DFMA ON DESKTOP STAPLER
Presentation byRanjith K
2
Introduction Stapler is a mechanical device that joins sheets of paper
by driving a thin metal staple through the sheets and folding the ends.
Staplers are produced for use in: Manufacture of furniture; Carpet tacking; Medical field; Picture frame manufacture; Electrical wire & insulation installation ; Home or Office.
Even with the potential of dozens of uses, they are most frequently used in binding multipage documents & other such related office tasks.
3
There are virtually as many types of staplers as there are uses for them.

Functional Description of a Stapler
The four main sub-functions in a stapler are:
Holding the staples securely in a slot
Loading & unloading of the staples
Plunging a rigid member on to a staple
Stapling(i.e., piercing a staple through a stack of
papers and folding back of its sides)

Anvil: provides a guiding mechanism for the staple ends.
Coil spring: helps in pushing the staples forward, maintaining adequate forward force on the staples.
Leaf spring: provides the springing action between the upper arm and the staple guide
Staple guide: holds the staples. Staple slide: helps in the feeding of the staples. Pin:provides the necessary hinging action between
the upper and the lower assemblies as well as keeps the stapler together.

Material SelectionThe most recent staplers are being made
almost entirely of plastic. However, In a metal stapler most of the
components are made of steel and some parts are made of plastic.

The Manufacturing Process
Forming the springsCoil spring: Coil springs such as the follow spring are
wound around rods and heat treated.Leaf spring: bending or rolling (slightly curling) a thin
piece of steel and then carefully heating it to a temperature that will cause internal stresses.
Stamping of partsFlat sheet metal material of varying thicknesses that are
sandwiched between a punch and die. When the punch pushes on the material, it "shears" a
piece of material (the shape of the punch) out of the sheet.
11
Most of the major metal components besides springs and rivets, such as the base, metal head, and anvil, are made in this way.
After a part is stamped, it is usually then formed into a shape.
Most stapler parts have somewhat square corners, so typically the material is bent at 90 degree angles.
Pin is little more than a piece of bar stock, cut off to a certain length either with a saw or on a machining center.
Plastic parts of staplers are made by injection molding, in which a liquified plastic is injected into a die.

Assembly
The pins, stampings, and springs are sub-assembled in stages and then assembled together with the upper and lower halves of the stapler frame.
The top and bottom half sub-assemblies are assembled in separate assembly jigs.
The top and bottom halves come together in another jig, and the pin that connects the two is riveted into place. Finally, the plastic grips are assembled to get the final product.

The Future
Staplers, like most other mechanisms, are continually adjusted and improved upon.
As new materials and processes are developed, many uses become incorporated into all kinds of products, the stapler is no exception.
Likewise the use for staplers will continue to increase as one of the latest uses is in the medical field as a substitute for stitches.
