jordan Nickerson. Her

action actually rejuvenated Jordan Nickerson and he became better than before after

Taylor Swift visited him. Because of Taylor Swift’s kind-hearted, it brings a lot of power

to the boy. Many patients with cancer in hospital hope that their admired actors or artist

can go and visit them because they need support and motivation. (Brown, 2005). But

unfortunately, only a few of actors or artists will actually care about their wish, because

they think that time is much important than a wish of their fans. In other word, they will

feel it is a waste of time to go to the hospital to visit their fans. Inner beauty is the “angel”

in our heart and our mind. It always guide us to do the right things and to help people

when people need our hand to support them. Inner beauty can only detect by our feeling.

A person that possesses a good inner beauty will usually have many of friends, because

people are more likely to befriend with a person that has a good attitude. Unlike physical

beauty, inner beauty can beautify you indirectly and it is free of charge. Helping people

is always a good example of inner beauty because when you act a kind action, you will

actually feel happy and self-fulfilled. These little actions will slowly beautify you even

though you are not good-looking but people will know that you have a kindly heart

eventually. Try to imagine, a very pretty and good-looking girl always used sarcasm

when she communicates with others, people may attracted by her at the first time based

on her appearance but people will slowly reject and discriminate her because of her

attitude and the way she talks. The way we talk to other also included in our inner beauty.

If the manager of an organisation keep blaming and scolding the workers, definitely the

workers will lose their motivation and passion to work with the manager. Therefore,

inner beauty actually prepares the road for us indirectly. It can be a “convenient” road or

it also can be a “suffer” road.

Lord Shaftesbury said “The most natural beauty in the world is honesty and moral

truth”. Honesty is one of the parts that contained in the inner beauty’s department.

Honesty also plays an important role in our life. If you are honest, people around you

will believe in what you said and rely on you. Honesty is like a glass, if the glass is

broken, it cannot get back the original appearance even you putted a lot of effort on it.

Honesty related with guilty indirectly. Guilty is crucial because it is the most powerful

tool to correct ourselves. For example, if you cheated in your exam and you get the

highest mark in the class, when the teacher announced the higher mark is you, you will

generally feel guilty and ashamed. And because of this feeling, it taught us to avoid

repeating our mistakes again. Cheating is against the inner beauty even if there is a

reasonable to cheat someone else.

In my opinion, I personally think that inner beauty is more important than external

beauty. It is can prove by using an example that we always used in our daily life. When

we purchase a beverage, we will generally observe the most attractive cover of the

beverage. But if the content of the beverage that you bought because of the its attractive

cover, is not match with the taste that you want, you will definitely dissatisfy with the

product. By using the example, we can note that the actual beauty which is the internal

beauty is much more important than the physical appearance, because what we need is

the content and the taste of the beverage rather than the cover of the beverage.
