Glenfield, as the AVK Group competence centre for control valves, led the research and development of the series 859 range of diaphragm control valves. They are now responsible for the manufacture and global distribution via our sister companies worldwide.

High levels of water that has been produced but “lost” before it reaches the customer through leaks, theft or metering inaccuracies are a source of unwanted cost to the water utilities.

From a public health and drinking water quality perspective, water losses need to be minimised in order to avoid the risk of drinking water contamination in the distribution network. When supplying potable water to populated areas, the water quality required must meet high standards.

These standards also apply to the equipment being used to deliver the water such as pipes, pumps, isolation valves, automatic control valves and filtration systems. Installation of a potable water system is an investment and requires a full understanding of the dynamics within the system.

Automatic control valves such as pressure reducing, pressure sustaining, constant flow and pressure relief, control and optimise the systems performance. These can be used to provide optimum pressure and flow conditions for a system, resulting in:- • Less leakage • Less wastage • Less impact on the environment• Less disruption to consumers • Improved financial savings to water

The new concept comprises of a compact pilot system using only three major components which are manufactured from high quality and durable material (AISI 316 Stainless Steel) as standard. These three major components are the distribution block, hydraulic control block and filter system, which are shown and described in more detail within the brochure.

The pilot system design with its regulator is fitted to incorporate easy adjustment capable of precise settings. The diaphragm reacts to sensitive pressure changes within the chamber of the actuator. The sensing line and other

fittings are made from AISI 304 as standard with the option of being supplied in AISI 316 stainless steel.

• Modular Design: Interconnecting and interchangeable parts, comprising of three major components supplied in AISI 316 stainless steel as standard, minimising spare parts. Can be altered for different applications, using specific: Single Function Modules or Multi Function Modules.

• Functionality: The automatic control valve can easily be altered to suit different functions with additional option of replacing the control module, original valve can be used.

• External Fittings: AISI 304 stainless steel as standard for all the fittings with an available option of being supplied in AISI 316 stainless steel.

With its unique modular design, the Series 859 pilot system can be easily altered to fit many applications with no need to purchase a replacement valve.

The S859 pilot benefits from superior design including the high capacity filter, which can be easily cleaned whilst the valve remains online. The hydraulic control block offers extremely high levels of accuracy and will maintain stable control despite challenging dynamic changes. There are also two functions on order to control both the valve opening and closing speed.

High quality components are stainless steel AISI 316 (A4) to ensure high performance and long asset life.

MODuLAR CONsTRuCTIONThe pilot system is of modular type with balanced pressure design, which is used to compensate for changes in water pressure, providing stable pressure. The base of all control pilots is the hydraulic control block. Single or multiple function modules can be easily connected.

OPERATION

A restriction orifice inside of the “Distribution through the pilot system Block” located upstream of the control chamber, will limit the flow rate. A restriction orifice located just downstream of the filter will limit the flow rate. The valve will open if the flow rate allowed through the control pilot located downstream of the control chamber is greater than the flow rate allowed through the restriction orifice.

Taking “A” as the area of seat, the diaphragm area is approximately “C”. “P1” acts on area “A”. “B” is the diaphragm area that is exposed to “P2”.

The pilot controls the main valve by controlling the pressure.

Hydraulic operated, diaphragm actuated globe valve.

The stem of the diaphragm assembly is fully guided into the seat, from top and bottom within the valve diaphragm assembly and is the only moving part. It forms a sealed chamber separating the operating pressure from the line pressure.

PREssuRE REDuCING CONTROL VALVE

DescriptionAutomatically reduces a higher inlet pressure to a lower outlet pressure regardless of changes in the flow rate or inlet pressure. Accurate pilot operated control valve capable of a precise and easy adjustment of the outlet pressure.

OperationPressure reducing pilot senses the outlet pressure through the connection on the valve outlet port. Under flowing conditions the pressure reducing pilot reacts to small changes on the outlet pressure, controlling the valve position by modulating the pressure in control chamber. When outlet pressure exceeds the pressure setting of the pilot, the pilot will then modulate to ensure pressure control.

PREssuRE susTAINING CONTROL VALVE

DescriptionAutomatically maintains a minimum preset inlet pressure regardless of changes in flow rate. Accurate pilot operated control valve for pressure sustaining, back pressure or unloading functions in a by-pass system application.

OperationThe main valve remains closed until the inlet pressure exceeds the pilot setting under flowing conditions. The pressure sustaining pilot reacts to small changes in the inlet pressure controlling the valve position. Should the inlet pressure fall below the set point the main valve will close or modulate to ensure a minimum inlet pressure.

LEVEL CONTROL VALVE

DescriptionAutomatically controls the high water level in reservoirs. It is an accurate, pilot/float operated control valve for level control applications. In addition an electric signal closes or opens main valve or the valve closes drip tight at the maximum high level.

OperationThe float pilot is remotely installed at a high level inside of the reservoir. The valve closes tight at the maximum level and modulates to maintain the tank level and keeps the level nearly constant. Flow into the tank is in direct proportion to the flow out of the reservoir.

Pressure - The S859 Pressure Reducing Valve offers accurate downstream pressure control regardless of upstream instability and changes of low. With advanced design the pilot control block distributes pressure changes evenly allowing continued stable pressure.

Accurate pilot operation is achievable with easy adjustment offering precise control of the downstream pressure.

PREssuRE RELIEF CONTROL VALVE

DescriptionAutomatically opens to relieve over pressure. Accurate, pilot operated control valve for quick opening relief applications.

OperationPilot on pressure relief control valve senses the inlet pressure through a connection on the pilot. The main valve remains closed until the inlet pressure exceeds the pilot setting. The valve opens fast to maintain steady line pressure inlet but closing gradually to prevent surges.

bOOsTER PuMP CONTROL VALVE

DescriptionThis model is installed inline on the outlet of the pump discharge. Accurate pilot operated control valve to prevent pump from starting and stopping surges.

OperationValve is normally closed. On pump start-up two solenoid pilots are energized. The three-way pilot discharges the water from control chamber governed by the opening speed control valve for slowly open. The second solenoid pilot closes to stop outlet pressure on control chamber. When shutdown is called for, the three-way pilot is de-energized to slowly close main valve. In power failure system closes main valve.

RATE OF FLOw CONTROL VALVE

DescriptionAutomatically prevents excessive flow demands by limiting flow to a maximum rate regardless of line pressure changes. Accurate pilot operated control valve for rate of flow applications.

OperationRate of flow pilot senses the pressure differential across the orifice plate located in the outlet of main valve. When the pressure drop across the orifice plate exceeds the set point the main valve closes slightly, limiting the flow. Accurate control is achieved as small changes in the differential pressure across the orifice plate occur.

PREssuRE REDuCING - PREssuRE susTAINING CONTROL VALVE DescriptionAutomatically reduces a higher inlet pressure to a lower outlet pressure regardless of changes in flow rate or inlet pressure. This model is capable of adjusting the outlet pressure and ensuring a minimum inlet pressure.

OperationThe pilot on the pressure reducing senses the outlet pressure through the connection at the valve outlet port. Under flowing conditions the pressure reducing pilot reacts to small changes in the outlet pressure controlling the valve position by modulating the pressure in control chamber. When outlet pressure exceeds the pressure setting of pilot, the pilot will modulate to ensure pressure control. The inlet pressure has priority, in high demand the inlet pressure falls to the pressure sustaining module setting, valve will modulate to ensure a minimum inlet pressure.

Rate of Flow – The S859 rate of flow control provides constant flows regardless of pressure changes within the network. The pilot measures pressure differentials across the downstream orifice plate and adjusts the flow accordingly.

Accurate pilot operation is achievable with easy adjustment offering accurate flow control.

VALVE PERFORMANCE sEAT AND REGuLATING PLuG DEsIGN

The parabolic design of regulating plug ensures at low flows a smooth, precise and accurate regulation, reducing noise and vibration. In standard valves a lift of 10% represents a Kv value of 20%. With the new design a lift of 20% represents a Kv value of 10%.

DIAPHRAGM CLOsING ANGLE

The plug design associated to the angle of diaphragm when valve is closing, ensuring seat chatter will not occur, causing no “stress” on diaphragm (tension). This means that the valve is designed for controlling precisely any flow rate from zero demand up to the maximum flow, without decreasing the valve performance.

CAVITATION

Locate inlet and outlet pressure on cavitation chart.If point location falls in shaded area C or B, cavitation can occur. Continued use of standard valve in shaded area can cause deterioration in valve body and produce more noise and vibration.

ANTI CAVITATION TRIM

To reduce the risk of cavitation the valve incorporates a double sliding cage design of AISI 316 construction. The seat slots are oriented around the plug cage. When the valve opens flow converges in the centre of first chamber of the seat cage allowing the potential cavitation to dissipate. The upper slots of internal sliding cage will divide the upstream flow before the regulating plug. The second chamber will dissipate energy before bubbles come in contact with internal surfaces of the main valve body and implode thus preventing cavitation erosion. The seat and regulating plug design will guide the velocity vortices and steam bubbles to collapse out of body and avoids damage.

THE NEw INTERACTIVE PRODuCT sPECIFICATION TOOL FROM GLENFIELD The new user friendly Glenfield interactive product specification tool allows the customer to easily view, select and size valves to suit their requirements. By simply identifying a valve using the applications map, you can find all the technical information you need to ensure you have made the correct choice of valve. Once selected there is a valve sizing program to assist you to confidently select the correct size valve by entering a small amount of application information.

TELEMETRy CONTROL AND AssET TRACKINGThe Series 859 range of control valves are fully compatible and can be fully integrated with telemetry and control systems such as “Technolog Regulo” and “Halma Pegasus” through dedicated adaptors; specific details of this can be supplied on request.
