DIAMOND AND CBN GRINDING WHEELS

The selection of the suitable diamond type is made from a very wide range of synthetic and natural, metal-coated, vapor-coated or uncoated, regularly or irregularly shaped grains.

The main components are phenolic resins. Resin bonds fl ow at approx. 180-200°C. In other words, they polymerize from powder to liquid. In contrast to the ceramic bond, synthetic resin bonds are much more susceptible to solutions, oils, polluted water and temperature infl uences.

They are more elastic than ceramic bonds, yet very tough and strong, and also have good thermal conductivity, which means that frictional heat can be removed more quickly from the cutting zone, which means that the grinding behavior is cooler, especially for dry grinding tasks.

CUBIC - CRYSTALLINE BORON NITRIDE (CBN)

It is manufactured synthetically, is resistant to high temperatures and is mainly used to machine the following materials:

tempered steels, cast iron, spring steels, case hardening steels, high alloy steels, hot and cold work steels, high speed steels, ball bearing steels and stellites. Similar to diamond, CBN can also choose from a wide range of types with different properties.

The main components are various sintered bronzes. Steel and carbide bindings are rarely used due to their very low self-sharpening effect. Due to the possibility of alloying with a wide variety of metal fillers, this bond in the high-speed range at cutting speed > 100 m/s can lead to high cutting performance and tool life.

This bond group also enjoys a high level of value in the profile grinding area due to the eroding conditioning (simultaneous profiling and sharpening) that is possible today.

The sintering temperature, adjusted to the respective binding properties, fluctuate between 700-800°C. Sintered metal bonds are harder than synthetic resin bonds, are more wear-resistant and very good heat conductor. They are mainly used for grinding processes in the production of hard metal, HSS E, ceramics and glass.

The grinding wheels are manufactured on modern machines with the latest CNC profiling technology. The process and the organization of the production guarantee our customers the highest quality standards when using the grinding wheels with the same structural properties and the closest hardness tolerances.

Outstanding tool life, profiles that also remain profiles, easy to dress and profile, cool grinding and strong machining. Services that are rightly required, particularly in the automotive and rolling bearing industry, in tool making and in the manufacture of cutting tools. In contrast to the synthetic resin and metal bonds, the diamond or CBN bodies protrude relatively far from the abrasive coating. They give the electroplated tools a high degree of grinding friendliness and high cutting performance.

When machining wear-resistant and short-chipping materials, the constant grinding performance is not guaranteed due to the lack of a self-sharpening effect with single-layer grinding surfaces.

Since galvanic bonds allow peripheral speeds > 200 m/s, they can also be used very well in high-speed production. Galvanic abrasive coatings are used on non-dressable profile carriers and have a very good profile consistency.

BONDS

Negative profile dressing rolls have been used in series production for many years. They guarantee high dimensional and form accuracy of the ground workpieces. They are available in 2 bond variants with different characteristics. On the one hand the hand-set infiltrated version and on the other hand the galvanically statistically manufactured version.

Common to both roller types is that the workpiece end profile, which also represents the dressing roller profile, must be “mapped” in a ring-shaped negative master form. The selected diamond grit is deposited in the profile of the negative master form ring in different manufacturing processes and then sintered or electroplated to the base body of the later profile dressing roll.

APPLICATION AREA GALVANIC NEGATIVE PROCEDURES

In addition to the grinding of carbide, electroplated diamond tools are also ideally suited for the machining of

Green (presintered) hard metals, Thermosets, GFK-Materials, Gaphite, Electric carbon, Ferrites, Ceramic materials, Hollow glass and Laboratory glass

CBN tools with galvanic bonding are preferred for grinding bores on internal and jig grinding machines. The tools are used for hardened steels above 58 HRC, but especially for high-alloy tool and high-speed steels.

There are several methods for this: Dressing with brake-controlled dressing devices, with workpieces made of soft steel or with electroplated diamond pulling strips. After using the dressing methods described last, the diamond or CBN wheel must be sharpened, i.e. the bond must be reset to expose the abrasive grain. It is best to do this with the whetstone provided. The discs are optimally sharpened if you get caught on the abrasive grains with your fi ngernail.

The depth infeed is dependent on the diamond/CBN grain size. The fi ner the grit selected, the more it decreases. The following infeed depths are recommended:

Special shapes and profi le tools can be produced at short notice in this binding. The steel bodies required for this are manufactured by us according to the drawing or by the customer. Used (processed) diamond and CBN tools can be provided with a new galvanic abrasive coating.

In order to obtain the best possible surface quality, it is suffi cient to reduce these infeed depths or - even better - to run the disc several passes without infeed, so to speak to “burn out” the material. A too large infeed reduces the service life of the wheel. Large contact areas during grinding require a lower infeed than the above-mentioned average fi gures. Metal bonded diamond / CBN wheels must be run with less infeed than plastic bonded wheels (higher grinding pressure - the bond is harder).

Dressing of cup wheels: Loose silicon carbide grit size 80-120 mesh is spread on a steel plate and the diamond or CBN wheel is moved over it under light pressure. This resets the bond and exposes the abrasive grit.

The grain size used largely determines the grinding performance and the surface quality achieved. With constant carat content, the number of grain tips on the surface of the base increases with fi ner grain, subjectively the disc becomes denser, harder and less abrasive. In order to create chip spaces on the abrasive coating, it is therefore necessary to adjust the concentration to the grain size in order to prevent the grain from being packed too tightly.

DEFINITIONS

Before use, please ensure that the machine is in perfect condition. It must not show any vibration. The shaft and the disc flanges must be checked carefully so that the disc runs straight without any vertical or lateral runout. When using the disc, please ensure that the coolant supply is sufficient.

Check the peripheral speed at which your disc operates.The normal average working speed is 25 m/sec. It is better to graduate in:

15 - 20 m/sec. For metal bonds 25 - 30 m/sec. For plastic bonds

Convert the existing PCD triangular system to the BCT dressers in your production within minutes. Compatible external dimensions mean that only the plates need to be replaced. The holder systems available in the machine can continue to be used. The dressing parameters are retained as a basis.

We offer all radii in the range of 0.050 - 0.500mm.

Dressing plates are excellently suited for “straight dressing”, but can also be used for profiling and copying, as they are only set with diamond rows in one plane. In addition, in most cases they replace expensive, ground profile diamonds which are used for profiling the various grinding wheels.

In addition, by varying the dressing side-feed, they ensure that the effective roughness depth of the grinding wheel surface is adapted to the machining process. The dressing plates contain natural diamond tips of selected quality. They vary in size and gap distance depending on the grinding wheel grain and are set by hand in several layers.

The most modern production technology of dressing tools meets the most modern abrasives. For decades, there have been established manufacturing methods which have essentially hardly changed.

This was the reason for us to implement our ideas, taking into account the current technical possibilities and requirements for dressing tools, also with a focus on the increasingly important environmental protection. There are two basic types of dressing rolls, one is the form roll and the other is the profile roll.

Milled profile dressers have a precisely profile checked radius and high diamond quality that meets the increased requirements. Our precise production works with the most modern machines and is additionally monitored by the latest optical devices.

We guarantee consistent quality for new production and repair of profile dressing diamonds. We design individual dressing diamonds even for the most complicated grinding profiles. Profile dressing diamonds can be used for all grinding wheels (e.g. corundum, precious corundum, silicon carbide grit).

Multi-grain dressers have the advantage over single grain dressing diamonds that they wear much more slowly and can be used until they are completely worn out. They are sintered together from grained diamond and metal powder of highly wear-resistant bronze or hard material to form a cylindrical aggregate. The sintered metal cartridge is then soldered into the corresponding holder. With this type of tool, the dressing work is carried out by several small diamonds, which together provide excellent performance. Multi-grain dressers achieve fl at surfaces and sharp edges. To achieve good results, the diamond grit should be at least twice the size of the grinding wheel grit to be dressed. Tools with a higher diamond content work more economically.

The single-grain diamond dresser is the most well-known diamond insert in the industry. Material surface quality and material dimensional accuracy depend on the quality of the dressing diamonds.

A prerequisite for the optimum dressing of a grinding wheel with the aid of diamonds is the coordination of the diamond weight and the size, width and hardness of the grinding wheel.

The dressing tool fulfills two main functions: It removes abrasive grains and metal particles that have become dull and restores the correct geometric grinding wheel shapes.

The actual diamond content in multi-stone diamond dressers is usually higher than in single-grain diamond dressers, but the price is much lower, as smaller diamonds are used predominantly.

The diamonds can be arranged in many different variations depending on the application. They are set by hand in one or more layers. Since a larger diamond surface on the grinding wheel is engaged in the multi-stone dresser, the work load is optimally distributed and thus a greater feed rate is possible.

bdm lapping pastes are oil and alcohol-soluble; these are self-lubricating. Make sure that initially the grinding process is carried out in dry condition, however a dilution can be added if the surface to be ground becomes to dry. Any type of dilution agent can be used. With a commercially available fine oil the same results will be achieved. By adding the dilution agent a secure anchorage of the diamond grains on the lapping tool is guaranteed.

DIAMOND LAPPING PASTES

Diamond pastes are to be stored in a cool place; this is especially important in summer.

Due to our experience we can recommend the following grain combinations: 50 µm, 30 µm, 15 µm, 9 µm, 3 µm or 50 µm, 30 µm, 15 µm, 6 µm, 1 µm. Already with a 3 µm grain excellent surfaces are achieved. In most cases a mirror polish with 3 µm is sufficient.
