  • Background: Diego Velasquez was born on June 6, 1599 in Seville, Spain.

    A Spanish painter in the court of King Philip IV.

    He was an artist during the Baroque period.

    Painted mostly still life, portraits, and religious pieces.

  • King Philip IV:

  • Early Life: Juan Rodrguez de Silva and Jernima Velzquez.

    Velzquez was educated by his parents.

    Received good training in language and philosophy, but showed an early gift for art.

  • Juan Rodrguez de Silva:

  • Francisco de Herrera: A vigorous painter who disregarded the Italian influence of the early Seville school.

    Velzquez studied art with him for one year.

    He learned to use different paint brushes with long bristles from Herrera.
